The Larson Residence was sprawling. The crystal chandelier bathed Marcus in brilliant, dazzling light.
Marcus was in his early twenties, and the youthful softness had faded from his handsome features, replaced by a mature, striking sharpness.
As soon as Fiona, who was usually spirited, spotted Marcus, she quieted right down.
Fiona cleared her throat and said, “The fortune–teller said a happy occasion in the family would help your dad recover faster. Since Larry already has a girlfriend, maybe we should go ahead and get them engaged.”
Marcus said coolly, “I think that sounds reasonable.”
Thank goodness Larry’s old enough now; otherwise, Mom would be giving me those pitiful looks, hoping I’d hurry up and engage someone. With Larry as the buffer, I get to dodge that bullet for a while, Marcus wondered.
Larry’s eyes went wide in disbelief. “Uncle Marcus, how could you team up with Grandma like that? Mom, say something. You know Edith better than anyone; you know we’re just friends, seriously, nothing romantic going on.”
Stella was about to jump in and rescue her son when Marcus narrowed his eyes. “Edith?”
“Yeah, Edith–Edith Lovett. Wait? Uncle Marcus, you know her, too,” Larry blurted out, turning to Marcus. “Uncle Marcus, help me explain things to Grandma, please.”
Marcus pressed his lips together, his expression suddenly serious. “She’s in Bonrea?”
‘Otherwise, how would Mom even know about Edith?‘ Marcus wondered.
“Edith came to Bonrea for a piano competition,” Larry explained. “She’ll be here for four or five days.”
Larry kept sweetly talking about Edith, and Marcus’s expression grew even darker.
‘What did I use to call that girl?‘ Marcus wondered to himself. ‘Wasn’t it always Miss Lovett? It seems I only ever called Edith by her first name once.’
Memories he’d rather forget came flooding back, making Marcus’s mood sink even deeper.
Marcus spoke up, his tone calm but firm, “Edith isn’t even eighteen yet. Mom, don’t mess around with this.”
Faced with Marcus, Fiona could only sigh and hold her tongue, not knowing what to say.
Marcus turned to Larry. “Do you know which hotel she’s staying at?”
“Maplewood Hotel, I think? Never heard of it, honestly. No idea where it is,” Larry said, scratching his head. “Uncle Marcus, why do you want to know, anyway?”
Marcus ignored him and walked straight out.

Fiona looked completely stunned. “He’s not going to find Edith, is he?”

“I asked Edith, and she said she and Marcus are just friends,” Stella said. “Larry, do you know how they met?”
Larry hesitated for a moment but decided to tell the family. After all, everyone already knew about Marcus’s condition, so it wasn’t really betraying his privacy.
“Once, Uncle Marcus got sick, and Edith saved him. She even took him home and let him stay the night,” said Larry.
“What?” Fiona shot up from her seat. “So, Edith actually knows about Marcus’s other personality?”
Larry nodded. “But don’t worry, Grandma. Edith isn’t the type to gossip. She’d never let that secret slip.”
Fiona’s mind was a whirlwind. Marcus had always been cold and indifferent, never paying anyone much attention.
Yet tonight, he’d taken the initiative to ask Larry where Edith was staying. It looked like he was really going to seek her out. There really weren’t many people out there who could make Marcus care this much.
She’d meant to find Larry a girlfriend, yet somehow she’d ended up uncovering a big family secret instead.
Fiona didn’t dare grill Marcus the way she did Larry, so she just quietly kept this matter to herself for now.
Marcus stepped out of the Larson Residence, opened the driver’s door, and got in.
Kane rushed after him. “Mr. Larson, where are you headed? Let me drive.”
“No need.” Marcus cut him off. He slammed the car door, and the vehicle shot forward, tearing out of the driveway.
Kane jumped in surprise. ‘Wait, Mr. Larson’s condition isn’t flaring up again, is it? But the other personality can’t drive. I must be overthinking things.‘
It was almost nine o’clock at night.
After finishing her physics problems, Edith got ready for a shower and some sleep. She needed all the rest she could get to give it her best shot in tomorrow’s competition.
Edith stuffed her books into her backpack and dug through her suitcase for something to wear.
With snacks piled up in more than half the space, she had to move them aside first. Finally, she pulled out her pajamas, a new pink nightdress Joseph had picked out for her.
It was complete with lace at the collar and cute strawberry prints, seriously adorable.
After her shower, Edith was drying her hair when someone knocked on the door.
Thinking it was Kerrie from next door coming to remind her about tomorrow’s competition, Edith opened the door without a second thought.

