Chapter 107

“Wow, Larry’s super handsome!” someone said.

“His voice is amazing. How is anyone this perfect?” another one echoed,

“Hey, you guys think Larry and Edith from Class One are actually together?” someone else chimed in.

“Quit making stuff up,” May jumped in. “Larry’s not dating anyone. He’s a senior and his studies come first.” She watched Larry speak on stage, her eyes gleaming with unwavering determination.

After Larry finished speaking, the parents‘ meeting wrapped up.

May stood by the lecture hall door. When she saw Stella come out, she immediately approached her with a sweet greeting. “Mrs. Larson.”

Stella smiled and asked, “May, what brings you here?”

“I heard there was a senior parents‘ meeting today and guessed you’d be here, so I made sure to wait for you,” May said obediently. “My Mom cooked up a whole feast at home. Would you and Larry like to come over for dinner tonight?”

Just theh, Larry walked out.

Stella asked, “Larry, do you have evening self–study tonight?”

Larry explained honestly, “No, I don’t have one. But I promised Edith I’d help her review.

Stella’s face immediately darkened. ‘She thought, ‘It’s Edith again. She was all over Marcus before, and now she’s all over Larry. No matter what Dwight and Fiona think, I’m not letting Larry get too close to her.‘

Stella smiled and said, “May’s family prepared a special dinner tonight. Let’s go over there for a meal. You can help Edith with her studies tomorrow.”

At that time, Edith walked over. She said, “I happen to have something to do tonight too.”

Stella couldn’t help but give Edith another once–over. She had to admit that Edith was the perfect blend of Melinda’s elegance and Vincent’s sharp looks, and looked very beautiful. No wonder Larry’s heart was set on her.

Putting on a gentle smile, Stella said, “Well then, Edith, we’ll head qut first.”

May was thrilled. To her, Stella choosing her over Edith meant she was the favorite. She took the lead, guiding the other two out of the school gates.

Edith frowned slightly. Her intuition told her that May had ulterior motives. She should have warned Larry, but with Stella present, it wasn’t appropriate for her to say too much.

Shrugging it off, she headed back to her classroom to grab a few papers to take home.

After the Merrinwick family fell from grace, they ended up in a not–so–fancy villa district in Sunspire. The houses here were old, with tall trees and thick greenery everywhere.

Flora stood at the door wearing an apron, ready to welcome her guests.

Stella glanced at Flora and let out a sigh. She thought, ‘She used to never even boil water, but now she has to cook for herself.”

“Come on in,” Flora called, stepping aside and urging everyone inside.

May’s father was out networking. They hadn’t hired a housekeeper, so Flora was the only one at ho

May set her backpack down, poured Stella a glass of water, and then turned to Larry with a bright smile. “We’ve got at least half an hour before dinner. Let’s go to the study room and get some homework done.”

Chapter 107

Larry grabbed his bag and followed May upstairs. Once they got to the study room, May poured two cups of coffee, but in her rush, she accidentally spilled half of it down the front of her shirt,

“Larry, go ahead and get started on your homework. I need to take a quick shower and change,” May said with a sweet smile.

The study room had a bathroom, so May disappeared inside to clean up.

May switched on the shower, and the water pattered down loudly. It was a bit noisy, so Larry pulled out his headphones and put them on, tuning everything else out.

May stood in the shower, bubbles covering her from head to toe. Her lips pressed together in nervous anticipation. After a good bit of indecision, she finally let out a deliberately dramatic cry for help.

The sound came from the bathroom, but Larry was totally oblivious. He had his headphones on and was lost in his Engloria listening exercises, laser- focused on the test questions.

May waited for several minutes, but Larry didn’t come to show any concern. Annoyed and unwilling to give up, May pushed the bathroom door open just a crack and poked her head out.

When she found Larry was still at his desk, she breathed a sigh of relief. Then she said shyly, “Larry, I just had a little accident and fell. Can you come help me, please?”

Larry spun around, and for a second, he was completely stunned.

Standing in the doorway, May was clutching a towel on her chest, the rest of her shoulders, arms, and collarbones on full display.

Larry whipped his head back around, coughing awkwardly. “Put your pajamas on first.”

“But my hands hurt, and my feet too. I really can’t get dressed by myself,” May whimpered. A hint of coquetry crept into her voice.

Larry, still not even eighteen and protected by the Larson family well, had never been thrown into something like this before.

He pushed his chair back and got up. “I’ll go get your Mom.”

“No!” May blurted out, almost panicking.

She was terrified that she’d blown everything. If Larry went downstairs calling for Flora, Stella would definitely catch on to what was going on. After that, all May’s chances with Larry would go up in smoke.

She took a shaky breath, putting on her sweetest voice. “My Mom would just scold me for being so clumsy. Please don’t call her. I’ll get dressed on my

own.”

She closed the bathroom door behind her, biting her lip as she forced herself to get dressed.

After transferring to Sunspire High School, many boys in her class fawned over her, and quite a few kept getting handy. Yet here she was, wearing next to nothing, and Larry wasn’t even interested.

But it doesn’t matter for May. She believed that she would make Larry willingly stay with her sooner or later.

The Merrinwick family had fallen hard, and Larry was the only lifeline she had left. If she could snag Larry, her family might claw their way back into Bonrea’s high society.

Edith was completely in the dark about everything happening in the Merrinwick residence.

She packed up her books and headed to the school gate, sliding into the car as usual. But she only spotted someone inside, whom she totally didn’t expect.

“Edith, I just happened to be passing by Sunspire High School and saw your family’s car out front, so I figured you’d be coming out any minute,” Gavin sald, shooting Edith a cheeky wink.

Then he added, “I heard there’s no self study at night thanks to the parents‘ meeting. How about I treat you to a little hangsutt. He checked tethe openly, clearly stunned by how gorgeous Edith was.

At first, when Karen set him up to meet Edith, he thought Edith would be some dorky country bumpkin. He didn’t even want to bother showing up Cur now that he actually saw her, he was totally blown away by her looks.

Even if Karen hadn’t asked, he was determined to have Edith.

Edith ignored the look in Gavin’s eyes and kept her smile. “I need to pick someone up. Would you come with me?”

Gavin agreed right away, grinning. “Sure, no problem!” He glanced at the driver and said, “Go do your own thing. I’ll drive from here.”

The driver, hired by Karen, knew which side he was on. So without even looking at Edith, he just got out without a word.

Following the address Edith gave him, Gavin drove over and finally pulled up at a shabby apartment complex. Cody was standing on the sidewalk and waiting for Edith

Cody had gone all out to clean up his look. His hair was freshly cut, and he was decked out in a shirt and suit.

Edith rotted down the window and said, “Cody, hop in!”

Cody opened the car door and slid into the passenger seat.

Gavin immediately assumed Cody was Edith’s boyfriend. His expression turned guarded.

“He’s my bodyguard,” Edith explained, introducing them. “Just call him Cody.”

“So you’re Edith’s bodyguard!” Gavin said, visibly relaxing. “Nice to meet you, Cody. I’m Edith’s cousin. Not a real cousin. We’re not actually related by blood.”

Cody caught on instantly.

Last night, Edith had sent Cody the Lovett family tree. Even though Gavin’s name wasn’t on it, he could guess that Gavin was probably Karen’s nephew. Since Gavin was Karen’s person, Cody put Gavin firmly on the opposing side.

But for the sake of Edith, he had no choice but to infiltrate Karen’s camp if he wanted to get anything done for Edith.

Cody was streetwise. A real chameleon who could talk his way in or/out of anything. In no time at all, he was palling around with Gavin like they’d been close for years.
