Edith was surrounded by her two brothers, who were fussing over her. She wasn’t planning to hide what happened tonight from them. She wanted her brothers to stop falling for Karen’s two–faced act.

She said, “After I confronted Hallie and Gavin last night, today Karen and Gavin ganged up on me. They actually hired five thugs, wanting to rape me.”

Edith lowered her gaze as she spoke. “Joseph, I know you’ve always called Karen ‘Mom‘ and trusted her, Maybe it’s hard for you to believe me, but…”

“I believe you, Edith!” Joseph stared at the blood–soaked bandage, his little fists clenched tight.

“She’s not even related to

me by blood. Calling her ‘Mom‘ was a mistake. How could she be so

vicious? How could she do something so cruel to you?”

“My mom is not vicious,” Hallie shrieked from her bedroom door upstairs. “Edith, you’re just making stuff up about her! What on earth do you want? Ever since you moved in, this whole place has been nothing but chaos.

“You’ve never liked me or my mom, and honestly, I bet you’d be thrilled if we both just disappeared, wouldn’t you?”

“Fuck!” Zachary yelled, kicking over the coffee table.

He jabbed his finger up at Hallie and snapped, “Who’s the one with the problem here? Ever since Edith moved in, you’ve been stirring up trouble and trying to turn us against her! Don’t think we

haven’t noticed.

“You definitely knew what went down tonight. Deep down, you probably wanted Edith to get screwed. over, just so you could be the only daughter in the Lovett family, isn’t that right?”

“Enough! Shut up, all of you,” Vincent said sharply. He rubbed his brow, obviously exhausted.

Turning to Hallie with a disappointed look, he said, “Hallie, I always thought you were thoughtful and well–behaved. Turns out I was wrong about you.”

“No, Dad, don’t just take Edith’s word for it!” Hallie called out in a panic. “I honestly had no clue about whatever Mom and Gavin were plotting.

“I was seriously just at home, practicing piano and working on my homework. I didn’t do anything, I

swear!”

Karen came in a moment later, completely exhausted. But when she saw Hallie being ganged up on by the other four, her anger snapped. “Vincent, if you’re mad, come at mel

“Why are you taking it out on Hallie? She’s also your daughter. You can’t just pick sides like this!”

Vincent just looked at her, his eyes steady and unreadable. The silence stretched between them. He didn’t say a single word.

Under his gaze, Karen felt uneasy. Her heart turned icy cold, like a huge hole had been ripped open

inside her.

“I’m so disappointed in you,” Vincent finally said, his voice cold.

He didn’t want to think about what happened at the Lovett family’s welcome party last time. He’d just let it slide. pretending everything was fine.

But this time, he saw everything with his own eyes, and he couldn’t keep sweeping things under the

rug.

Karen and Edith couldn’t possibly keep living under the same roof. Otherwise, sooner or later, Edith would be the one to get hurt.

“Karen, I’m giving you two choices. You pick,” Vincent said, every word firm and steady. “First, you move out by yourself.”

“No!” Karen snapped, instantly rejecting his first suggestion.

She had spent twelve years out there raising Hallie on her own, struggling every step of the way, only to finally make it inside the Lovett Manor. There was no way she was going to back down.

Karen thought, ‘This is my home. I’m the hostess here. Why should I be the one who’s moving out? It should be Edith that bitch. She should just crawl back to wherever she came from.”

“We’re down to the second option, then,” Vincent said, shaking his head. “Edith, you’re moving out with me. Dallas, you’ll come with us as well.”

“What?” Karen’s eyes went wide.

She thought, if Vincent really moves out, this place will no longer be the Lovett Manor. If we’re living apart, does that mean he’s planning to divorce me?”

“Dad, I’m moving out with you,” Zachary said. “I’m heading upstairs to pack right now!”

Joseph jumped in right away, “Me too, Dad!”

Karen clenched her teeth. If those four really left, then only she and Hallie would be left here.

She thought, ‘If Vincent lives with the other three, they’ll be much closer, like a real family. Then Hallie

will be excluded from the Lovett family.”

Karen sucked in a shaky breath and then said, “Fine. I’ll move out!”

“Mom!” Hallie rushed into Karen’s arms, her voice trembling. “If Dad says you have to go, then I’ll

leave with you.”

Karen kept her mouth shut. She wanted to see if Vincent would pick Hallie, or Melinda’s kids instead.

Vincent’s jaw was tight. He could tell that Edith and Hallie never really got along. Living together only. made things worse. Maybe putting some distance between them would finally give the sisters a shot. at actually getting along.

Vincent nodded. “Alright, Hallie. You can move out with your mom.”

“No way!” Karen gritted her teeth so hard she thought they might shatter, but when she glanced at Hallie, her tone turned soft and gentle.

She said, “Hallie, sweetheart, this is your home. You should stay here. I have a lot going on at work right now, so I’ll be living at the salon for a bit to handle business.

“When things settle down, I’ll move back. You need to be good and listen to your dad while I’m gone, alright?”

Tears poured down Hallie’s cheeks.

She thought, ‘Dad and Mom used to be so good. But since Edith moved in, all they’ve done is fight. Now Mom is even being driven out. How did everything end up like this? Why!”

Karen packed up and left that very night, taking two of the servants with her. She loaded five huge. suitcases into the car, and then they drove off, disappearing into the night.

Hallie shut herself in her room and cried her eyes out.

Vincent, his head pounding, went back to his study to lose himself in work.

Edith sent her brothers off to get some sleep. Then she settled herself in the living room and asked Cody to come over.

Cody shuffled in, head down. “Ms. Lovett, now that Mrs. Lovett’s moved out, you’re not gonna fire me, are you?”

“You’ve handled things really well. Why would I fire you?” Edith replied with a slight smile. “Just keep getting close to Karen and earning her trust.”

Cody looked a bit lost. “Ms. Lovett, I get it that you want me to gain her trust, but… What exactly are you planning?”

“Six years ago, my real mom died in a car accident,” Edith said, fixing Cody with a steady look. “I suspect Karen might have been involved somehow. What I want is for you to help me uncover the truth.

“Now Karen’s been kicked out and has no one to turn to. If you show up and have her back, she’ll trust you a whole lot easier.”

Cody hesitated for a bit before saying, “Ms. Lovett, aren’t you worried I might actually team up with her and turn on you?”

Edith laughed. “You really think that would scare me?”

As far as she was concerned, petty tricks like that couldn’t possibly threaten her–not with the kind of power she had.

If it weren’t for wanting to dig up the truth from back then, she would never have let Cody set foot in the Lovett Manor.

Cody instinctively pulled his neck in. Sure, he was tough enough to boss around a bunch of street punks, but Edith could probably toss him out the door with one hand if she felt like it. He couldn’t

afford to mess with her.

Cody thought, ‘Fine, just consider doing it for that 15 thousand. I should just try my best to work for Ms. Lovett. I can make money and flirt with a lady at the same time. Honestly, that’s living the dream.”
