Dwight woke up; this was a huge event for the Larsons, a day of real celebration. The whole family packed up, ready to head to the hospital.
Edith paused for a moment and then said politely, “I’ll go to check on Dwight as well.”
Fiona’s eyes sparkled with joy, and she said, “Just call him Uncle. If that old man sees you coming, I bet he’ll be over the moon.”
Edith didn’t really bother wondering why Dwight would be so happy to see her. All her attention was on figuring out how to sneak the Vitality–Nourishing Pill to Dwight without anyone else from the Larson family noticing.
The whole group got into their cars and set off toward the military hospital.
Dwight’s hospital room was quite spacious; even with the whole group bustling in, it didn’t feel crowded at all. He lay weakly on the bed, cloudy eyes open, slowly sweeping his gaze over everyone’s faces.
“Old man, you’re finally awake!” Fiona said with delight. “Here’s our special guest for today, Marcus’s friend, Edith. Take a look, isn’t this girl beautiful?”
Dwight focused on Edith, and a weak smile appeared on his pale face. “Marcus has never had any friends; you’re the very first. Thank you for being his friend,” said Dwight.
Marcus pressed his lips together, thinking Dwight’s words made him some kind of pitiful loner.
Marcus glanced at Edith, who stepped forward with a sweet, girlish smile on her stunning face. “Hello, Uncle. I’m Edith. Dodo is a really great guy, and I’m happy to be his friend,” said Edith.
‘This man wouldn’t let her call him Mr. Larson, or Uncle Marcus, and honestly, saying just Marcus felt just too awkward for her. In front of his family, though, calling him by his nickname seemed natural,‘ Edith thought. Then, Edith simply went with it.
But the second Edith said Dodo, the room fell quiet. Every head turned to Marcus. In the Larson family, Dodo was a taboo; it was Marcus’s orphanage name. To Marcus, it brought back those bleak, dark days he’d run away and vanished.
Marcus’s face did darken, but not because the nickname was taboo, The moment Edith said it, the other personality in him seemed roused, running wild in his mind; and he fought desperately to suppress it.
Suddenly, Dwight, lying on the bed, began to cough violently. A spurt of blood stained the pristine white sheets; it was a shocking and terrifying sight.
Just a moment ago, Fiona had been overjoyed, but now she completely fell apart, tears streaming down her cheeks. “Dwight, please, don’t do this to me. Wake up; come on. Wake up!” shouted Fiona.
In the end, Dwight slumped back, losing consciousness.
Bernard looked at the doctor just walked in while asking, “He seemed totally fine when he woke up; Why’s he suddenly coughing up blood?”

The doctor could only sigh and said, “Looks like he’s having that final surge before. Well, you know. If he comes again, it might be time for everyone to get ready to say goodbye.”
Fiona broke down in sobs and fainted right into the arms of her daughters–in–law. The entire room was plunged into a suffocating silence.
Half a month ago, the doctors had already warned that Dwight’s body was failing, his organs shutting down, and that he might not last a month. Yet no one expected the end to hit so fast. Nobody was ready for this.
Edith stood among the crowd of sobbing relatives, feeling like she didn’t belong there at all.
Edith quietly made her way to the other side of Dwight’s bed, hoping to do something without drawing attention, only to hear the Larson family’s twelve–year–old granddaughter ask innocently, “Aunt Edith, what are you doing?” She wasn’t questioning or blaming Edith; just curious.
Edith felt a bit awkward, but kept her composure and grabbed a tissue. “Just wiping the blood from Uncle’s mouth,” answered Edith.
“Sweetheart, this isn’t work for a young lady like you,” Rachel said, taking the tissue from Edith. She then gently wiped the blood.
Edith stood off to the side, head throbbing with frustration. She obviously had the means to save Dwight, yet with the whole family watching, she just couldn’t see a way to step in.
Marcus kept his gaze fixed on Edith. Oddly enough, he could pick up on her sense of urgency. Marcus thought, ‘It was obvious she was desperate to do something.
‘She wasn’t part of the Larson family; this was practically the first time she’d met my dad. The man’s life was hanging by a thread, and logically, it had nothing to do with her. But somehow, she’d ended up pressing close to the bedside.‘
Marcus narrowed his eyes. He remembered that candy of mysterious origin; it had helped him regain control instantly. And that odd chocolate; ever since he tasted it, his two personalities had started to connect. ‘Who knows what other miracles she’s hiding?‘ thought Marcus.
With that in mind, Marcus spoke calmly. “Brother Bernard, could you take everyone out? Edith and I will stay.”
Bernard frowned, thinking, ‘Shouldn’t the doctor be here right now for one last shot at saving him?‘
But Freda seemed to sense something deeper. Freda thought, ‘Maybe Marcus wants to confirm his feelings for Edith before his father passes. With Dwight hovering at death’s door, Edith would likely agree to anything Marcus asked right now!
Then, Freda said, “Let’s all head out and give Marcus a chance to have a private talk with Dwight.”
Everyone nodded and quietly filed out, closing the door softly behind them. Edith wasn’t feeling relieved at all. Instead, she kept a sharp eye on Marcus, thinking the man might sense something.
Marcus held her gaze, speaking softly, “My split personality is really severe; even the world’s top doctors tried to help, and everyone said I’d never recover.”

“But after I had that candy, switching personalities didn’t hurt like before. Then, about half a month ago, I accidentally ate the chocolate you left on the table, and suddenly, the wall between my two personalities just vanished.
Edith was caught off guard. She never realized he’d picked up on every little detail. Her mind spun in panic, frantically searching for an excuse.
Marcus continued, “I did some digging. After you turned twelve, you never touched the piano again, and back then you were only at Grade 3. There’s no way a regular person could improve so much in just one month.”
Warning bells blared in Edith’s mind. ‘He actually investigated me… and so thoroughly; even down to things like the piano?‘ Edith thought, her heart started to race. ‘Does he know even more about me?‘
But Edith gradually composed herself. She looked at Marcus, said with a calm tone, “Mr. Larson, why don’t you just say what you want?”
Marcus’s brows knit together, and he thought, ‘Seriously? One second she’s calling me “Dodo,” and the next it’s all formal with “Mr. Larson.” I never liked being called “Dodo” but, honestly, “Mr. Larson” just rubbed me the wrong way even more.’
Marcus forced down his annoyance, meeting Edith’s eyes seriously as he spoke, every word measured, “You know my deepest secret, and I know yours. If you cover for me, I’ll do the same for you. So, Edith, I’m asking you. Please, save my father.”