But when she saw the familiar face, her hand froze mid–air. “Mr. Larson, what are you-”
‘Wait, that can’t be right, she thought. ‘If someone was coming to find me, it should be Dodo, not Marcus. So is this Dodo at the door?
‘But that doesn’t really make sense. If it were Dodo, he’d definitely call me Edith and throw himself into my
arms.‘
Edith stayed quiet, just waiting to see what he would do next.
Marcus noticed her damp hair and the cute pink pajamas she was wearing. He felt his ears grow hot.
He hesitated for a long moment before finally saying, “I heard from Larry you were in Bonrea. Hope I’m not bothering you.”
When Marcus spoke, Edith immediately recognized him. She didn’t invite him in, remaining composed at the doorway. “Mr. Larson, it’s late; what brings you here?”
“My condition has been improving, and I’ve started recalling everything about my other personality,” Marcus admitted, visibly uneasy. “I realize now that he put you through a lot.
“I didn’t know before, but now that I do, I couldn’t just ignore it–I needed to come and apologize to you myself.”
Edith stared at him in shock. ‘Wait, he’s actually here just to say sorry?‘ she wondered.
Honestly, when Dodo first kept clinging to her, Edith couldn’t help but find it a little annoying. But in the end, she had to admit he was actually pretty adorable.
The moment Marcus ate that chocolate, it felt like his two personalities started to merge, making his condition almost normal again. ‘But does that mean Dodo’s gone for good?‘ Edith wondered.
Her words slipped out before she could stop herself. “So, Dodo isn’t coming back anymore, is he?”
Almost the moment Edith asked that question, Marcus felt a powerful force stirring inside him, something desperate to break free, his other personality.
He’d always managed to keep it under control, but just hearing her say Dodo seemed to summon it, like the name itself was a trigger.
Suddenly, the other personality was fighting its way out, paying no heed to all his attempts to suppress it.
A frosty edge appeared in his expression as he struggled desperately to keep it locked down.
Marcus kept silent, and Edith figured she must’ve touched on something he’d rather not discuss.
Quickly, she said, “Hey, it’s nothing important, really. If it’s not convenient to talk about, just forget it. It’s getting late, Mr. Larson. Go get some rest, okay?”
She offered a polite smile, then simply shut the door and went back to drying her hair, putting the whole awkward conversation out of her mind.

Standing outside her door, Marcus looked seriously annoyed with himself. Coming over in the middle of the night wasn’t just about apologizing.
He’d actually wanted to offer her somewhere better to stay. This hotel was run–down, and the soundproofing was terrible.
He couldn’t help worrying that she might not get enough
rest
monight, and it could affect her performance
tomorrow.
If his other personality hadn’t suddenly lost control, there was no way he would have let himself slip like that in front of Edith.
Standing there in his frustration, Marcus suddenly felt a wave of crushing sadness creep in–feelings that didn’t even belong to him, but to the other personality.
Normally, their emotions never mixed, but at that moment, it was like he was drowning in Dodo’s endless heartbreak.
Marcus knew all too well what the other personality was after. But he wouldn’t let it happen.
As Marcus turned to leave, that overwhelming sadness crashed over him even harder. His eyes stung, going red, and before he could stop it, tears were welling up and then rolling down his cheeks.
His face twisted with frustration and grief, but no matter how hard he tried, Marcus just couldn’t keep the tears from streaming uncontrollably down his face.
