Chapter 111
Edith really didn’t want her brothers hanging out with Dodo again. But Dodo was all too eager to follow Zachery into the next mom
Zachary was practically glowing with pride after finishing his homework, and with Joseph joining them, the three of them sprawled out on the fund, laughing and playing games like nothing else mattered.
Edith shook her head, feeling a bit helpless, and headed back to her own room to tackle more test papers.
Suddenly, someone knocked on her bedroom door.
Edith demanded, “Who is it?”
Gavin replied, “Edith, it’s me. Is Mr. Larson in your room? I made some coffee for him.”
Edith frowned, worry flickering in her eyes. She thought, ‘So that means someone from the Lovett family saw Dodo coming in earlier. Did they notice. anything off about him?‘
Edith walked over and pulled the door open. She asked, “Do you need him for something?”
Gavin stretched his neck to peer inside, but saw the room was empty. He frowned and asked, “Mr. Larson’s gone? When did he leave?”
Edith wasn’t about to waste her breath answering him. With her hand already on the knob, she said, “Are you done here? If you don’t need anything i’m shutting the door.”
Gavin stuck his foot in the doorway and said, “Hang on. Mr. Larson’s over here in the middle of the night for you. You and him…” He didn’t finish, just cocked an eyebrow at her with a sly, knowing look.
Edith shot back, “Does that have anything to do with you?”
Gavin leaned against the doorframe and said, “Edith, come on, I’m your cousin–I’m just looking out for you, afraid you might get played at your age. Why are you still hunched over homework this late?
“You gotta be worn out. Let me come in and give you a massage.”
Edith shut the door straight in his face.
Gavin was left hanging outside, looking utterly deflated. He scowled, “What the hell! If you weren’t kinda good–looking, who’d put up with that attitude of yours?”
Karen was chilling on the couch in the living room, her face plastered with a sheet mask.
When she saw Gavin stomp down the stairs, clearly pissed off, she asked, “Can’t even keep your cool? How are you gonna handle the big stuff? So, did you see Mr. Larson up there?”
Gavin shook his head and said, “Mr. Larson isn’t in her room. He must’ve already left.”
Karen frowned and thought, ‘Left? That can’t be right. I only went back to my room for a minute to do my face mask, and Marcus has already left?
‘No matter why Marcus showed up this late, one thing’s for sure–Edith is definitely tight with the Larson family. With the Larsons behind her, Edith’s bound to end up walking all over me and Hallie sooner or later.
‘If Edith actually marries Larry, then even if Hallie had a rocket, there’s no way she could ever catch up to that bitch. I have to get Gavin to make Edith his, and fast. But she just won’t give an inch.‘
Karen glanced outside and spotted Cody wandering around. A scheme popped into her head.
Cody had grabbed a few hours of sleep and was feeling totally recharged. He stood outside, cigarette in hand, debating whether to take the night off and

spend it gaming at an internet café.
But since it was his first day at work, calling in now would definitely make him look unreliable. So he just pared around outside, unable to make up his mind.
Karen ordered, “Go call that guy in here.”
Cody was just about to give up and head back to sleep when Karen had someone send for him.
With the cigarette still hanging from his lips, Cody ambled toward the door. Suddenly remembering he shouldn’t smoke indoors, he hurried to staff it out and tossed the butt in the trash.
He stopped in front of Karen and said, “Evening, Mrs. Lovett. What do you need?”
Karen eyed Cody up and down. She thought, ‘Aside from his looks, he really doesn’t have a single redeemning quality. Edith sure had some nerve bring somebody like him around.
‘But losers like this are the easiest to control. I’ll make sure Edith gets bitten by her own stray mutt sooner or later.’
By now, the servants had all cleared out, and Gavin had gone back to his room, leaving just Karen and Cody alone in the living room.
Karen peeled off her face mask and asked coolly, “How much is Dallas paying you a month?”
