Dithelle Properties had two shareholdersEdith and Marcus. And Kane was their one allaround assistant.

These days, Kane was constantly swamped. Finding office space, buying furniture, hiring support staffall the minor tasks ended up on his plate.

When he first worked as Marcus’s assistant, his job involved negotiating deals and handling major clients. Now, he was little more than a glorified errand runner. The work was just endlessly easy choresthere was always something to do, and he rarely caught a break.

But when he saw Marcus sitting at the desk with a faint smile, Kane felt it was all worth it.

He pushed open the glass door just as Edith stepped in behind him.

The moment Marcus saw her, his eyes brightened.

For over a week, he’d only heard about Edith through Kane’s updates. It had been too long since he’d seen her.

All the suppressed longing he’d held back came rushing out the instant she appeared.

But as soon as her eyes met his, he quickly reined it in.

Marcus stood up and walked over. Is this your first time seeing the office too?

Edith nodded. Between school and everything else, she hadn’t found time to visit.

Kane, ever perceptive, spoke up. I’ll go get some water. Mr. Larson, Ms. Lovett, please feel free to look around.

With that, he made a discreet exit, leaving Edith and Marcus alone in the spacious office.

Ordinarily, Edith wouldn’t have given it a second thought, but this time, the silence felt unmistakably

awkward.

She cleared her throat. Let’s go take a look. She led the way inside, with Marcus following close behind.

The office was rented temporarilyjust over a thousand square feet. Since the company was still new, they’d only hired three people so fara receptionist, an HR manager, and a customer service representative.

It only took them a few minutes to see the whole place,

They stepped into a small office and sat down. Both were tall, and their long legs made the space feel cramped almost immediately.

Marcus felt frustrated with himself. After all this time apart, why am I so tonguetied now?he thought to

himself.

Telling her he missed her was out of the questionthat was something only Dodo would do. He decided to stick to business.

He settled into his chair. There’s more than 6 million in the company account. I think we should reinvest all of it into the next projectno dividends for now.

I agree,Edith said. But 6 million isn’t nearly enough to buy land and build on it.”

It might cover a small plot, but development, construction, and marketing would cost far more. Six million wouldn’t get them far.

Marcus looked at her and said earnestly, I can invest more.”

Edith sighed softly. I know you have the money. But I don’t want to always depend on you.

Letting him invest 1.6 million initially had been a practical decision. But if she kept leaning on him, she worried that she’d never build something that was truly hers.

With experience from her previous life and a sharp business sense gifted by the system, she was determined to make it on her own.

Just then, Kane walked in, carrying a map of Sunspire’s latest real estate projects from the past couple of

years.

He laid out the map and pointed. For just over six million, we can snag this plot. We’ll fund construction with a bank loan, and start preselling units to generate cash flow early on.”

Edith stared at that plot, but her gut just screamed that it was wrongshe had no idea where that feeling came from, but she trusted it.

Her gaze swept across the map. All of a sudden, she pointed at another spot. What about this place?

Kane glanced over. It’s an abandoned factory on the west edge of Sunspire. It was built over a decade ago, and used to be governmentowned. But tech moved on, the equipment became obsolete, and the place was left to rot. Nobody’s touched that land in ages.

But Edith’s gut instinct told her she had to buy that plot.

She guessed it was the System’s reward kicking in, letting her zero in on which spots had real investment value.

The area was over 2 million square feetnot exactly prime real estate in this business.

But for a startup like hers, with total assets of just over 6 million, a plot of over two million square feet was undeniably hugefar more than she could handle,

Still, since the plot had hidden value, she was determined to snag at least a chunk of it, no matter what.

She turned to Kane and said, Kane, I want to buy this land.”

Kane looked at her, totally thrown. Ms. Lovett, that’s just an abandoned factory. Even the government gave up on it. What do you want with that?

Kane, just trust me,Edith said seriously. We’ve got over 9.5 million dollars on hand. At suburban land

prices, that should be enough to secure at least half of it.

Kane rubbed his temples, hesitating. Marcus had made it clear that Kane was supposed to follow Edith’s lead. That meant Kane had no right to say no.

Just then, Kane felt a chill run down his spinea cold stare landed right on him. He whipped around and found Marcus shooting daggers at him, obviously annoyed.

He froze, suddenly aware that he’d been so caught up talking with Edith that he’d completely forgotten Marcus was still in the room.

Wait, is Mr. Larson actually jealous of me? Oh, come on, how did I end up in the hot seat for this?Kane grumbled silently.

Marcus’s lips tightened into a straight line. Edith always called him Mr. Larson-so formal and distant- while she casually called Kane by his first name.

If she’d just call me by my first name, even once, he thought, I’d probably do anything for her without a second thought.

So, Mr. Larson, what’s your take on this?Edith asked, tossing the question his way.

Marcus felt the annoyance flare up inside, but he kept it under wraps. He pressed his lips into a thin line and replied, You’re the big boss here. We’ll do it your way.”

Edith could hear the edge in his voice. Dropping that kind of cash on a chunk of land is no small deal. To him, it probably sounds like I’m just playing around with serious money, she thought.

She quickly clarified, We’ll keep some working capital for the company and only spend 5 million dollars on the landlet’s just get as much as we can for that.”

Marcus met her gaze. If you’ve set your eye on this plot, then let’s go all in and buy as much of it as we can. We’ll use the company assets as collateral for a bank loanthat should cover at least twothirds of the factory.

He turned to Kane and added, Kane, you’re on this one.”

Kane nodded immediately. I’ll contact the bank right away.”

He turned to head out, but stepping outside, he realized just how late it wasalready pitch black and probably close to nine. Great, the banks have been shut for ages, he thought to himself.

He glanced back and saw Edith and Marcus sitting across from each other in the conference room, who looked like they were made for each other. Not wanting to kill the mood or be a third wheel, Kane quietly slipped away.

Kane said you just arrived in Sunspire. Did you get a chance to eat yet?Edith asked.

Marcus had actually grabbed a snack on the plane, but he shook his head.

Edith got to her feet. Then let’s just get something to eat and chat while we do,” she said, ready to lead the

way.

She pulled out her phone and checked for restaurants nearby. There was a barbecue spot close by. She turned to ask, Are you up for some barbecue?

Marcus had never really eaten barbecue before, but he nodded obediently. I’m fine with trying it.

So the two of them headed out together, walking side by side to the barbecue joint.
