A second later, Kristen’s location popped up on Clive’s phone.
He slid it into his pocket, his face unreadable. “Amelia, there’s an emergency with one of my overseas projects. It’s serious. I need to run to the office right now.”
“Go ahead,” Amelia replied, her tone gentle, even though her chest felt tight. “Drive safe, okay?”
Clive nodded, leaning down to press a quick kiss to her forehead, looking apologetic. “I’ll probably have to spend the night at the office.”
Amelia dug her nails into her palm, holding herself together, swallowing the urge to shove him away.
“It’s fine. Work comes first. It’s just one more night, right?”
She almost laughed at herself—how was she still able to smile at him so sweetly?
Clive changed clothes in a hurry and was out the door in less than a minute.
Amelia wandered to the window, staring blankly as Clive’s car tore off into the night, swallowed up by the darkness before she could even blink.
He really couldn’t get away fast enough.
She blinked, coming back to herself, and realized she’d wrinkled the curtain fabric in her fist. Letting go, she felt nothing but a deep, bitter emptiness.
All it took was a message and a photo from Kristen, and Clive would drop everything—leave his wife and kids in the middle of the night—to rush to her at the hospital.
She thought about Kristen’s secret Twitter, filled with posts and pictures from her and Clive’s college days together.
Every single post felt like a slap to Amelia’s face.
She was twenty-seven now. She’d loved Clive for nearly half her life, but the love she’d begged for was something Kristen got without even trying.
Amelia wiped away tears she hadn’t realized were there. Forcing herself to pull it together, she padded quietly down the hall to her kids’ room.
Timmy and Penny were already asleep, the soft nightlight filling the room with a gentle glow.
Amelia walked to Timmy’s bed, her heart full. He slept so soundly, his hands neatly folded on his stomach, his little face already hinting at how handsome he’d become.
