Chapter 156
Chapter 156
Raven’s POV
How dare that bastard threaten me?
I muttered to myself, clutching the letter so tightly that the paper crumpled in my fist. My chest rose and fell with every uneven breath as f stared at the words again, my eyes burning with anger and disbelief.
The person I’ve been calling father my whole life sent this?
“If you don’t release Olivia, I will make sure you pay with your life.”
The words echoed in my head like a poisonous chant. Each time I read them, my heart pounded harder, a bitter taste of betrayal settling on my tongue.
Calm down, Raven.
My wolf’s voice was soft, almost pleading, but how could I calm down? My entire world was crumbling piece by piece, and now this?
It was already past 11 p.m., and I couldn’t get a wink of sleep. I’d been tossing and turning for hours, hugging the pillow like it could absorb the storm raging inside me. It couldn’t. Nothing could.
With a frustrated sigh, I threw the blanket aside and swung my legs off the bed. The cold floor sent a shiver up my spine, but it did little to numb the chaos in my mind. I picked up the letter from the nightstand and stared at it one last time before tucking it in my hand.
I needed air. I needed to think.
The room suddenly felt like a cage, suffocating me with memories I wanted to forget. Before I could change my mind, I slipped out of my nightgown and threw on a simple black hoodie and loose joggers. My hair was a tangled mess, but I didn’t care. I shoved my feet into sneakers, quietly opened the door, and stepped into the hallway.
The pack house was silent–eerily so. Only the distant hum of the generator and the occasional hoot of an owl outside broke the stillness. I kept my steps light, careful not to wake anyone. The last thing I needed was curious eyes questioning why I was sneaking around at this hour.
When I reached the back door, I hesitated for a second, listening. Nothing. With a deep breath, I pushed it open and slipped outside.
The cool night breeze hit me like a balm, brushing against my heated skin. I inhaled sharply, the scent of pine and earth grounding me for a fleeting moment. The moon hung high above, glowing like a silver guardian against the dark sky. It should have been comforting, but tonight even the moon felt distant.
Clutching the letter, I made my way to the garden. It had always been my refuge, the only place where I could hear my thoughts without
interruption. The stone path glistened faintly under the moonlight, leading me to the familiar bench tucked between rose bushes.
I sat down heavily, the bench creaking under my weight. My fingers trembled as I unfolded the letter again, reading the hateful words for
what felt like the hundredth time.
“If you don’t release Olivia, I will make sure you pay with your life.”
Why, Father? Why would you do this do.he really think I wanted Olivia gone?
Tears stung my eyes, but I blinked them back fiercely. I refused to cry. Crying would make me weak, and I had been weak for too long.
As I stared blankly at the letter, a sudden sound made my wolf perk up. Footsteps. Slow, deliberate, crunching against the gravel path.

My heart stopped.
I turned sharply toward the entrance of the garden, my body tensing for a fight or flight. For a split second, I thought it was Ethan, his possessive aura, his cold eyes burning holes through me, but when the figure stepped into the dim light, relief washed over me
Beta Matthew.
He was wearing loose grey sweatpants that hung low on his hips, his bare chest glistening faintly under the moonlight as if he had just finished training. My throat went dry. I hated myself for noticing the sculpted muscles, the way his body moved with lethal grace.
When his eyes landed on me, surprise flickered across his face, quickly replaced by something softer. Concern.
“Why are you out this late?” he asked, his voice calm yet laced with curiosity as he approached.
I froze, my words tangled on my tongue. I didn’t want to get him involved in this mess not anymore. He had done enough for me, and I had already brought enough chaos into his life.
“I-“I started, but the sentence died halfway.
Matthew’s gaze shifted to the bench, and before I could react, his hand shot out and snatched the letter lying beside me.
“Wait–Matthew, don’t-”
But it was too late. His eyes darted across the paper, his jaw tightening with every word he read. By the time he finished, his entire expression had darkened, a storm brewing behind his calm façade.
“This… this is dangerous,” he muttered, his voice dropping low as he sank onto the bench beside me.
“I know,” I whispered, my voice barely audible. “And Ethan thinks… he thinks this was a love letter from some secret lover of mine.”
My throat tightened painfully. “He didn’t even give me a chance to explain. Didn’t let me tell him the truth.”
Matthew didn’t respond immediately. He just sat there, staring at me with those deep eyes that seemed to read every broken piece of me.
The silence stretched, heavy and suffocating.
Finally, he spoke. “So… what will you do now?”
I laughed bitterly, the sound hollow. “I don’t honestly know. Maybe I’ll think of something tomorrow. But one thing is clear–I’m not going to
let him win.”
Matthew’s gaze softened. Unexpected, he wrapped his arms around me in a firm, reassuring hug. For a moment, I froze, my body stiff against his warmth. But then, slowly, I let myself melt into him. Just for a second. Just to feel safe.
“Soon,” he murmured into my hair, his voice gentle yet filled with conviction, “all this will end. And you’ll have that fairy tale life you’ve been dreaming of.”
A shaky laugh escaped me. “Fairy tale life, huh?”
“Yes,” he said, pulling back just enough to look into my eyes. His lips curved into a small smile. “And when that happens, I can’t wait to be the
godfather.”
I blinked at him, startled. A godfather? My mind scrambled for words, but all that came out was a smile. The thought of bearing pups, my pups, was something I had buried deep within me. Yet here he was, speaking it into existence like it was inevitable.
We talked after that, About everything and nothing. About the silly dreams I once had, about the stupid mistakes we’d both made, about a life that seemed too far out of reach. The maid eventually brought us some juice, and for a while, the sweet liquid dulled the bitterness in my

chest.
But then it happened. A feeling. Subtle at first, like an itch under my skin. My wolf stirred restlessly, pacing inside me like a caged beast. Something was wrong.
