Karma Doesn’t Sleep: The Revenge Queen Rises novel Chapter 68

At the hospital, Kristen was still on the phone when Clive walked in. She handed the phone to him.

“It’s Dr. Reed,” she said.

“Adrian?” Clive looked surprised. Timmy trailed in behind him, pausing just briefly before settling quietly onto the little sofa in the corner. Without so much as a glance up, he pulled out his tablet and started scrolling through international news.

Clive took the phone. “Dr. Reed, what’s up?”

Timmy shot a quick look at his dad out of the corner of his eye.

On the other end, Adrian heard Clive’s tone and realized right away that Timmy hadn’t mentioned Amelia’s fall at home. He hesitated, thinking it over, but decided not to throw Timmy under the bus.

“Mr. Salmeron,” Adrian said carefully, “I was passing by your place and thought I’d check in. Turns out Mrs. Salmeron had a little accident and got hurt. I patched her up and thought I should let you know.”

Clive’s brow furrowed. “Amelia got hurt? Is it serious?”

“Nothing too bad, don’t worry.”

Clive let out a quiet breath. “Alright, thanks. I’ll settle this as a house call.”

Kristen waited until Clive hung up, then asked anxiously, “Amelia got hurt? What happened? Clive, maybe you should call home and check on her?”

Since they were off the clock, Kristen dropped the formalities with him.

Meanwhile, Penny sat curled up in Kristen’s lap, lips pressed tight with worry as she played with her doll, twisting its hair into a tangled mess.

Her round, dark eyes flickered with anxiety.

Is that mean woman going to tell on me to Dad?

If she tells him Amelia got hurt because Penny wouldn’t eat breakfast and ran outside, and Amelia had to chase after her—would Dad get mad at her?

Penny shrank into herself and looked helplessly at her brother across the room.

But Timmy didn’t notice her at all this time, his attention split between the news on his tablet and their dad.

Clive glanced at his kids as he dialed the house, then stepped into the hallway.

He waited by the window at the end of the corridor, listening to the phone ring—once, twice, nearly a full minute—before Amelia finally picked up.

“Hello…”

Clive’s voice was gentle, worried. “Amelia, Dr. Reed told me you got hurt. What happened? Does it hurt?”

Amelia stared at the bandage around her ankle, listening to Clive’s anxious voice in her ear. He sounded genuinely worried, almost frantic.

She found herself wondering: if she said she was in pain, would he come rushing home? Or would he, just like last night, leave her behind and run to Kristen instead?
