After that, it felt like every time Timmy or Penny caught a cold—or whenever Clive wasn’t feeling well—Adrian would show up for a house call and, without fail, spot Kristen there.
Clive had introduced her once, calling her “Ms. Watts, my secretary.”
But, honestly, what kind of secretary leaves the boss’s house wearing silk pajamas?
Still, Clive was technically Adrian’s boss too, so he kept his mouth shut about the whole situation. Eventually, he just got used to Kristen being the unofficial lady of the house.
What Adrian never saw coming was Amelia waking up after five years.
He was so shocked he just stood there, frozen, for several seconds before reality snapped back into place. He quickly reached out to take Amelia’s hand—and that’s when he realized just how thin she’d gotten.
Her arm, poking out from the sleeve of her pajamas, looked heartbreakingly fragile—almost all bone beneath the skin.
“I’m sorry, Mrs. Salmeron,” Adrian apologized, stumbling over his words. “I didn’t mean… that is, I wasn’t implying…”
Amelia didn’t seem bothered at all.
Clive was the one who’d cheated; why make life harder for someone who just did his job?
“It’s okay, I understand,” she said, her voice calm and steady. “While I was unconscious, Ms. Watts helped Clive with the kids. She was around a lot, so it’s normal you’d get the wrong idea.”
Adrian was at a loss for words.
Mrs. Salmeron really was the definition of sweet and naïve.
If only she knew—Kristen wasn’t just helping with the kids. But Adrian wasn’t about to say anything. For one, he wanted to keep his job. And besides, it wasn’t like he’d ever actually caught Kristen and Clive together, even if he did see her coming out of Clive’s bedroom in pajamas.
Better to mind his own business.
So he switched to what he knew best.
