Chapter 130
May stopped at the door, cocking her head. With her ponytail swinging high, she looked every bit the picture of a cheerful teen.
Afraid of disturbing the others, Larry quickly gathered his books and stepped outside. “What are you. doing here?”
May gave him a playful blink. “Didn’t Mrs. Larson tell you? I’m staying over at your place tonight, and tomorrow I’ll head to Bonrea with you guys.”
She raised her voice on purpose, making sure Edith heard every word.
In fact, even if she hadn’t spoken louder, Edith could have heard her perfectly well.
Edith frowned. She remembered that this was exactly the time, in her previous life, when May got
kicked out of school and Larry was forced to quit as well.
She could never figure out how those two things were linked. Even if May and Larry were dating, the school would never have expelled her, and Larry would never have had to leave. She couldn’t see where the real problem lay.
“Edith, I have to go,” Larry said with a smile at Edith before leaving with May.
Edith squinted as she watched them leave. She slung her bag over her shoulder, strode to the gate, got into the car, and told the driver to speed home.
Fifteen minutes later, she arrived at the Lovett Manor. As soon as she walked in, she saw Joseph and Zachary sitting at the coffee table, busy with their homework.
Joseph said, “Edith, I memorized three poems and thirty vocabulary words.”
Zachary quickly added, “Edith, I’ve finished two whole math papers.”
Edith only gave a faint nod before heading upstairs. She slammed the door behind her and turned on her laptop.
Downstairs, the two boys exchanged helpless looks. Joseph’s eyes brimmed with tears. “I’ve been so good this whole week. Why won’t Edith say a single word to me?”
Zachary pursed his lips. “Maybe it’s because I scored seventh from the bottom last time. As long as I do better on the next exam, Edith will forgive me. Come on, let’s keep working.”
He pulled out a science paper and started working through the problems.

Joseph sighed. He was just a fourth grader, and he didn’t even have that much homework. However, he couldn’t just sit and watch Zachary study. He thought, ‘What if Edith forgives only him and not
me?”
He reluctantly pulled out the advanced exercises Graham gave him and started struggling through
them.
As night deepened, a car pulled up in front of the Larson Residence. Larry and May stepped out
together.
“Wait for me, Larry.” May hurried after him and slipped her arm through his.
Larry frowned and quickly shook her off. He remembered Edith saying that he couldn’t let others mistake his relationship with May.
As he strode inside, May stamped her foot in frustration, annoyed at how dense he was.
“Hi, May,” Stella greeted her with a smile. “Make sure you sleep early tonight. We’ll have to be up around three in the morning.”
May replied sweetly, “I want to do a paper before sleeping. Mrs. Larson, where should I do my
homework?”
“Larry, take May upstairs to do her homework with you,” Stella said.
Larry had no choice but to comply. He led May upstairs to the bedroom. The room was big, with a resting area on one side and a study space on the other. The desk was wide and long, leaving at least
1.5 feet between them.
It was not until eleven at night that Bernard finally returned from work. Loosening his tie, he said.
sternly, “Call Larry down. I need to check on his progress.”
Every time he came home, he would ask about Larry’s schoolwork. Larry’s excellence owed much to his strict discipline.
Stella said with mild reproach, “Larry is in the middle of his homework. Don’t disturb him now. Also, that scary look of yours will spook May.”
Bernard frowned. “Is May here?”
Stella said with a smile, “Jenna has a diabetic attack and wants May nearby. She’s coming with us to Bonrea tomorrow, so I’ll let her stay here tonight. She and Larry are doing their homework together.”
After a short pause, Bernard said, “Once this is over, stop being so close to the Merrinwick family.”

Stella frowned. “Am I supposed to turn a blind eye to the Merrinwick family in their time of trouble, just like everyone else?”
“That’s not what I mean,” Bernard said, rubbing his forehead. “The Merrinwick family is trying to make a comeback. If you’re too close to them, people will assume we’re siding with them. Do your understand?”
“May is just a kid. She knows nothing about this,” Stella said with a sigh. “Fine. When we’re back from Bonrea, I’ll find a reason to keep my distance from the Merrinwick family.”
Only then did Bernard look satisfied, and he went off to his study to handle his work.
Stella told the maid, “Bring two cups of milk upstairs for the kids in about ten minutes.”
No sooner had she spoken than a servant hurried in. “Mrs. Larson, Edith is at the gate. She says she has something to discuss with Larry.”
Stella’s eyes showed her displeasure. Edith’s showing up late at night to see Larry didn’t sit right with her. She forced a smile and said, “Let her in.”
Edith stepped in from the yard. She looked around but didn’t see Larry, so she asked, “Mrs. Larson, has Larry gone to bed?”
Stella took a sip of water and asked, “Edith, I know you’re a good child. Just be straight with me. What’s going on between you and Marcus?”
Edith frowned, thinking, ‘Larry’s situation is already troubling enough. Why is she suddenly bringing up Marcus?‘
She replied, “I’m friends with Marcus, and also with Larry. I came this late only out of concern for him. Could you ask him to come out for a moment? I just want a word”
Stella smiled, clearly unconvinced. She said flatly, “Larry is already asleep. You can come again another time.”
Edith could clearly feel Stella didn’t like her–there was open hostility in her tone. Larry was too simple–minded, but Stella wasn’t someone easy to mess with. She thought maybe she should tell her the truth.
She thought, ‘Mrs. Larson is an experienced woman. She won’t be deceived by May, right?”
Edith pulled a paper out of her bag and passed it over. “I discovered that in the past half month, May has gone again and again to a gynecology and obstetrics hospital.

Stella took the paper. It detailed May’s movements over the past weeks. Other than school and home, her most frequent stop was the hospital, followed by bars, which she visited three to four times a
week.
Stella thought of May’s well–behaved appearance, then glanced at the paper. There was no way she could keep believing the girl was as innocent as she acted.
Edith said, “No offense, but May has been clinging to Larry at school, and even making others believe she’s his girlfriend. Even if he really liked her, that’s no reason for her to hurt his studies. That’s all I wanted to say.”
Stella frowned. She and Flora had always been close, and she had treated May like a daughter. She had always believed her to be an innocent girl and never once suspected that she was capable of such disgraceful behavior.
She could hardly believe she had allowed May to stay at the Larson Residence. If word of this reached Sunspire High School, the teachers and students might think she was encouraging Larry to indulge in a teenage affair.
With that in mind, Stella quickly ordered the servant, “Bring Larry here. Now.”
