Hallie stepped up with a box and said with a smile, “Grandma, I picked out this emerald necklace for you. Happy birthday.”

Mandy opened the box, revealing an emerald necklace that caught everyone’s eye. Just one glance was enough to tell it was quite valuable.

Mandy couldn’t be happier as she grabbed Karen’s hand. “Vincent is lucky to have you as his wife.”

She threw a glance at Vincent and said, “You’d better be good to Karen. If you ever make her mad, I won’t let you off easily.”

Just as Edith was about to hand over her gift, Karen’s phone suddenly started vibrating.

Karen checked the caller ID–it was one of the servants from the Lovett Manor. Even though she’d only moved out a few days ago, whenever something happened back at the house, she was always the first person they’d call.

“Mrs. Lovett, something’s wrong!” the servant’s voice crackled with panic on the other end. “Mr. Campbell and Mr. Hadley both passed out. They’ve been taken to the hospital.”

Karen frowned. “What exactly happened?”

The servant said, “Mr. Zachary Lovett and Mr. Joseph Lovett put something in their water. As soon as the teachers drank it, they started throwing up and passed out.

“We’re heading to the hospital now. Madam, you and Mr. Lovett should come back right away.”

“We’re on our way,” Karen replied quickly before hanging up.

Then she turned to Mandy and said urgently, “Mandy, something’s wrong at home. Vincent and I need to head back right away.”

Mandy was big on omens–having trouble of her birthday was the last thing she wanted, it felt like a sign her luck would run out for the year.

She said coldly, “What on earth happened that’s so important you two have to rush back?”

Karen faltered, “It’s Zachary and Joseph. They caused some trouble. They stayed home to catch up on their lessons and must’ve tried sneaking off to have some fun. Somehow, they ended up poisoning their teachers‘ water.

“Both teachers passed out after drinking it and now they’re in the hospital, fighting for their lives. We don’t even know if they’ll pull through.”

The servant hadn’t actually muntioned poison or anyone fighting for their lives. Karen had just spiced up the story on purpose.

She dropped those words and strode off without a second glance.

Karen’s eyes welled up with angry tears. “Mandy, did you see the way Edith treated me? There’s no respect for me as her elder at all. I was just telling everyone what happened, and she just went off on
