Chapter 13
Chapter 13
The quiet street was growing even quieter, with fewer cars and fewer people.
Edith carried Shaun as she made her way back the same way she came. When she reached the bus stop bench, the man from earlier was nowhere in sight. But lying on the ground were the lollipops he had left behind.
She picked them up and let out a small laugh. Of course a stranger wasn’t going to wait around just because she said she’d
come back.
She slipped the lollipops into Shaun’s pocket and started walking toward the special school with him in her arms.
By eleven that night, the Lovett Manor was still brightly lit. Vincent and Karen were sitting on the couch, while Hallie sat nearby practicing the piano.
“Second day back in Sunspire, and Edith’s already staying out all night,” Karen sighed. “It’s my fault. I should’ve brought her home sooner. Maybe then she wouldn’t have turned out like this.”
Hallie hit the final key and turned to speak. “I heard she confessed to some guy from the Honors Class today. Maybe she’s out on a date with him right now.”
Hallie had been so pissed this morning she’d left school early, but she’d kept an eye on everything. According to Noreen, Edith had somehow gotten to know Larry Larson from the Honors Class–and even had lunch with him.
Larry was from the Larson family. Rich, well–connected, and the kind of guy everyone in their circle tried to impress.
Because of some old ties between the Lovetts and the Larsons, Hallie had once tried chatting with Larry, but he’d been cold as ice. Hallie was too proud to throw herself at someone who clearly wasn’t interested.
But in the photos Noreen sent, Larry had been following Edith around like a lapdog. The sight had left Hallie fuming with jealousy.
“Dad don’t blame Edith for this. No one’s really been there to guide her all these years in that little town,” Hallie said softly.
des, she’s almost eighteen. It’s normal for her to start dating.”
en and Hallie taking turns fanning the flames, Vincent’s face grew dark. He turned to Dallas and said coldly, “Send someone to find Edith. I don’t care if you have to tear all of Sunspire apart–bring her back.”
Dallas didn’t argue. His gut told him Edith wasn’t the kind of girl they were making her out to be. But right now, the top priority was to find her.
He also made a mental note: once Edith was back, he needed to get her a phone–immediately,
When Hallie moved into the Lovett Manor at twelve, she’d been given everything–phone, computer, game consoles, and so on. But Edith had returned this time with nothing but a tiny suitcase. A girl about to turn eighteen couldn’t go without a phone.
Just as Dallas was about to send someone out to look for Edith, footsteps sounded at the front door.
He looked up–and instantly broke into a smile. “Edith, you’re finally home.”
Edith gave him a small smile in return, then stepped into the living room.
“Edith, where were you this late at night?” Karen looked concerned. “School ends at three o’clock. The driver went to school

but didn’t find you. If you were out with a boy, at least let us know so your dad doesn’t worry-”
Edith gave her a half–smile. “Would Dad really worry about me?”

“What’s that supposed to mean?” Hallie frowned. “You didn’t come home all night, and Dad sat in the living room waiting up for you. Isn’t that enough proof he cares?”
Edith pressed her lips together. “Then why doesn’t he care about Shaun?”
Vincent tensed up right away. “What happened to Shaun?”
“Shaun went missing.” Edith said.
“What?” Vincent shot up from the couch. “He went missing? I thought he was at the special school–how could he just disappear?”
He grabbed his coat and rushed to put on his shoes, clearly panicked.
“I already found him and sent him back to school,” Edith said calmly. “You don’t need to go.”
Vincent visibly relaxed.
“Edith, can you not be so dramatic?” Hallie complained. “Dad’s not young anymore–don’t scare him like that. You can’t do this again.”
“You really don’t see Shaun as your brother, do you?” Edith said coldly. “He went missing. Unlike Dad, you and Karen didn’t even flinch.”
Hallie’s face went pale. The truth was, she wished Shaun would disappear, so of course she wasn’t worried.
Karen looked rattled. She was about to say something when Edith fixed a sharp gaze on her.
‘Karen, you’re the one listed as Shaun’s emergency contact. So why didn’t you answer the call from his teacher tonight?” Her voice was ice–cold, and Karen didn’t know how to respond.
Nad blocked that teacher’s number long ago. Her own life was already overwhelming–there was no way she would

If you didn’t want to deal with it, fine. But why didn’t you tell my dad so he could take care of it?”
She turned to Vincent. “Or is it that you already knew and just didn’t want to take a few hours to go down to the school?”
Vincent looked stunned. He’d been so caught up in work that he left everything at home to Karen.
Karen had always seemed so kind and dependable, taking care of everything for years. Over time, Vincent had stopped checking in on the kids himself. He never imagined she’d completely ignore Shaun.
As he turned an angry gaze toward Karen, she quickly said, “It’s gotta be a misunderstanding…”
“I don’t blame you, Karen. You’re not Shaun’s real mom after all.” Edith gave a mocking smile. “And Dad, I don’t blame you either. You’ve got so many people to provide for and so much work–of course you don’t have time for Shaun.”
“I’ve already handled the group transfer for Shaun. You don’t have to worry about it.” Her smile faded. “It’s late. I’m going to

bed.”
With that, she turned and headed up to the third floor.
Hallie didn’t expect Edith to drop a bomb like that and just walk off. She looked from Karen–whose Lace had darkened–to Vincent, whose eyes were still burning with fury.
Vincent and Karen had always been close. Hallie had never seen them fight, but somehow Edith’s few words had actually pissed Vincent off.
“Mom’s been busy with the new salon opening,” Hallie said softly. “She’s been swamped and didn’t have time for Shaun. It’s not her fault.”
Vincent said coldly, “We’ll talk about this upstairs.”
He headed for the master bedroom.
Karen gently stroked Hallie’s hair. “Your dad may sound angry, but he won’t yell at me. Don’t worry. Go get some sleep.”
After calming Hallie down, she followed Vincent upstairs.
