It was ten o’clock at night, and the Larson Residence was lit up. Everyone was there. With Dwight on his deathbed, the family had gathered like never before, chatting in the living room.
When Marcus walked in, everyone in the living room was caught up in a heated debate about Larry.
Fiona was notoriously worried, and all her sons knew exactly how to keep her spirits up. They just agreed with whatever she said.
Bernard had never even considered making his son get engaged so young, but as long as it put a smile on his mother’s face and gave Dwight peace of mind in his final days, he’d go along with anything.
Larry was surrounded by uncles and aunts on all sides, and he felt like his head was about to explode.
Larry had explained himself a hundred times, but not a single person believed him.
Rachel and Gloria looked at him with stars in their eyes, and to his horror, they’d even scheduled his engagement photoshoot without asking.
For once, Fiona was unusually quiet. Usually, she couldn’t help but chime in, but now she just sat there, sensing that Marcus cared quite a bit about Edith.
And since nothing was set in stone yet, Fiona dared not say a word; she was terrified that if she said the wrong thing, Marcus might just storm off and disappear again.
Rachel piped up, “It’s been ages since the Larson family had something to celebrate. This time, we should make it a huge event.”
Gloria nodded enthusiastically. “Bluewater Villa needs to be booked half a year in advance. I’ll call right now and have them save us a spot. Let’s hold the engagement party there.”
Stella was stunned for a moment. Honestly, she had no clue what to even say.
Larry and Edith clearly weren’t a thing, but no matter how Stella tried to explain it, Rachel and Gloria just wouldn’t buy it.
If Stella kept arguing, it’d sound like she was against the whole wedding–for–good–luck thing, or maybe thought Edith wasn’t good enough. So, Stella simply stayed silent.
To Stella’s horror, Rachel and Gloria only got more and more outrageous with their ideas.
Stella shot a look at Fiona, whose face was stone–cold, lost in thought.
Stella finally felt a huge wave of relief and wondered, ‘As long as Fiona didn’t get involved, it won’t happen.’
Rachel grabbed Larry’s arm. “Larry, why don’t you just bring Ms. Lovett over for a simple meal tomorrow?”
“No need to trouble Larry with that.” Marcus’s voice rang out from the doorway.

He strode in, a chill in his tone. “I’ve already arranged it with Ms. Lovett. She’ll come by for dinner at our place after her competition tomorrow.”
Rachel was instantly stunned and wondered, ‘Wait, isn’t Ms. Lovett supposed to be Larry’s girlfriend? Why’s Marcus asking her instead?
‘And Marcus never used to care about anything, not even about the old folks. Since when did he give a damn about his nephew’s affairs?‘
Marcus, looking totally unfazed, said, “Ms. Lovett’s my friend, too.”
Basically, Marcus was telling everyone not to drag Edith and Larry into all this family gossip, since he was just as close to her himself.
But Gloria was still suspicious and wondered, ‘Larry and Edith sound like besties; he’s always calling her by her first name, all chummy and familiar.
‘But Marcus is so stiff, always calling her Ms. Lovett. That doesn’t sound like friends at all.‘
“Uncle Marcus and Edith are way tighter,” Larry said, getting to his feet with a resigned look. “Seriously, if you’ve got anything to ask, take it up with him.”
He dashed off as if his sanity depended on it. Any longer in that room, and those guys would probably come up with a hundred names for his future kids, right then and there.
Marcus stood in the living room, and the place that had just been buzzing instantly fell silent.
Rachel and Gloria exchanged a look. They didn’t know Marcus all that well, and there was no way they were going to joke around; if they got it wrong, Marcus would embarrass them on the spot.
So, they wisely kept quiet.
Fiona gave a warm smile. “Marcus, do you happen to know what Edith likes to eat? I’d like the kitchen to get everything ready ahead of time.”
Marcus frowned. Honestly, he had no clue. ‘What does she even like?‘ he wondered. He searched through Dodo’s memories and recalled a scene of the two having breakfast together–maybe she liked pies?
He replied, “Let’s have some pies.”
Fiona was speechless and wondered, ‘Pies are breakfast food. Is it really appropriate to serve those for dinner?‘
Still, since her son almost never bothered to answer seriously, Fiona wasn’t about to press the issue.
“Anything else besides pies?” she asked.
Marcus shrugged, the corner of his mouth twitching. “Whatever. Just make whatever we usually have.”
The three women shared a look; nobody knew Marcus better than they did. The guy was so icy and reserved, like he didn’t even know what he liked to eat himself.

And yet, he actually remembered Edith’s favorite breakfast. That was definitely not normal for him.
‘Wait a sec. We totally had it backwards from the beginning,‘ they wondered, ‘Edith is obviously Marcus’s girlfriend.‘
There was nothing married women loved more than some fresh gossip, and the three of them were practically buzzing with excitement.
After exchanging a few loaded glances, they unanimously decided to push Gloria out to be the spokesperson.
Gloria gathered her courage and asked, “So, Marcus, what’s really up between you and Ms. Lovett?”
Marcus looked completely unfazed, not a hint of irritation on his face. His tone was steady as ever: “We’re just friends.”
“Oh, okay then,” Gloria mumbled, instantly deflating.
Honestly, Gloria had no idea how to keep digging. Larry was so much easier; he’d let them ask whatever they wanted and never push back.
But Marcus always wore a cold face and an icy gaze. Even with a million questions burning inside, Gloria just couldn’t spit them out.
Fiona said, “Alright, it’s getting late. Everyone, go get some rest. We need to head to the hospital tomorrow.”
And just like that, the living room emptied out.
Marcus stood there, totally confused.
‘Wait? Weren’t we just talking about using a wedding to bring good luck? How come everyone’s grilling Larry and not me?‘ Marcus thought to himself, feeling a bit put out.
Marcus already had someone in mind. If the old lady really insisted on someone being the sacrificial lamb to bring the family luck, he wouldn’t mind throwing himself under the bus for it.
“Marcus, you should get some rest,” Fiona said before turning and heading back to her room.
Marcus felt a weird emptiness in his chest. He’d told the family he and Edith were friends, actually looking forward to all their questions and teasing, maybe even some juicy misunderstandings.
That way, he’d have a perfect excuse to get closer to her.
But instead, nobody bothered to ask anything. Everyone just let it go and moved on.
‘Seriously, does everyone think Larry’s a better match for Edith than me?‘ Marcus grumbled inwardly, feeling a little put out.
At 7:30 in the morning, Edith woke up bright and early, feeling totally energized.

She pulled on some comfy clothes, tossed her dress and heels into a bag, and left the hotel with Kerrie, heading straight for the competition venue.
There were three hundred participants who’d come to Bonrea for the preliminaries, all aged sixteen to
twenty.
If one were older than twenty or younger than sixteen, one’d have to join a different division or wait for another competition down the line.
Three hundred competitors squeezed into a single day, split across morning, afternoon, and evening sessions.
Each contestant only got a little more than a minute on stage–meaning most folks wouldn’t even finish playing an entire song before they got the boot.
Edith felt pretty calm about the whole thing, thinking to herself that there wasn’t much to stress over. She followed Kerrie backstage toward the makeup room.
Edith was getting her makeup done, while Kerrie went off to draw her contestant number.
With three hundred people competing, performing in the morning definitely had its perks–but one didn’t want to be too early, either. After all, the first person in a competition is usually at a disadvantage.
“Edith, you just stay here and line up for your makeup. I’ll go draw your number,” Kerrie said, getting ready to head out.
Suddenly, someone walked into the makeup room. “Excuse me, is there an Edith here?”
