Hallie’s voice was gentle. But to Dodo, it was seriously irritating. He was dying to tell Hallie to get out, but the rules of the game said he couldn’t talk he forced himself to stay silent:

He turned his back, refusing to even look at Hallie.

That move felt like a slap in the face for Hallie. She thought, ‘Edith must’ve run her mouth to Marcus and turned him against me?

She forced a smile and said, “Mr. Larson, did I say something wrong?”

Zachary sneered, “Seriously, Hallie? You think it’s okay for a girl to ask a guy to sit in her room? Marcus isn’t that kind of guy.”

Hallie snapped, “I wasn’t even talking to you, can you just mind your own business?”

“Please, as if Marcus would even give you the time of day,” Zachary scoffed. He thought, ‘Dodo may be annoying, but at least the kid listens. Way better than that pain–in–the–neck Joseph.

Since Dodo had agreed to stay silent, there’s no way he’d even spare Hallie a glance.

But there’s no way Hallie would just give up on getting close to Marcus. She noticed that “Marcus” had his eyes locked on Edith the whole time—as if Edith had completely bewitched him.

She glanced over at Edith and said, “Hey, Edith, people at school are saying you have a thing for Larry, that you’re like, his girlfriend. Is it true?”

Dodo blurted out, “No way. Edith only likes me.”

Zachary immediately slapped a hand over Dodo’s mouth. He forced a laugh at Hallie and said, “You know, we are just goofing around.” He dragged Dodo out onto the balcony and pulled the door shut behind them.

Joseph walked over to Hallie and said, “Hey, Hallie, didn’t you say breakfast was ready? I’m starving, let’s eat.”

Still dazed, Hallie was pulled downstairs by Joseph. She looked back and saw “Marcus” standing there, head slightly bowed and locking guilty, while Zachary stood in front of him, totally looking like he was scolding him.

Hallie thought, ‘How does Zachary have the guts to scold Mr. Larson?‘ Then it hit her–the way “Marcus” had talked just now sounded totally werd almost like it wasn’t even a grown man speaking.

She turned around to check, but before she could get a closer look, Edith slammed the door shut with a bang.

Before Hattie knew it, Joseph had already dragged her down the stairs.

“Where’s Mr. Larson?” Karen asked, her face cold as ice.

Hallie didn’t know what to say. She turned to Joseph and asked, “Joseph, are you guys close with Mr. Larson?”

Karen’s eyes also landed on Joseph, too. Ever since Edith came back, she and Joseph had grown distant. She softened her voice and said, “Joseph, tell me, how did you guys meet Mr. Larson?”

Joseph thought, ‘We actually met him in Edith’s room. But I can’t let that slip. It is a little secret between us

He shook his head and said, “It’s my first time meeting Mr. Larson, but he’s actually pretty chill Really seems like a nice person.”

Hearing this, Karen grumbled inwardly, ‘He called Mr. Larson “nice“? Come on, that word has absolutely nothing to do with Mr. Larson–not in a million years.‘

Karen felt she just couldn’t get through to Joseph. With an icy glare, she stared up at the third floor room, practically wishing her eyes could bore right through the door and see what was really going on inside.

Chapter 114

Outside the Lovett Manor, Kane was getting ready to sneak in through the backyard balcony, just like old times. But he accidentally overheard perce of the Lovett Manor’s staff gossiping about Marcus.

He thought, ‘Mr. Larson showed up here in the middle of an episode, and nobody even noticed anything weird? Damn, Mr. Larson’s other personality really leveling up–he’s even starting to fool people now.‘

So, instead of sneaking around, Kane just strolled right through the front gate.

“Mrs. Lovett, Mr. Larson’s assistant is here,” Dallas announced, showing Kane into the house.

Kane greeted, “Mrs. Lovett, I’m here to deliver some clothes for Mr. Larson.” In his hands, he was carrying a clean suit and a dress shirt.

Karen said, “Mr. Larson stayed here last night, but as the hosts, we honestly didn’t expect him to. We ended up having him bunk with the kids–it’s entirely our fault.

“Could you please let him know and accept our apologies? We’d love to have him over for lunch today to make it up to him.”

Kane grumbled inwardly, ‘Seriously? If anyone should be buying lunch, it’s Mr. Larson. Ms. Edith Lovett has cleaned up his mess more times than I can

count.‘

He gave a light laugh and said, “Mr. Larson is really easygoing–he doesn’t pay any mind to minor things like this, so there’s no need to worry yourself, Mrs. Lovett.”

Karen definitely didn’t see Marcus that way. The only time she’d interacted with him up close, he was colder than a freezer–cold enough to make her hair stand on end.

Kane hesitated for a second, then asked, “Mind if I go upstairs?”

Karen rose to her feet and offered, “I’ll show you the way.”

They made their way up to the third floor, with Karen leading the way and Kane following closely behind.

Out on the balcony, Zachary was busy lecturing Dodo. He said, “Seriously, Dodo, why do you never learn? If people catch you acting all weird like this, you’ll be the one dying of embarrassment, not anyone else.”

Dodo asked, “But why would I be embarrassed?”

Zachary rolled his eyes. He knew exactly what Edith was worried about–if Marcus’s secret leaked while he was at the Lovett Manor, it would mean the entire Lovett family had offended the Larson family.

This was something that absolutely had to stay between the three siblings–no one else could know.

Edith said coldly, “Listen, if anyone besides us shows up, keep your mouth shut. Someone will be coming to take you home soon.”

– Dodo stood there in a daze. He said, “Edith, you promised you wouldn’t send me away again.” His eyes were fixed on her.

Edith saw her own reflection shimmering in their depths, and for a moment, she was speechless. Last time, she held Dodo down while Larry inserted the IV. This time, she really didn’t want to do it again.

Dodo trusted her so much; she didn’t want to shatter that trust again and again.

Edith said, “Dodo, it’s Tuesday, and I still have to go to school. Just go with Kane for now. He’ll take good care of you.”

Dodo yelled, “No way.” He rushed over and clung to Edith, hugging her like he’d never let go, desperate and stubborn. He wailed, “I don’t want to go. I don’t want to leave you, Didi.”

“Hey. Let go of her,” Zachary shouted, hurrying over to pull Dodo off. Zachary fumed inwardly, ‘He better not use his split personality as a free pass to get all touchy with my sister.‘

Chapter 114

Zachary was only fourteen, and Dodo was a full–grown man. No matter how hard Zachary tried, he couldn’t pry Dodo off Edith.

Edith knew perfectly well she could pull Dodo away if she wanted to, but she just couldn’t bring herself to do it. Just as she hesitated, there was a knock

at the door.

Dodo instantly let go, his face dead serious as he pleaded, “Didi, I swear I’ll be super good this time. If there are outsiders around, I’ll keep my mouth shut, really. Please don’t make me leave.”

He then clamped his lips shut and went to open the door.

Kane and Karen stood at the door, with Karen leading the way. When she saw Marcus open it, she gave a respectful nod and called out, “Mr. Larson.”

Dodo kept his mouth shut, expression totally serious.

Kane hesitated on the threshold, not quite sure what he was walking into. He thought, ‘Mr. Larson looks perfectly normal, but Ms. Lovett said he’d had an episode earlier–and she’d never joke about something like that. Had he already recovered?‘
