It was Sunday morning. Mandy’s birthday party wasn’t being held at a hotel, but right at the Lovett
residence.
Early that morning, Vincent was already getting the three kids ready to go celebrate her birthday.
Edith spoke up in a calm voice, “Dad, Zachary ranked fifth from the bottom this time. I think he should stay home and study.”
Zachary weakly tried to defend himself, “But I want to go wish Grandma a happy birthday. I want to be a good grandson.”
“I’ll pass on your wishes for you,” Edith said, lifting the box in her hand. “I even got your birthday present ready. Just stay home and work on your studies.”
She shot Zachary a cold look. Zachary didn’t dare say a word. He just stood there looking all miserable and kept quiet.
Joseph said, “I’ll keep an eye on Zachary while he does his homework. If he tries to sneak out, I’ll call Edith right away!”
Edith chuckled, “Mr. Campbell will be here soon to keep an eye on Zachary. No need to trouble you.”
Zachary was speechless. He thought, ‘Mr. Campbell is like a demon–always making me do test papers, over and over again. It’s enough to drive me crazy!
“Then I’ll just do my homework with Zachary,” Joseph said as he blinked. “Zachary, you’ll buy me some snacks later, right?”
“Not bad, kid. You do have a conscience, after all. Come on, let’s head upstairs,” Zachary said, throwing an arm around Joseph’s shoulder as they went up together.
Edith watched them go, a smile spreading across her face.
Vincent felt a calm he hadn’t experienced in years, the same sense of peace he only ever had back when Melinda was still alive.
In the past six years, all his sons had grown so much, but Zachary in particular was getting more and more unruly. Sometimes, Vincent even wanted to give up, since he had plenty of sons.
if Zachary didn’t turn out great, there would still be Cedric, Joseph, and Shaun. Not once did he actually make the effort to spend real time with any of them, let alone try to raise them right.

Chapter 125
Vincent thought, ‘Edith is just a high school senior, yet she somehow still manages to look after her brothers, always taking responsibility like a real big sister. I’m a total failure as a father.
“Edith, I’m sorry,” Vincent said in a low voice.
Edith heard him, but played dumb. “Dad, what did you say?”
“It’s nothing,” Vincent sighed. “From now on, I’ll try my best to spend more time with you all. And after lunch today, I’ll go visit Shaun with you.
“Okay,” Edith replied with a smile.
She really didn’t need a father’s love anymore, but her four brothers still did.
They’d already lost their mother. If they lost their father, too, they would probably grow up with all kinds of issues.
Even if it meant pretending to be the perfect daughter arid keeping up a facade of harmony with Vincent, she didn’t mind–for their sake.
Edith hopped in the car with Vincent, and together they headed for the Lovett residence.
As soon as Edith left, Zachary dropped his pen and howled at the ceiling, “Why do I have to study? Ughhh, all I want is to go outside and play!”
Joseph blinked, all innocent. “Well, you only have yourself to blame for slacking off in elementary school. Now you regret it, don’t you? I got lucky.
“Edith came back when I was still in fourth grade, so when it’s my turn in ninth grade, I’ll have it way easier.“”
“Quit laughing at my misery!” Zachary smirked. “Look, Mr. Campbell and Mr. Hadley came together.”
Graham taught at the elementary school, and for some reason he was here, too. Joseph’s face. instantly fell flat.
Graham said, “Joseph, your math grades aren’t great, but I see you’re good at creative thinking. I picked some Olympiad problems for you to try.”
Graham tossed a few problems in front of Joseph.
Joseph was speechless. He thought, ‘Olympiad problems? I can’t even understand them. Mr. Hadley really overestimates me.!
Zachary also had a stack of papers in front of him, but seeing Joseph struggle made him grin

