Chapter 108
The car pulled up outside the Loveti Manor.
Edith led Cody and Gavin inside. Gavin acted like he owned the place, strutting around with all the confidence of a spoiled rich kid.
Cody was here for the first time, looking this way and that. He noticed several maids were working at the manor, and one of the younger ones looked pretty cute, so he couldn’t help but sneak a couple extra glances her way.
Edith shot Cody a warning look, and only then did he quickly avert his gaze.
“So, you’re the bodyguard Edith brought in?” Karen looked at Cody and asked.
Cody knew this woman was the matriarch of the Lovett family. And from now on, she’d be the main person he’d have to keep an eye on.
“Hello, Madam, I’m Cody,” Cody said, doing his best to look serious. “I’m officially reporting for duty today. Just let me know what you need from me:
Karen had worked her way up from nothing to get where she was today, so she had a pretty good eye for people. She knew Cody was a thug
She thought, ‘Does Edith think a thug can change the balance of power in the Lovett family?‘
Karen sneered. She was going to make sure Edith learned the hard way
that all her efforts were for nothing,
“From now on, when Edith finishes her self–study at night, you’ll go with the driver to pick her up,” Karen said.
Then she added, “Just stick around the house for the rest of the time. Dallas, take him to get acquainted with the place. Find him a room.”
Dallas nodded, then led Cody toward the servants‘ quarters at the back.
The Lovett Manor was laid out so the family stayed up front, while the bodyguards and house staff had their own separate rooms in the rear.
Cody walked to the entrance of his lodgings and spat on the ground. He sauntered along, casting lingering glances at attractive maidservants. He casually picked a piece of fruit from the tray on the table and began munching on it.
Dallas shook his head and thought, ‘Edith is way too young and too trusting. How could she possibly think someone like this was fit to be a bodyguard?
‘Such people are clearly up to no good, and who knows what trouble they might bring upon the Lovett family. I would be watching him closely. If he tried to pull anything shady, I’d kick him out in a heartbeat.‘
Cody couldn’t have cared less about Dallas’s glare. His target was Karen. With Edith backing him up, no one dared give him a hard time, even if he didn’t lift a finger.
When he got to the room Dallas set up for him, he just threw himself onto the bed and went straight to sleep.
When Karen heard about Cody’s behavior, she sneered again. Edith brought in a guy like Cody, who made her feel downright insulted. It seemed that Edith didn’t even take her seriously.
Karen had thought Edith might be quite something before, but no matter how capable Edith was, she was still just a kid. And the people she picked were all over the place.
Edith couldn’t care less about how Cody was acting. Getting Karen to underestimate Cody was exactly what she wanted. Only if Karen lowered her guard would Cody have the perfect opening.
Edith looked over at Gavin and said coolly, “I’ve got homework to do. Suit yourself.” Then she grabbed her backpack and headed upstairs.
Gavin was about to go after Edith when Karen called him back. “What’s the rush? She won’t run away. Stay at the Lovett Manor for a while. You have plenty of nights. With so many chances, you think you won’t get your shot?”

At that, Gavin’s eyes flashed with excitement. “Aunt Karen, what do you mean?”
“You’ve twenty five now, so let me be blunt with you,” Karen said, taking a sip of coffee. “Edith isn’t even eighteen yet. If you try la marry her now you uncle will never agree. But if you cross that line first, that changes everything.”
Last time, Karen tried to pull the same trick with Henry, but it hadn’t worked out the way she wanted. Edith’s got her guard up high, and pulling this off wasn’t going to be easy.
“Your cousin is still serving time in prison, which should serve as a lesson,” Karen said.
Then she continued, “Listen, you can’t rush the things. Matters between men and women need to be approached slowly. I’ve paved the way for you. All you have to do now is seize the opportunity.”
“Don’t worry, Aunt Karen. I’m definitely going to make Edith my wife,” Ryan said. He used to be interested in the ten percent of Lovett family shares Edith held, but now, it was her looks that completely won him over.
As soon as Edith headed upstairs, the door to the room next to hers swung open.
Zachary poked his head out with a cold sneer. “You’re so naive. You’re about to get sold off and still counting money for them.”
Joseph stuck his head out too. “What are you talking about, Zachary?”
“You wouldn’t understand, moron!” Zachary snapped, shoving Joseph’s head back inside. Then he looked at Edith and said, “Stay far away from Gavin, got it?”
Edith couldn’t help but laugh, “Are you actually worried about me?”
“Who’s worried about you?” Zachary rolled his eyes. He said, “I just don’t want some flashy idiot like Gavin becoming my brother–in–law.”
Joseph’s head popped out again. “Isn’t Gavin our cousin? How could he be our brother–in–law?”
“You don’t have any cousins!” Zachary shot back. “You’re the dumbest one in the whole family. You even think Gavin is your cousin? Did a dog eat your brain or something?”
Joseph’s face fell, looking genuinely upset. From the moment he was born, everyone around him told him Karen was his mom, Hallie was his sister, and Gavin and Henry were his cousins. Besides, they’d always been nice to him.
Edith didn’t blame Joseph. His mother had died before he could remember her. This was how he understood the world, and changing it was no easy
task.
“Joseph, you’ll understand one day,” Edith said, giving Joseph’s hair a gentle ruffle. Then she shot a look at Zachary. “If you used half that brain of yours on your homework, getting into Sunspire High School would be no problem.”
Zachary curled his lip and thought, ‘My teacher also liked to say that. But my smarts just refuse to be put to use in studying. I just love to play, so what!‘
He turned and went back to his room, closing the door behind him. Although he didn’t like studying, he still had to do his homework. Otherwise, he’d break out in pimples, and that would be the end of him.
Edith just laughed and shook her head, heading back to her room to keep grinding through her problem sheets.
Night gradually settled over the city.
Several hundred feet away. At the Larson Residence.
Marcus sat at his desk, poring over paperwork while Kane stood at his side, reporting on the project’s progress
Marcus had always been like this. He was able to juggle two, three, even four things at once without missing a beat.
Suddenly, his pen paused in midair. In the blink of an eye, everything went dark. As his head crashed down onto the desk, his eyes flew open, dazed and

unfocused.
Kane was engrossed in the project documents, oblivious to everything happening. He kept saying, “Next, we need to iron out the detailed project plan. Mr. Larson, are you planning to oversee this yourself, or should we hand it off to your father?”
Marcus’s father was in charge of the family’s business operations in Sunspire.
Kane waited quietly for instructions.
Sitting at the desk, Marcus clenched the pen in his hand, his lips pressed together.
He couldn’t forget the last time he’d come to himself, Kane had locked him up in chains. No way he was letting that happen again. He had to get to Edith
But he had no idea how to act normally without raising suspicion. He set the pen down gently, rubbed his temples for a moment, and then gestured for
Kane.
“Mr. Larson, are you feeling tired? I’ll get you a cup of coffee,” Kane said.
Whenever Marcus felt tired, he’d always have some coffee to recharge. So Kane put down the documents and left the study to make coffee.
As soon as Kane left, Marcus got up quickly and headed out into the hallway. Servants of the Larson family bustled by, some nodding in greeting as he walked past.
Swallowing his impatience, he slowed his pace, doing his best to look calm as he made his way downstairs.
The driver came up to the door and said, “Where are you off to, Mr. Larson?”
Marcus didn’t even spare the driver a look. He just strode right out. He remembered Edith lived somewhere close by.
