Chapter 14
Karen had lived a peaceful life over the six years of marriage. She was gentle and considerate, always knew when to take a step back, and had never once argued with Vincent.
This was the first time he had looked at her furiously. She felt wronged, but she knew this wasn’t the moment to throw a
tantrum.
“Vincent, let me explain…” Karen spoke softly and stepped forward to hold his arm.
But Vincent shook her off. “Do you remember what you promised me when we got married? You said you’d take care of all the kids. I trusted you. I left everything in this house to you, and this is how you repay my trust?”
Karen froze, then burst into tears.
How can you say that to me?” she cried, hurt. “I’m just one woman. Do you know how hard it is to take care of six kids?
‘Edith’s in twelfth grade, just like Hallie. I was afraid she’d ruin her future if she stayed in that little town, so I brought her back. I’ve been doing my best for her–can’t you see that?
And Shaun’s been doing fine in special school. I kept in touch with his teachers. They all said he was making great progress and that I didn’t need to worry. So I didn’t. How was I supposed to know he’d suddenly disappear tonight?”
Vincent was boiling inside. But more than he blamed Karen, he blamed himself. If he’d taken more time to check in on the kids, maybe Shaun wouldn’t have been ignored for half a year.
And if Melinda hadn’t died in that car crash, those kids would’ve had a much better life.
Karen saw the look in his eyes and knew right away–he was thinking about Melinda again. She didn’t understand why he couldn’t let go of a woman who was already gone.
I’m not their real mother. No matter what I say, you’ll never believe me,” she sobbed. “I’m not as beautiful as Melinda, or as weet, but… I love you more than she ever did.
ve you. And I’m willing to love all five of her children too. I’ve done everything I can–why won’t you just
Shoes so fragile that Vincent couldn’t stay mad. He sighed. “Get some rest. Tomorrow, you’re coming with me to Shaun’s school.”
He couldn’t calm down until he went to the special school himself.
Upstairs in the third–floor bedroom, Edith used the Super Hearing she’d gotten from the system reward to listen in on everything Vincent and Karen were saying downstairs.
She let out a quiet snort. Karen might’ve lived a happy and peaceful life before, but from now on, it was going to be nothing
but chaos.
Karen cared most about two things: Hallie and Vincent. Though Edith still wasn’t sure if Karen truly loved Vincent, or if she was just in love with the life of a rich man’s wife.
Either way, Edith planned to destroy everything Karen cared about, little by little.
Suddenly, someone knocked on her door.
Edith opened it and saw Joseph standing there, one hand in his pocket, his face stone–cold as always.

Chapter 11
She’ll been so focused on finding Shaun tonight, she almost forgot to check Joseph’s homework. She didn’t expect him to show up on his own
With a smile, she asked, Finished your homework?”
Joseph looked annoyed “As if I’m some kind of masochist Why would I ever do homework? he thought
He pulled his hand out of his pocket and tossed something at her. It was a phone. “Here For you; he said coldly.
Then he turned to leave. But Edith grabbed him by the collar. “Don’t think giving me a phone gets you out of homework tonight
Joseph was furious. He struggled hard, but he couldn’t shake free, ‘She’s seriously strong–way stronger than Dallas, he realized
He glared at her. “It’s already 1180. I’m going to bed. Let go of me!”
Edith didn’t care what time it was. She believed in getting things done the day they were assigned. No pushing homework to
tomorrow–ever
She pulled a worksheet out of her backpack, dragged Joseph into his room, and dumped out his textbooks.
“Pick one: recite a poem or write down your vocab list,” she said.
Joseph regretted everything. I should’ve never felt bad about her not having a phone. Why did I even bring it over tonight? Actually, why did I give her one at all? I’m literally creating my own problems
He snapped, “Poem.”
He grabbed his literature book, flipped it open, and started reading–loudly on purpose. If he couldn’t beat her, maybe he could annoy her. But he barely made it through the first line before getting stuck.
Edith chuckled and gently corrected his pronunciation and explained the meaning of the line.
I know I don’t need your help!” Joseph cut her off and went right back to reading.
Jedn’t find him annoying. His voice gave her strength.
just laid out a tenth–grade Engloria test paper when the system’s voice rang in her head. [New mission: Complete Engloria test on your own. Passing score required.)
Minutes ticked by Joseph hadn’t wanted to memorize the poem at first, but as he kept reading, he slowly got the hang of it. He closed the book–and to his surprise, he could actually recite the whole thing.
Edith had thought the test would be difficult, but as she kept writing, she realized some of the question types looked familiar, She’d seen them earlier that day–and Cathy had even explained some to her.
Cathy had only gone over them once, but somehow, Edith remembered everything. For questions that were similar, she could figure out the answers right away.

She glanced at the time–it was already 12:30 am.
She said to Joseph coolly, “I’m going to supervise your studies every day. If you don’t finish your work, you’re not allowed to sleep.”

Chapter 14
With that, she walked out.
Joseph clenched his teeth but realized he didn’t actually hate Edith that much anymore.
Sure, she forced him to study with brute strength. And she was always bossy. But when she had him memorize the poem, he’d felt surprisingly calm inside.
When he was younger, teachers had cared about him. Later, they all gave up. And at home, no one cared about his studies.
When no one was watching him, he played games whenever he wanted, went out whenever he felt like it. It felt like freedom -but honestly, it was boring.
Now, for the first time, life felt like it had a purpose.
He was starting to think maybe Edith wasn’t as bad as Karen made her out to be. Edith cared about Shaun, and she cared about him too.
