Chapter 146

No Larson was a fool. Only the blind wouldn’t see that Marcus was head over heels for Edith. Still, no one dared to bring it up. If Marcus got embarrassed and started acting out, it’d just backfire on them.

Fiona looked genuinely delighted; she never would’ve guessed that the girl she had her eyes on for Larry would end up becoming Marcus’s future wife. Fiona thought, ‘Larry was more easygoing, and still young; he’d have no problem finding someone down the line.

‘But Marcus had always been my biggest worry. Now that he’d found a girl he truly liked, I could finally put my mind at ease.‘

Afraid Edith might feel awkward on her first visit, Fiona wouldn’t let go of her at dinner. “Honestly, girl, where did you get such a gorgeous face? Those brows, that nose, those eyes, absolutely captivating,” said Stella.

Edith answered right back. “Oh, I bet Auntie were a real beauty in your prime.”

“Oh, beauty?” Fiona let out a playful sigh. “I’m way past that stage. Just look at this old face, covered in wrinkles, everywhere!”

Edith chimed in, “I was lucky enough to get my hands on this anti–wrinkle pill; they say it works wonders. Just take it before you go to bed in a good mood, and you’ll be amazed by the results when you wake up.”

Edith gently took out the pill box and handed it over to Fiona with both hands. Fiona lifted the lid, revealing a single, pale pink pill about the size of a soybean. A delicate scent wafted up with a refreshing fragrance.

Rachel glanced at the box from all angles, puzzled. “Which brand is this? I’ve never seen an anti–wrinkle product like that in my life,” said Rachel.

Edith smoothly said, “One of my friends, whose great–grandmother was an imperial physician for the empress and concubines. Their family has a secret beauty formula, and this is their last pill. I helped her a lot, so she gave it to me as a reward.”

Edith made it all sound a bit mystical, just to keep anyone from doubting how powerful the pill might be. She also made sure to mention it was the only one left, so if anyone else wanted one, tough luck, it was already gone.

Gloria pulled a doubtful face and asked, “With no clear origin, is it really reliable?”

No sooner had Gloria spoken than she caught Marcus’s cold, warning stare. Gloria instantly switched gears. “Oh, right! If the empress used it, it would be the real deal,” said Gloria.

“It really is something special,” Fiona said. “I’ll try it out one night when I’m feeling good. Edith, thank you so much for such a precious gift. Now you’ve got me wondering, what on earth can I give you in return, sweetheart?”

Edith quickly shook her head and said, “No, really, you don’t have to get me anything.”

It was just good manners to bring something when visiting someone’s home, after all. Plus, Edith wanted things even between herself and Marcus, no debts hanging over them.

“This bracelet is a Larson family heirloom. I want you to have it,” Fiona said, slipping the green bangle from her wrist. “Don’t stress, it’s not some priceless treasure or anything, just take it, no need to feel pressured.”

Edith’s head just about exploded. ‘The Larson family’s heirloom bracelet, why on earth are they giving it to me?‘ thought Edith. She immediately threw Marcus a pleading look for help.

Marcus spoke calmly, “It’s from my mother, just accept it. It’s only a bracelet, no point in arguing over it.”

But Fiona thought Marcus was hinting that her gift was a bit meager. She quickly shot a subtle glance at the butler behind her.

Coincidentally, the Larson daughters–in–law noticed the look right away and wasted no time in slipping upstairs with whatever excuse they could muster.

Rachel couldn’t hold it any longer. “Freda, are we supposed to return the favor or what?” asked Rachel.

Freda was also quite upset. Freda thought, ‘I’d always assumed Edith had a soft spot for Larry. There was at least a fifty–fifty chance she’d end up as my daughter–in–law. Who would’ve guessed, daughter–in–law turned

into sister–in–law!

‘What’s more, Marcus was totally set on Edith; the possessiveness in his eyes was written all over his face. Besides, even the way Marcus looks at Larry carries a hint of hostility.‘

Freda said slowly, “We’re Marcus’s generation, but 12 years older; so really, Marcus and his future wife kind of count as our juniors. No need for any flashy return gifts. In Bonrea, when a girl first visits, we give a red envelope to welcome her.”

Gloria hesitated, looking uncertain. “But Marcus never actually called Edith his girlfriend, did he?” asked Gloria.

Rachel said, “Mom just gave her the family heirloom bracelet. How much clearer can it be? Edith’s young; she probably won’t even know what a red envelope’s for. As long as Marcus gets it, fine by me. I’ll put in 30k. What about you two?”

Freda nodded and said, “Sounds good, let’s each do 30 thousand dollars.”

With their plan settled, the three women left the room together.

Meanwhile, the butler brought over a red envelope, handing it to Fiona, who immediately passed it to Edith. “A bracelet’s nothing special, really, so let me give you a little red envelope instead. Go treat yourself to something nice, don’t be shy, okay?” said Fiona,

The envelope was pressed into her hand, and Edith instantly realized it wasn’t cash in there, but a card. ‘Even a red envelope can’t hold all this money; this must be over a six–figure sum. Edith thought.

“No, really, you don’t have to,” Edith said stubbornly. She barely had a chance to hand the envelope back before the three Mrs. Larsons came over, each offering up their own red envelope.

“Edith, this is just a little token of my affection. Go splurge on something you really like,” Freda said warmly.

“Here’s a small gift from me; seriously, get yourself anything you want,” Rachel said.

“And this is from me, for your studies. Grab yourself some books or study materials while you’re here in Bonrea,” Gloria chimed in gently.

Turns out, just like the first, every single envelope had a bank card tucked inside. Edith could only stare in mute disbelief.

Edith thought, I’d spent a couple hundred grand, but ended up with four bank cards; anyway, I was seriously winning here.‘

“Go ahead and take it,” Marcus said coolly. “It’s just a bit of spending money, really, it’s no big deal.”

Fiona nodded enthusiastically and said, “Look at you, you’re so thin! Take the cash and go treat yourself to something tasty, alright?”

Edith was speechless. ‘Who would need this much money just to buy some snacks?‘ Edith thought, feeling these envelopes practically burn in her hands.

Clutching all four envelopes, Edith looked sincerely at the Larsons and said, “Aunt Fiona, Sister Freda, Sister Rachel, Sister Gloria, I truly don’t need any money; I’m not lacking at all. I really can’t accept this. The bracelet is more than enough for me.”

Edith politely set all four envelopes back on the table. Once Edith got all earnest, the whole room went quiet; no one knew how to respond.

Mrs. Larson kept sending Marcus urgent looks, hoping he’d say something. Marcus just played it cool, acting like he hadn’t noticed a thing. He was even helpless when it came to dealing with this stubborn girl.

Luckily, just then, one of the Larson family’s servants came in quickly. Fiona jumped in to change the topic and asked, “What’s up? Why the rush?”

The servant blurted out, “The hospital just called, Mr. Larson is awake!”

Ever since Dwight’s health took a bad turn, he usually only woke up for a couple of hours in the evening, around seven or eight. But today, he woke up in the middle of the day.

Fiona’s face lit up with joy, and she said, “We’re heading to the hospital right now!”

Fiona immediately shot Edith an apologetic look and said, “Edith, I’m sorry I didn’t treat you well today. I’ll make it up to you tomorrow, okay? Don’t forget to come!”

Edith was speechless. Edith thought, ‘No way am I coming back again, seriously!
