Dwight was feeling much better, but he still wasn’t allowed to leave the hospital just yet.
Bernard and Larry were staying at the hospital overnight to look after him.
They persuaded Fiona to come home that evening. She had a good appetite and ate a plate of pasta.
Right after the dishes had been cleared away, a servant came to report. “Mrs. and Ms. Brodrick are here.”
Apart from those very close to the Larson family, no outsiders knew about Dwight’s illness. The Larsons had been turning away visitors during this time, so guests were few and far between.
Fiona wondered why the Brodricks had come so late at night, but she told the maid to show them in.
“Fiona, you look like you’ve lost weight,” Kamari said in surprise. “Did something happen?”
Fiona had a typically plump face, a sign of living a charming life. But in the past two weeks, she’d lost ten pounds dramatically. Her cheeks were noticeably hollow. The wrinkles on her face were more pronounced. She suddenly looked a decade older.
“I’m just worried about the kids,” Fiona said. “Larry is taking the SAT soon. I always think about how to cater to his needs. So I end up losing weight.
“The doctor says losing weight is a good thing. Maybe I’ll get to stick around a few more years.”
Kamari watched Fiona–her voice sounded strong and energetic, and her face looked bright and lively. It seemed nothing major had happened to the Larson family.
She smiled and said, “Phoebe and I were out shopping today. We ran into Marcus. I thought he’d gone to Sunspire–when did he get back to Bonrea?”
Fiona frowned.
‘Seriously? They especially dropped by just because they happened to see Marcus on the street? That’s way too much of a fuss over nothing, Fiona thought.
“Marcus never stays put,” she said. “One minute he’s in Sunspire, the next in Bonrea. It’s not surprising to see him anywhere.”
“Right,” Kamari said, quickly steering the conversation. “But I saw a girl with Marcus…”
Her words carried a probing undertone.
Fiona’s gaze immediately shifted to Phoebe, who was a few months younger than Marcus. Back then, Kamari had even joked about arranging an engagement between the two. When the kids were little, the Brodrick family used to bring it up often.
Later, Marcus went missing for years. When he was finally located and brought home, his personality had changed drastically, and the Brodricks never brought up the engagement again.
Kamari’s evident interest in the girl with Marcus clearly indicated a desire to bring up the former agreement.
Fiona smiled and said, “That girl has done me a huge favor. She’s an honored guest of our family. I asked Marcus to look after her. Marcus has never cared about any girl before, but he went shopping with Edith. I’m truly relieved.”

She didn’t spell everything out, but the meaning behind her words was evident.

Kamari certainly got the hidden message. She gave up on mentioning it. Bringing it up would be totally pointless.
But Phoebe, clueless as ever, cut in, “Mrs. Larson, do you know that girl is from Sunspire? I’ve never even heard of that place. She’s just some country bumpkin. How could she be worthy of becoming Marcus’s girl? I-”
Fiona shot her a cold, icy glare. “Phoebe, regardless of how Marcus thinks of Edith, she’s our family’s distinguished guest..
“If she and Marcus like each other, she’ll marry into our family. If not, she’ll be our goddaughter. Either way, our family’s affairs are none of your business, young lady.”
Phoebe’s expression changed. She felt embarrassed and humiliated, and her expression was full of disbelief.
She had thought Marcus was seeing some low–class country girl behind his family’s back. But the Larson family was fully aware and even supportive of Marcus’s relationship with the girl.
‘What about me? What does this make me look like?‘ Phoebe thought.
“Fiona, I’m truly sorry. Phoebe was out of line,” Kamari said, standing up with an apologetic expression. “We’ve disturbed you enough today. We’ll take our leave now.”
Phoebe didn’t want to go, but Kamari dragged her out.
Once outside the house, Kamari’s face darkened. “Why were you so desperate? Don’t disgrace yourself like that.”
Phoebe felt wronged. “Grandma, I’ve always liked Marcus. I-
“You like him, but have you ever put in any effort to approach him?” Kamari said coldly. “You didn’t seize your chances. You can’t blame anyone else.”
‘I’ve tried, alright?‘ Phoebe thought, on the verge of tears. Every time she saw Marcus, she’d take the initiative to talk to him. But Marcus never even glanced at her. As a girl, she was unwilling to always be the one to make the first move.
Kamari couldn’t bear to look at her upset face any longer. She dragged Phoebe away.
Fiona sat in the living room, watching the Brodricks‘ car drive away. She shook her head.
Marcus and Phoebe weren’t compatible. Phoebe couldn’t keep Marcus in line or get him to open up. But Edith was different, Edith didn’t have to do a thing. Just standing there was enough to make Marcus unable to take his eyes off her.
Now that Marcus had someone he cared about, he finally lost that cold, unfeeling edge he used to have. When a person had someone or something truly important to them, they would truly appreciate the meaning of life.
Fiona was in a wonderful mood.
She spotted the wrinkle–removing pill that Edith had left on the table. Edith had told her to take it when she was in a good mood.
It was a wonderful day today. Dwight’s condition had improved, and Marcus had found someone he cared about. There would never be a day better than today.
After taking a shower, Fiona lay on the bed and popped the pill into her mouth. It melted instantly, and a faint, fresh scent filled her mouth. Before long, Fiona drifted off into a deep sleep.
The next morning, Fiona had forgotten all about taking the pill the night before until a maid came in to help her fix her
hair.

“Mrs. Larson, y–your crow’s feet are all gone!” the maid blurted out, stammering in disbelief, her eyes wide open.
Everyone had watched Fiona lose weight rapidly these past few weeks, and her wrinkles had only increased.
But now, just one night after Dwight’s condition improved, Fiona’s wrinkles had vanished. It was just so incredible!
Fiona quickly picked up a mirror and examined her face, her mouth agape in astonishment.
Not only were her crow’s feet gone, but her forehead lines, frown lines, nasolabial folds, and neck wrinkles had all noticeably faded and lightened. It was as if she were looking at her sixty–year–old self.
She’d used so many expensive skincare products and gone to the beauty salon every week, but none of that had stopped her from aging.
She’d gotten used to her wrinkles growing deeper each day. Then she woke up one morning, and they were gone.
“Edith didn’t lie to me,” Fiona whispered, touching her face in a daze, eager to have someone take her to find Edith right
away.
‘Edith gave me something so rare and magical. I’ve gotta repay her big time. But what should I give her? Cash is way too tacky.
“Jewelry wouldn’t appeal to a young girl, and clothes feel way too cheap. How about gifting her a company? The Larson family had plenty of them, Fiona mused.
As Fiona was pondering, her phone rang. It was a call from Joselyn Cornell.
“Meet up at the usual place in an hour,” Joselyn’s voice came through the line. “Then we’ll go shopping, just like we did when we were young. And don’t bring kids.
“Back when we used to hang out, you always brought men or kids along. Weren’t you just trying to rub it in?”
