When Clive proposed, he slid a six-carat sapphire ring onto her finger, saying it was a family heirloom from his mother, now passed down to her.
Amelia had cried tears of joy—not because the ring was expensive, but because she genuinely believed Mrs. Salmeron had finally accepted her as family.
She never expected that, after the wedding and once the guests had all gone home, Mrs. Salmeron would pull her aside and ask for the ring back.
“Amelia, this ring is way too valuable for you to wear. Let me keep it safe for you, alright? Here, try this one instead. It’s lovely, suits you even better, and I picked it out just for you,” Mrs. Salmeron had said, handing her the ring Amelia still wore now.
But then, one sleepless night, Amelia went downstairs for some air and accidentally overheard Mrs. Salmeron and Caroline chatting in the garden gazebo.
Caroline was beaming, snapping selfies with the huge sapphire ring on her finger.
“Mom, you’re the best! This ring is gorgeous. It’s finally mine, and I’m never taking it off!”
“Don’t let your sister-in-law see,” Mrs. Salmeron warned.
Caroline rolled her eyes. “So what if she does? As if someone like her deserves a ring like this! You just let her wear it for the wedding, for show. Oh, and Mom, did you give her that freebie ring from the jeweler?”
“I did. Told her I picked it out just for her. So don’t let it slip,” Mrs. Salmeron replied.
Caroline kept admiring the sapphire, smirking, “Honestly, Amelia’s only fit for knockoff stuff like that. Marrying my brother is the best luck her family’s ever had.”
…
Shaking off the memory, Amelia took off the ring and tossed it straight into the trash.
Ahead of her stood the shining gold sign of Baybridge University—her old school.
She tilted her head back, staring at it, her heart full of mixed emotions.
Seven years. . .
