Chapter 115
Dodo’s face was downright scary, dark, and intense. Whenever he kept quiet, it felt like a heavy, oppressive aura was spilling out from him. With a swift movement, he reached out and pulled Kane straight inside.
The instant their bodies touched, Kane knew something was off–this wasn’t Marcus.
The door slammed shut once again.
At this point, Karen had lost count of how many times that door had been slammed in her face–she was so mad that her whole face practically scrunched up in frustration.
She couldn’t shake the feeling that there was some big secret between Marcus and those three siblings–something she definitely wasn’t in on.
She held her breath, pressing her ear tightly against the door and straining to listen. But the soundproofing was just too good, and the people inuide were deliberately keeping their voices down. No matter how hard she tried, she couldn’t hear a single thing.
Feeling frustrated, Karen hurried downstairs and called over one of her trusted bodyguards. She said, “I need you to look something up.”
Kane was yanked inside, his face a picture of bewilderment. Before he could react, Dodo started frisking him, hands sweeping from his shoulders down to his thighs. Ticklish, Kane couldn’t help squirming and trying to wriggle free.
Dodo quickly fished out a syringe and a box of candy from Kane’s pockets. His face was icy as he hurled the items onto the bed. He said, “Didi, if this is what you want, I won’t fight it anymore.”
Tears shimmered in his eyes as he stared ahead. His hands were shaking. His lips were pressed together in a tight, thin line.
Edith was left with a feeling she couldn’t quite describe.
She and Dodo had been strangers until that night, when she’d gone looking for Shaun and literally bumped into Dodo. Ever since, whenever he appeared, he clung to her and couldn’t let go.
At first, it was irritating; eventually, she just got used to it. Still, she wished he could be normal.
Edith picked up the syringe from the bed and said, “Dodo, be good. This shot will help you feel better–I really want you to get better.”
His tears rolled down Dodo’s cheeks in silence. He pried open the box, shoveled a fistful of candy into his mouth, and forced himself to swallow them all.
“Mr. Larson!” Kane shouted, panic edging his voice. One candy would have been enough–cramming in that many could really cause trouble. But it was already too late.
With his mouth stuffed full of candy, Dodo swallowed it all. His voice cracked as he said, “I won’t bother you again, Didi. I’ll miss you.” His eyelids grew impossibly heavy, and he slumped onto the bed.
Edith still had the syringe in her hand. She tried to keep her voice steady as she asked, “Kane, what exactly are these candies?”
At this point, Kane couldn’t hide it any longer. He said, “These are the candies you gave Dodo earlier. I had them analyzed–they contain trace levels of a mild radioactive isotope that suppresses Mr. Larson’s alternate personality and accelerates his recovery.
“But taking so many at once could have unpredictable–and possibly dangerous–consequences.”
Edith knew that the candies from the System were completely harmless—no matter how many Dodo ate, there wouldn’t be any real effect. But that piece of Magic Chocolate might be the key to finally making a breakthrough in his condition.
Marcus, who had just passed out, suddenly cried out in pain. His vision was filled with a jumble of shattered images. It felt like his body was splitting in two–one side was a bewildered, naïve child, and the other was a hardened, mature teen.
The two personalities collided inside him, fighting for control. It felt like his head was going to explode.

Kane yelled, “Mr. Larson, let me get you to the hospital.”
“Get lost,” Marcus snapped, kicking Kane away. His voice rang out clear and cold, carrying a sharp, icy edge
Kane realized Marcus’s primary personality had taken over, but he’d never seen him in this much pain after coming back to himself before.
In the midst of his pain, Marcus suddenly locked eyes with Edith. Moments earlier, his voice had been cold and severe, now it softened into something raw and pleading. He muttered, “Didi, please. Don’t make me leave.“”
He reached for her hand, then froze halfway and jerked back, burying his fingers in his hair. His tone snapped back to ice as he demanded, “Get out. All of you–get out.”
He lashed out with a swift kick, sending the nightstand crashing to the floor.
Zachary was scared stiff. If he’d been doubtful before, now he was certain–Marcus really did have a split personality. He quickly jumped in front of Edith to block her. He said, “Edith, let’s get out of here”
Kane warned, “His other personality can get violent. Ms. Lovett, you’d better step outside for now.” Then he rushed over to help Marcus up and said, “Mr. Larson, just hang in there–I’ll get you to the hospital.”
Edith was starting to suspect this was all because of the Magic Chocolate. She thought, “The way his personalities are switching so rapidly–either he’s on the verge of recovery, or, if things go south, it could spiral out of control.‘
She stopped Kane and said, “Let’s wait and see what happens.”
Because of Marcus’s situation, Edith had gone out of her way to study up on dissociative identity disorder.
When someone had two personalities, an invisible wall kept the original and alternate personas apart, so they functioned as completely separate
individuals.
Once the alternate personality emerged, it resisted and even tried to erase the original. In other words, if Dodo ever gained full consciousness, he would eventually take over completely, replacing Marcus as the dominant personality.
The key to treating split personalities was to help both personalities communicate, share their fragmented memories, and gradually fuse into a single. unified self. Outside help could guide the process, but ultimately, real integration had to come from within.
This wasn’t something that could be fixed overnight. Some people spent their whole lives struggling with it and never really got better.
Marcus clutched his head, wracked with agony. When the pain stretched to its breaking point, like a string ready to snap, he blacked out once more.
Edith pondered, ‘Downstairs, Karen’s watching like a hawk, and the whole place is crawling with staff. There’s no way Kane can sneak an unconscious Marcus out right now!
So she said, “Kane, you just stay here and look after Mr. Larson. We have to get to school.” They’d been dealing with all this mess since the crack of dawn, and now they were seriously running late for class.
Edith and Zachary rushed downstairs.
Seeing them, Karen and Hallie sprang to their feet, and Karen asked, “Where’s Mr. Larson?”
Zachary replied, “Mr. Larson said he barely slept last night, so he insisted on getting another hour in. Hey Dallas, once Mr. Larson heads out, swap the sheets for me, will ya? I’ve got my own cleanliness standards, you know?”
“Sure thing, young master,” Dallas responded promptly.
Edith snagged a bun, grabbed her backpack, and headed out the door.
Hallie, on the other hand, had zero interest in going to school. She plopped down in the living room and settled in to wait. No matter what, she was determined to grab a moment alone with Marcus.

Chapter 115
Karen called over a maid to help Hallie fix her hair and get dressed up. Then she accompanied Hallie to wall in the fating room
By 11 a.m., Zachary’s bedroom door finally opened.
Marcus strode out in a tailored suit, his whole presence radiating an even sharper, colder edge. His jaw was clenched tight, and a fam dangerous intensity darkened his brow.
Kane followed behind him, head lowered.
Karen called out, “Mr. Larson, feeling better now? We had lunch specially made for you. Why not stay and have a bite before you lease?”
Marcus gave her a frosty, razor–sharp stare.
He’d already had someone look into Karen’s whole history–back in the day, she used some really dirty tricks to get into Vincant’s bed, way up step by step to become the lady of the Lovett family.
Edith ended up getting dumped in the countryside for six years, and it was all Karen’s doing–she set it up single–handedly.
Marcus smirked, his smile icy and mocking. He said, “Heard you opened up a beauty shop, Mrs. Lovett?”
