The ward reeked of disinfectant. After having their stomachs pumped, the two teachers were now hooked up to IVs, the steady drip of fluids echoing through the quiet room.
“Ms. Lovett, we’re fine,” Logan said weakly. “It’s not the kids‘ fault. It happened mostly because the croton was past its expiry date.”
Graham added, “Kids are naturally naughty. Maybe we really were pushing them a bit too hard.”
Edith pressed her lips together tightly. She thought, ‘Were we really pushing them too hard?”
For someone like Joseph, still just a kid in grade school, maybe things really were a bit much.
But Zachary was about to finish middle school. There were only two months left until the high school entrance exams. There just wasn’t time for him to take things slow.
Zachary might have felt pressure, but he’d never realize just how much Edith was pushing herself, too. She crammed vocabulary and formulas into every spare minute, and even her dreams were haunted by science problems.
Now with piano practice added into the mix, time was so tight that she even had to schedule her bathroom breaks. She used to grab a quick nap at noon, but now even that was a luxury she couldn’t
afford.
Edith knew that only by forcing oneself past one’s limits could one ever really make it to the top. She couldn’t stand the thought of her brothers sinking into mediocrity.
But these were lessons she’d only learned after living through the bitter, crushing end of her previous
life.
Her brothers had grown up under Karen’s sugarcoated way of raising them, never really understanding the hard truth. Honestly, she couldn’t blame them for it.
“Mr. Campbell, Mr. Hadley, I’m really sorry,” Edith said earnestly. “Please take the next week to rest and recover.”
She went over to the water dispenser, poured two cups of warm water, and, making sure neither teacher noticed, discreetly crushed the Healing Pill awarded by the System, sprinkling half into each
cup.
She handed the cups to the teachers. “After I get my brothers sorted out, I hope you can visit us again.”

Logan and Graham both looked at Edith and sighed at the same time.
They’d been dropping by the Lovett Manor day after day, and had learned a lot about how things worked there.
This girl wasn’t even eighteen yet, but she was already taking care of her two troublemaking brothers. like she was their mom. Honestly, most girls her age wouldn’t even dream of handling something like
this.
The two teachers sipped their water slowly, and as they drank, somehow all the weakness in their bodies melted away in an instant.
Just a moment earlier, after having their stomachs pumped, they’d been nauseous and totally wiped out, barely able to lift a finger. But now, after finishing that cup, an overwhelming hunger hit them out of nowhere.
And those aches in their backs and joints that had been nagging them were all gone. They couldn’t feel better.
“Make sure to rest and get your strength back,” Edith said softly before heading for the door. She could tell that they had already recovered.
Out in the hallway, Zachary and Joseph instantly sprang to their feet when they saw her coming. They were staring at the floor, not daring to meet Edith’s gaze.
Edith’s voice was cold as frost. “Did you apologize to the teachers?”
“We already apologized,” Joseph mumbled under his breath. “Mr. Campbell and Mr. Hadley said it
was fine….
Edith gave a flat smile. “Of course, as your teachers, they’re not going to hold this against you. But that doesn’t mean you get to walk away from this like nothing happened
She strode forward, and then, seeing the boys still rooted to the spot, shot them a frosty glare. “Come with me.”
Zachary and Joseph exchanged a glance, and then quickly followed after her.
The Lovett family’s car was still waiting outside the hospital, but the chauffeur must not have expected Edith to come out so soon. He was nowhere to be seen.
Edith pulled open the car door and sat down in the driver’s seat. She said coldly, “Get in.”
Zachary and Joseph shot each other a confused look and thought, ‘Edith doesn’t even know how to

drive. What’s she sitting in the driver’s seat for? Maybe she just wants to teach us a lesson in the car?‘
They climbed in, one after the other. As soon as they were settled, the car lurched forward.
Startled, Joseph practically threw himself into Zachary’s arms. “E–Edith, do you even have a driver’s license?” he stammered.
“No,” Edith replied coldly.
She might not have a license right now, but in her previous life, she’d been a pro behind the wheel.
Edith floored the gas pedal, darting past several cars on the right and muscling her way into the main lane, the speed still climbing faster and faster.
Zachary was losing it. “Edith, we swear we’re sorry. We don’t wanna die. Pull over. We’ll do whatever you want, just stop, please!”
Joseph burst into tears. “Edith, just yell at me or hit me if you want–anything but this! I’m really sorry, okay? Seriously, I am.”
Edith paid them no mind, eyes locked on the road as she kept pushing the car forward.
The car drove out of downtown and soon reached the outskirts, heading slowly into a lonelier,
deserted area. This was the cemetery.
Edith stopped the car and said, “Get out.”
Joseph stared at her in a daze. “Edith, why did you bring us here?”
Edith looked at Zachary. “Have you ever been here before?”
Zachary shook his head, and then nodded hesitantly. “I think I have, but I don’t really remember.”
He thought, ‘It must’ve been ages ago. I came here with a whole crowd. I vaguely remembered myself sobbing nonstop… But why was I crying like that?”
Suddenly, Zachary’s pupils contracted. He remembered it now. This was the cemetery. This was
where his mom’s ashes had been buried.
He’d come here on the day of her funeral, and after that, not once–not for her birthday, not even during her death anniversary. Nobody ever thought about visiting here again.
The lonely wind blew through the cemetery, whipping Edith’s hair into a wild mess.
Ever since she’d gotten a second chance, deep down Edith had always wanted to visit this place, but

she’d never had the courage to actually come here. She just couldn’t bring herself to face her mother’s
grave.
But today, that urge came out of nowhere, hitting her like a bolt from the blue. She simply wanted to
come here.
Maybe when life got rough, the first person one instinctively thought of was always one’s mom, no matter how old one got.
Edith walked further into the cemetery, her steps guided by memory, until she stopped in front of their mother’s grave. In the black–and–white photograph on the tombstone, their mom looked gentle and beautiful, smiling softly.
Edith said gently, “Our mom was really

Joseph stared at the photo in a daze. This was the first time he’d ever actually seen what his mother.
looked like.
He didn’t remember her at all. There were no pictures of her at home, and he’d never felt much of a bond with her. But the moment he laid eyes on that black–and–white photo, his tears began to flow uncontrollably.
Edith dropped to her knees in front of the tombstone. As soon as Edith knelt down, Zachary and Joseph followed, both dropping to their knees beside her.
“Mom, I’m so sorry.” Edith’s eyes shimmered with tears. “They say the eldest sister is like a second mother, but I failed to live up to my role as their big sister.
“Mom, you know what? I had this dream–a dream about me and my four brothers, ten years in the future. Me and my half–sister, Hallie, we never got along.
“She kept scheming against me, and in the end, I was torn apart from all four of my brothers. Hallie went so far as to burn down our house–just to drive me out. Cedric jumped from the second floor and shattered his leg.
“Zachary didn’t make it out in time and his face was burned. Joseph got blinded by the smoke… And all four of them blamed me for the fire. But it really wasn’t mel
“In that dream, my brothers and/l turned into strangers–practically enemies. They lost all trust in me, and I just stopped caring about them. In the end, all five of our lives were left in ruins.
“If I’d only guided my brothers better, if I hadn’t let trivial things pull us apart, none of us would’ve fallen right into someone else’s trap…”