wickedly.
Graham and Logan went into the next room to talk shop, leaving the two just shooting each other looks, both suffering in silence.
Suddenly, Zachary’s phone started buzzing. It was Blake calling.
Blake said, “Dude, where are you? Weren’t we supposed to hang out today? You’re bailing on me again!”
“Got stuck with homework. Can’t make it.” Zachary sighed.
“The exams are over. Why are you still doing homework? Come on, everyone’s waiting!” Blake paused, and then added, “Oh, and Melanie’s here, too.
“She said you probably have pimples all over your face, which is why you’re too scared to come out. Don’t you want to prove her wrong?”
Zachary hung up the phone. He really wanted to go out, but with Logan watching him like a hawk, there was no way he could sneak away
Joseph blinked and said, “Hey, if the teachers weren’t feeling well, they probably wouldn’t bother
keeping an eye on us.”
He leaned in close and whispered something in Zachary’s ear.
The Lovett residence wasn’t their true ancestral home, but a spacious villa Vincent had later built for Mandy out in the suburbs.
The yard stretched wide, lined with leafy trees that whispered and danced in the breeze–a picturesque sight.
As soon as Edith and Vincent got out of the car, they bumped right into Karen and Hallie.
“Vincent…” Karen forced a smile as she approached.
Vincent kept a stony face and didn’t say a word.
“Everyone’s here. We can’t let them know we’re having problems, right?” Karen lowered her attitude. “Mandy’s getting older. Let’s not make her worry.”
She reached out and linked arms with Vincent. Vincent hesitated for a moment, but didn’t shake her
off.

Vincent and Karen went inside first, with Edith and Hallie following after them. They didn’t even shoot a glance at each other.
When the Lovett family saw Edith, they stared for a moment, almost not recognizing her at first.
The last time they’d seen her at a family dinner, they’d thought she was pretty, but now she was so
much more beautiful than before.
“Edith looks even better than her mother,” someone whispered.
“No kidding. Her eyes, her nose–every feature is perfect. Honestly, she’s got the kind of beauty that could put movie stars to shame,” another chimed in.
Hearing the relatives gossiping, Hallie was so furious she could barely keep her cool.
Every other time the family gathered, Hallie was always the center of attention. But today, Edith had completely stolen the spotlight.
Hallie forced a sweet smile and played along, “Edith really is gorgeous. The guys at school are practically lining up for her.”
Her words made the relatives shoot each other sharp, awkward looks.
They thought, ‘Of course, pretty girls never stay out of trouble. Isn’t she supposed to be in her senior year? Shouldn’t she be focusing on her studies instead of messing around with boys?‘
But under Edith’s clear, piercing gaze, none of them dared say a word.
Edith know
ue Hallie a sly smile. “Hallie, didn’t you take a break from school? How would you even who’s chasing after me at school?”
The relatives started asking, “Wait, you’re taking a break? What happened?”
“Hallie, why are you taking a break?”
“But weren’t your grades amazing, Hallie? Karen said you were top of the class in the exams this time.”
All the relatives immediately piled on, shooting question after question at Hallie.
Over the past six years, Karen had always put Hallie on a pedestal, treating her like the shining star of the Lovett family. This constant praise secretly grated on quite a few of their relatives.
But the moment Edith dropped the news about Hallie taking a break from school, everyone’s interest was instantly hooked.

Hallie stood surrounded by the crowd, her face burning with humiliation. She shot Edith a vicious glare, thinking, ‘How dare she bring this up in front of everyonel‘
“oh, my
mistake,” Edith said softly. “Even though Hallie broke the school rules, the school decided to let her back–mainly because Dad pulled some strings for her.
“You should probably go back next week, Hallie. Try not to fall behind on your classes.”
With that, she turned and walked inside.
Hallie was fuming inside, but she didn’t dare let it show. She forced a shaky smile and said, “Edith’s just joking around. Don’t take her seriously.”
Of course, the relatives were quick to start speculating the worst. The second they heard “broke the
school rules“, their minds went wild.
They thought, ‘What kind of rules could a high school girl even break? Wait, is she dating someone?”
They all exchanged glances, and in an instant, a whole soap opera was already playing out in their
heads.
