Chapter 110
Edith pondered the question seriously. She realized she didn’t dislike Dodo, nor did she hate him. She thought, ‘Should I really just throw him outh
Dodo burst out, “Didi, I hate you. How could you team up with those awful people and make me get a shot? I’m really scared of needles Please don’t make me do it again, okay?”
Dodo was mad, yet he still held tight to Edith’s sleeve, gazing at her with pitiful, teary eyes–trying desperately to get her sympathy even if he was upset.
His eyes glistened with tears that hadn’t fallen yet. In the depths of those eyes, Edith’s reflection was clear as day.
Edith wanted to ask him to return to the Larson Residence, but when the words reached her lips, she just couldn’t say them. She said, “Getting the shat will help you get better. Wouldn’t you like to be healthy and strong?”
Dodo choked out, “But if I get better, I will disappear.” He tried so hard not to cry, his eyes shining with tears that he refused to let fall.
Edith felt torn.
If Marcus’s split personality were ever cured, the other personality would disappear for good. Dodo knew it, which was why he resisted the shot. In a sudden outburst, Dodo flung himself into her arms, clinging tightly as if he never wanted to let go. He muttered, “Didi, I don’t want to leave you.”
Edith went stiff, unable to move an inch. After a long moment, she let out a soft sigh and reached out to gently stroke his hair. The words hovered on her lips, but she just couldn’t find anything to say.
She’d never had any real interaction with Marcus, but she and Dodo had become friends–and she knew exactly how much Dodo depended on her. She just couldn’t bring herself to say anything that would hurt him.
Dodo said, “Didi, I don’t know when I’ll disappear. Please don’t make me leave. I just want to stay with you a bit longer.” He put his chin on her shoulder and hugged her even tighter.
Edith pushed him away and said, “Alright, but you’re not allowed to leave this room. Stay put.” She thought, ‘I can’t let Zachary or Joseph find out about him today. Otherwise, they’d totally freak out.”
Dodo nodded hard and said, “Okay, I won’t go anywhere. I’ll just stay right here and study with you.” With that, he quickly took a seat at the desk.
Edith pulled open a drawer, tossed him a book, and went back to working through her own problems.
It was a kids‘ coloring book. After flipping through a couple of pages, Dodo lost interest. He quietly got up and started looking around the room,
He noticed a chocolate bar with a black wrapper sitting on the dresser, He wasn’t really into chocolate, but since Edith bought it, he figured it had to be delicious. He tore open the wrapper and scarfed it down in just a few bites.
He had barely swallowed for half a minute when an intens Then he doubled over and collapsed onto the bed.
throbbing pain suddenly seized the back of his head. He cried out, “Didi, my head hurts.”
Edith dashed over and realized Dodo had eaten the Magic Chocolate, the one the System gave her last time. She was dying to find out what was so magical about this chocolate.
She asked, “Dodo, where does your head hurt?”
Dodo curled up, clutching his head. He said, “The back of my head. It hurts so bad.”
Fragmented images flickered before his eyes. podo saw another version of himself a cold, distant face, sharp and menacing.
He tried desperately to shake off the images. But they crashed into his mind like a violent wave, relentless and overwhelming. He rolled in pain on the bed, unable to make it stop.

Chapter 110
Just then, the System said: [New mission. A true lady should have a helpful heart. Ease the child’s pain.)
Edith hurriedly pulled Dodo into her arms and began to gently rub his temples with her fingertips.
Thanks to the massage basics the System had taught her, she pressed the right acupoints, and little by little, Dodo’s pain faded as he finally relaxed. He laid his head in her lap, his eyes slowly closing, and the tension on his face melting away
The System said: [Mission complete. Host, you have helped ease the child’s pain. Reward: Vitality Nourishing Pill, capable of restoring the body’s vitality and prolonging life.]
A small black pill suddenly appeared in Edith’s palm.
Edith thought, ‘This pill is perfect for the elderly. The only older person I know is Mandy. But Mandy is just in her early sixties and healthy as a horse–she could roast anyone for hours without even catching her breath.
‘She absolutely has no use for the pill.‘
Even if Mandy ever did need the pill, Edith wouldn’t give it to her. Edith still remembered all too well the psychological damage Mandy had done to her s a kid.
Edith slipped the pill into her drawer, then scooped Dodo up from where he lay collapsed by the bed. She settled him gently and pulled the covers over
him.
She figured that chocolate must have had some effect on his condition. Chances were, when he woke up, Marcus would be back to himself again.
Edith was about to get back to working through some practice problems when there was a sudden knock at the door. Before she could say a word, it
swung open.
Zachary swaggered in, waving two test papers around. He said, “I’m done with the Engloria and math tests. Hurry up and check them for me, alright? And don’t make me wait until after eleven again.”
Dodo, who’d been tossing and turning in his sleep, was jolted by the commotion. Half–awake, he reached out for someone familiar–when his hand landed on nothing, he bolted upright, wide–eyed and confused.
Zachary nearly jumped out of his skin. He exclaimed, “Edith, are you seriously hiding a dude in your bed? Not this guy again!”
Edith thought, ‘I need to remember to lock my freaking door next time or I’m really gonna embarrass myself.”
“Zachary, you’re here. We meet again,” Dodo cheered, leaping off the bed and practically barreling straight at Zachary.
Zachary sneered inwardly, ‘There he goes, playing dumb again/Always putting on that act. He’s got one face when Edith’s here, and a whole different one as soon as she’s gone. He really knows how to put on a show.
Without warning, Zachary clenched his fist and swung at Dodo just as he came running over.
Edith grabbed his arm just in time. She demanded, “What are you doing?”
Zachary yelled, “That jerk decked me last time–now don’t even get to hit him back? Come on, Edith. Don’t tell me you’ve found a boyfriend and already forgotten about your family. How could you take his side over mine?”
Dodo asked, “What’s a boyfriend, anyway?”
Zachary shot back, “Quit pretending. Last time you sucker punched me when I wasn’t paying attention. So let’s have a one–on–one now if I lose, I’ll call you Dad and won’t even argue.”
Dodo frowned and said, “As if. I’m way too young to have a son your age. Nice try, though.”
Zachary nearly blew a gasket. He snapped, “Do you ever get tired of acting like this every damn day? You’re such a freaking weirdo–sometimes I just wanna deck you, you insane drama king.”

Dodo looked at him, ail pitiful. He said, “But Zachary, weren’t we getting along so well last time? How come you suddenly don’t like me anymore?
Dodo thought, ‘Zachary taught me how to play video games, even let me wear Didi’s pajamas, and gave me the best spot right in the middle of the big bed. He was so nice before, so why’s he acting so scary now?‘
His big eyes were loaded with accusation, making Zachary feel like the world’s biggest jerk.
Edith pulled Zachary aside and whispered, “Listen, Zachary, I’ve gotta be honest with you–he’s got something off in his head. Sometimes he’s normal, sometimes he’s not. His memory kind of blanks out in places, you know what I mean?”
Zachary just couldn’t wrap his head around it. He thought, ‘Are there seriously people out there with split personalities in real life?‘
He said to Dodo, “Tell you what–call me Dad, and maybe I’ll consider forgiving you.”
Dodo called out, “Dad.”
Edith and Zachary were speechless.
Zachary thought, ‘Okay, whatever. I’ll just accept he really does have an on–and–off split personality!
