Sebastian felt suffocated looking at the determination and indifference in Roxanne's eyes. A flash of despair passed through his dark eyes. His large hand tightened further, a sense of helplessness and an indescribable pain wrapping around him.
He had considered letting go before, but he just couldn't do it. "Rox, I'll prove it to you."
Roxanne knew she couldn't communicate with Sebastian. "How will you prove it? When it involves Liana again, will you choose me?"
His fingertips turned white. "I will." His answer came without hesitation.
She smiled. "I don't believe you."
His voice grew firmer. "I really will!"
Roxanne kept the smile on her face. "When I left, I gave you three days to choose me unconditionally. You said yes without hesitation. But what happened then? I'm glad I never believed you from the start."
He closed his eyes, suppressing the bitter feeling in his chest. His voice became hoarse, trembling slightly. "You never gave me the chance. Your plane ticket and your plan to study abroad were already booked. No matter whether I chose you or not, you would've left."
At this point, he was still trying to shift the blame on her.
She smiled. It was the truth, but she refused to accept it. She said as though to herself, "If you had chosen me that day, I wouldn't have left."
That one sentence struck Sebastian like a fatal blow. His fists clenched tighter and tighter, then loosened again. There was no way to argue.
Roxanne was telling him that she had left because he hadn't chosen her and that she would have stayed with him if he had chosen her. The first part was a fact that had already happened. The second part was a possibility.
The first part was certain. The second part...
A huge suffocating feeling and helplessness flooded over him. He had never faced such a great test in his life. After a long while, he finally bent his noble back. "It's my fault."
His tall figure seemed desolate. The proud man that he was now seemed as lost as a child. If it were in the past, Roxanne would have certainly gone over to hug him. But now, she could leave him without a second thought.
A woman shouldn't pity a man or she'd end up with misfortune.
Roxanne had already gone through that in the past seven years.
Watching her go upstairs again, Sebastian sat down weakly in the chair. His dark eyes were filled with painful struggle. His throat was dry as he took a breath. Then, he made a video call to Nicholas.
When the call was connected, Nicholas' sour expression appeared on the screen.
Sebastian spoke first, his voice filled with desperation. "What do I need to do to win her back so that she'll forgive me?"
Nicholas thought about telling him to leave Roxanne alone. But looking at his expression, which seemed on the verge of breaking, and hearing the humility in his tone, he hesitated.
