Reven’s Pov

For a moment, I didn’t move. The warmth pressed against my back was steady, comforting, and protective in a way I had not felt in what seemed like forever.

Slowly, I opened my eyes, turning my face just enough to see Derick.

His hand was splayed across my stomach, fingers relaxed but firm, as if even in sleep he was afraid that if he let go, I would disappear.

My heart clenched. He looked so peaceful lying there, lashes dark against his skin, lips parted slightly as his breath brushed against my hair. He didn’t look like a man haunted by responsibilities or battles.

I found myself studying him in silence. My eyes trailed over the curve of his cheekbones, the way his jawline looked sharp even in rest, and the faint crease on his brow that refused to ease completely.

“You’re staring,” my wolf murmured with a sly chuckle.

“I’m not,” I whispered in my head, cheeks warming even though he was still asleep.

“You think he’s perfect. Admit it.”

I sighed softly, my chest tightening. “He is just… different. Nothing like Alpha Ethan.”

At the mere mention of Ethan’s name, the memory of my nightmare from the night before surged back into my mind.

I had seen Ethan’s eyes, cold and burning with cruel intent. I had felt his hands around me, his words slicing. into my heart.

Even in dreams, he hurt me. So much so that I had woken up trembling, my skin damp with sweat, clutching at the sheets like they were the only thing keeping me safe.

“He hurt me,” I whispered, my voice barely audible in the quiet of the room. “He hurt me so much that now I carry him into my sleep. Even in the safety of another man’s arms, he still lingers.”

My wolf’s tone shifted, gentler now. “But you are here. And he is not. You are with Derick, not Ethan.”

I swallowed hard, fighting the lump rising in my throat. My gaze fell to Derick’s hand still resting on my stomach.

My children were growing inside me–innocent souls who deserved love, safety, and peace. My heart ached as a thought slipped past my lips.

“I pray my kids don’t look like him.” I said quietly, almost to myself. “I pray they don’t carry his face. I want them to have Derick’s features, his eyes, and his smile. Something pure… something good.”

My wolf gave a soft but firm reply. “They can’t, Raven. Derick is not their father,

No matter how much you want them to have his features, blood cannot be denied.”

Tears burned at the corners of my eyes. I knew she was right.

No amount of wishing could change the truth of their bloodline. But my heart rebelled, clinging desperately to the dream of them being born free of Ethan’s shadow.

I reached out, unable to resist. My fingers brushed against Derick’s face, tracing the edge of his jaw with a featherlight touch. His skin was warm, grounding me in the moment. I wanted to hold on to him, to etch this peace into my soul so that maybe, just maybe, it could drive away the nightmares.

But before I could lose myself in the softness of the moment, his hand shot up, catching mine mid–stroke. His eyes fluttered open slowly, revealing that sharp, penetrating gaze that always seemed to see more than I wanted him to.

“You were admiring my face, weren’t you?” he asked, his voice low and tinged with amusement.

Heat rushed to my cheeks, and I quickly pulled back. “No,” I lied, shaking my head a little too quickly. “You shouldn’t think so highly of yourself.”

A knowing smile tugged at his lips.

He leaned forward, brushing his lips gently against mine in a kiss so tender it made my heart ache. “Too late for that,” he murmured against my skin.

Before I could respond, he pulled back slightly, his eyes soft yet firm. “Go get dressed. We’re running late for the ultrasound appointment.”

For a second, my brain stalled. “Ultrasound?” Then realization hit me. “Oh goddess, I completely forgot!”

I scrambled out of bed, grabbing the dress I had set aside. Derick chuckled behind me, his laughter warm and deep, filling the room with something I hadn’t heard enough in my life genuine joy.

I hurried into the bathroom, splashing cool water on my face before dressing carefully. My wolf hummed in the back of my mind. “You’re glowing,” she teased.

When I finally came out, Derick was already dressed, waiting patiently.

He glanced up, his eyes lingering on me in a way that made me feel… seen. Not just as a vessel carrying children, not as someone broken by a cruel Alpha, but as a woman who was still worthy of being cherished.