Cody was actually double–dipping–Edith was slipping him 9 thousand dollars under the table, while Dallas was covering him for another 3 thousand officially. Altogether, that meant he was making 12 thousand bucks a month.
But he couldn’t let anyone know that Edith was paying him extra, so he replied, “3 thousand.”
Karen sneered, “3 thousand? Seriously, how’s a grown man supposed to support a wife and kids with pocket change like that?”
Cody replied, “Mrs. Lovett, I’m not married yet, and I don’t have any kids,”
Karen’s smile turned even more mocking. She thought, ‘A guy who looks like he’s in his thirties and still isn’t married? Pathetic.
She said, “I’ll give you 6 thousand a month. Just keep tabs on Edith and let me know the minute she does anything.”
Cody grumbled inwardly, ‘Edith’s just the heiress, and she offers me 9 grand. Now the lady of the house wants to shortchange me with 6 grand? What? Does she think I’m some beggar she can toss scraps to?‘
Seeing him silent, Karen said, “Not enough? Alright, 9 thousand dollars. And if you deliver, I’ll bump it up to 16,000 dollars.”
She thought, ‘Edith’s shares are worth more than 3 million. For that kind of cash, tossing a few tens of thousands down the drain is nothing”
Cody asked, “So all I have to do is keep you updated on what Ms. Edith Lovett does every day, and I get another 9 grand?”
He thought, ‘Man, I must have hit the jackpot. 9 grand plus another 9 grand, then 3 grand more–that’s 21 grand a month. My buddies could barely make that much in a whole year!‘
He agreed instantly. He said, “You got it, Mrs. Lovett f’ll get it done–you can count on me.”
Karen, feeling pretty pleased with herself, headed back to her room on the second floor.
Edith didn’t miss a single word of their conversation–she caught everything crystal clear. Once things went quiet upstairs, she stepped out of her room
Downstairs, Cody was lounging on the couch, glued to the TV.
Servants weren’t supposed to watch TV in the villa, but Cody couldn’t care less. With the employers all off duty, he figured a little TV wouldn’t hurt. But the second he heard footsteps on the stairs, he scrambled to turn off the TV.
Chapter 111
When he saw it was Edith, Cody relaxed. He looked around to make sure nobody was watching, then grinned and said quietly, “M LUNE strike it rich. Your stepmom just offered me 9 grand a month.”
Edith shot him a glance, honestly surprised he’d just blurt that out to her. She’d thought for sure he’d try to play both ends and keep the extra honey without a word.
Cody said, “Hey, I’m just trying to stay alive here. If I kept it from you, aren’t you the type to beat me half to death?”
He thought, ‘Edith is scary as hell–she looks just like a frail little princess, but when she throws down, you might not walk away. Better to keep her int loop; better safe than sorry.‘
Edith smiled and asked, “You want even more cash?”
Cody nodded hard.
Edith said, “My stepmom has her hands on all the Lovett family’s cash–she’s seriously rich. She and my dad barely talk anymore; they’ve been in a cold war for ages. There’s an opportunity here, if you’ve got the guts.”
At first, Cody was clueless. But as the meaning finally clicked, his eyes nearly popped out of his head. He stammered, “Y–You actually want me to make your own dad a cuckold?”
Edith’s grin faded, her eyes turning icy cold. She thought, ‘Vincent had made a fool out of my mom for twelve years–now I am just serving it right back at
him.‘
In the end, what she really wanted was to kick Karen out of the Lovett family for good.
Edith fixed Cody with a cool stare and said, “I’m just throwing out an option for you. What you do with it–that’s your call.”
Cody swallowed nervously.
Cody was the kind of small–time punk who’d bullied men and hustled women more times than he could count.
Getting hauled down to the station for a little “chat” was just another Tuesday for him. He’d hardly blink before he was back to his old tricks.
What really made him hesitate was that Karen was probably north of forty. At thirty–five, he wasn’t keen on playing the young stud to an older woman- just not his style.
