The servant knocked on the door. Inside, May, who had been undressing Larry, was startled. She dared not make a sound, hurriedly dragged the stripped Larry onto the bed, and began undressing

herself.

Then the doorknob turned.

May was relieved she had locked the door, yet cursed her choice of a dress today. With ties and a button at the back, the more nervous she became, the harder it was to take off.

“May, calm down. This is your only chance. Whether the Merrinwick family can rise again depends entirely on this.” She kept telling herself this over and over, trying to steady her nerves.

From outside came the maid’s panicked voice. “Mrs. Larson, the door is locked, and there’s no sound inside. I usually keep the key in the lock, but now I don’t know where it is.”

Stella’s heart pounded with dread, a crushing premonition seizing her. She ordered sharply, “Get the bodyguards to smash the door open.”

Before she finished speaking, Edith was already making her way upstairs. “Let me do it.”

Stella’s face darkened. “You’re too small to break it open.

“Come on, Mrs. Larson, don’t underestimate me,” Edith replied as she went. “May is only sixteen, yet dares things women of twenty–six would never risk. I may not yet be eighteen, but my strength. surpasses most adults.”

With that, she strode to the door, stepped back, and with a fierce kick, drove a gaping hole through

the solid door.

Through the hole, they could see clearly that May, naked, was crawling onto the bed, while Larry lay there with his eyes closed.

The maid gasped sharply. Moments ago, when the door wouldn’t open, she thought Larry and May had fainted. Never had she imagined they were doing this.

Stella was burning with anger. She shoved the maid out of the way and rushed in. Then she yanked May by the hair, threw her to the floor, and slapped her hard.

Three consecutive slaps left May’s face swollen. “What have you done to my son?” Stella shouted, lifting her foot and kicking May in the chest.

May’s mind went blank. She couldn’t understand how Stella had gotten in so fast. If she had had just

one more second, she would have been under the blanket with Larry, and her plan would’ve worked.

She said, “Mrs. Larson, you got me wrong.”

“Shut up.” For once, the always–elegant Stella erupted into fury. She couldn’t believe how had been, fooled by a sixteen–year–old girl she had thought was innocent.

Setting aside her fury, she hurried to check on Larry.

Larry’s face was flushed, his breath even. He hadn’t been harmed–just knocked out by some drug.

“Send Larry to the hospital,” Stella commanded.

The servants at the door rushed in. When they lifted the blanket, they saw Larry had no clothes on.

Edith looked away and said calmly, “Mrs. Larson, it seems you’ll be busy with this. I’ll leave you to it.”

Stella looked at her with mixed feelings. She had always been wary of Edith, but without her, Larry would have fallen fully into May’s trap..

She figured if the Merrinwick family could let May do something like this, they must already have a plan to make the Larson family take responsibility. Just thinking about Larry being dragged into such. a scandal by May made her furious.

“Edith, you really helped the Larson family. Thank you.” Stella’s tone was sincere. “No wonder Larry thinks of you as a friend. I’m sorry for being biased against you before.”

Edith smiled. “It’s fine. I’ll be going now.” Then she left the Larson Residence.

Stella’s gaze darkened as she looked down at the collapsed May. “Shall I call your parents here, or will you do it yourself?”

Bare and trembling, May crawled forward and clutched at Stella’s leg. “Mrs. Larson, I’m sorry. I truly love Larry, and he said he liked me, too.

“I’m sorry, I didn’t mean it. Please don’t tell my parents, or they’ll kill me.”

With just a bit of begging, she managed to take the Merrinwick family out of the mess.

However, Stella simply could not believe this had nothing to do with the Merrinwick family. Without her parents‘ instructions, no sixteen–year–old girl would dare act in such a way.

Just then, Bernard walked in,

Stella quickly threw a blanket over May and asked, “What did you find out?”

Bernard had two reports in his hands, his voice chilling. “She underwent artificial insemination at the hospital.”

“What?” Stella could hardly believe it. “Does she plan to get pregnant and pin it all on Larry? How could she do something like this?”

Bernard said coldly, “The Merrinwick family is scheming. Now that they’ve been kicked out of Bonrea,

they will surely look for Mrs. Merrinwick contributed to the country in her youth, so the family wasn’t affected when they fell from grace.

“She still lives comfortably at the military sanatorium, but from today on, her easy life is finished.”

May’s eyes widened. “No, this is my fault. It has nothing to do with my grandma. Please don’t hurt her.

I’ll take all the blame.”

Jenna was the only member of the Merrinwick family still–living in Bonrea. She could get the latest news and use her connections to get things done. If she got kicked out, too, the Merrinwick family would have no chance to

recover.

Stella sneered. “Isn’t your father planning to start a business in Sunspire? Tell him to give up. The Larson family won’t let him have any business there.”

May stared blankly, realizing that the Larson family intended to crush them utterly. She thought, “What have I done wrong? No, I haven’t done anything yet. How could they treat us so mercilessly?”

After running in the neighborhood for half an hour, Edith finally got home. It was past midnight, and the house was quiet.

She noticed two people in the living room, and as she approached, she realized that Zachary and Joseph were still doing their homework.

Joseph was younger and indeed had less homework, so he had fallen asleep with his pen in hand on the coffee table. Zachary was biting his pen, struggling to solve a math problem.

As Edith walked by, he looked up and asked, “Edith, I can’t figure out this problem. Can you help me?”
