Mending a Broken Love (Roxanne and Sebastian) novel Chapter 147

Thick smoke came billowing toward Roxanne, choking her so badly that she couldn't breathe. Someone had poured gasoline downstairs, and the flames were spreading fast. She tried to escape, but the door upstairs had been sealed shut. There was no way out.

Panic set in. The suffocating smoke filled her lungs, making her dizzy and weak. She coughed violently, desperately trying to cling to any sliver of hope. She staggered to the window, using every last bit of her strength to bang on the glass and scream for help.

She had already used up her jinxing skill for the day. Otherwise, she could've just made the door explode.

Covering her nose with one hand, she waved a rechargeable desk lamp in the other to send a signal through the window, calling for help.

But the fire was spreading too fast. The house was made of wood, and once soaked in gasoline, it burned like crazy.

The flames were completely out of control. Smoke poured through the air, and the heat closed in from all sides. She was suffocating, her strength fading.

She collapsed on the floor while hacking from the smoke. The scorching heat pressed down on her from all around.

"Roxanne!" In the haze of near-unconsciousness, she thought she heard someone screaming her name.

What scared her the most was that it sounded like Sebastian.

She let out a bitter laugh. At a time like this, she was actually hallucinating his voice. Just before everything went black, she thought she heard glass shattering.

A beam overhead was weakened by the flames and broke loose before it came crashing down right toward her face.

She shut her eyes, too weak to move. So, this was it... Death.

In her final moments of consciousness, she thought she heard someone grunt in pain. Then, drops of something wet landed on her face, and a few hit her lips. Saltiness laced her tongue.

Then, everything went dark.

When she opened her eyes again, the first thing she noticed was the strong smell of disinfectant. Memories of burning heat rushed back, and she jolted fully awake.

Looking around, she realized she was in a luxurious room. The ceiling was white, and the furniture was all white too. An IV was hooked up to her arm.

Elvis walked over to Sebastian's side and injected something into his arm.

"When that beam fell, Sebastian shielded you with his own body. A huge part of his back got burned. And then he carried you out of the fire. You're fine because he took the hit for you."

Roxanne was at a loss for words.

Sebastian's shirt was off, and his back was completely bandaged with thick wrapping.

Elvis gave her a friendly, curious smile. "What's your relationship with Sebastian? He risked his life for you. From what I know, he came to Hyvaland looking for someone. Was it you?"

Roxanne remained quiet.

Under Elvis' intense, probing gaze, she didn't know how to respond. She didn't have answers to any of those questions. But one thing was for sure, she couldn't deny the fact that Sebastian had saved her.

And that was what confused her the most. Every time she and Liana were in the picture, he would pick Liana without hesitation whenever he had to choose. But as long as Liana wasn't around, he'd jump off a cliff for her.
