The fire was finally out. But smoke still drifted down the street.
Marcus reached up and touched his head, shocked to find that a patch of hair at the front had actually been singed off. He thought, ‘Without hair like this, I must look terrible. What if Edith starts to mind?‘
“Come on, let’s go to the barbershop and get you a new haircut,” Edith said with a smile, leading the way.
Marcus followed behind her.
The barbershop wasn’t far, and since it was late, there were hardly any customers inside.
Edith told the barber, “Could you trim the burnt bits in the front and just give him a crew cut?”
After saying that, she realized she might be being a bit too bossy, so she turned to Marcus and asked, “Have you ever had a crew cut before?”
Marcus shook his head. He’d always had bangs as a kid. The hair hanging over his forehead gave him a sense of safety, letting him hide his feelings from the world.
But now that the front was completely burned off, there was nothing left to hide behind. A crew cut was all he could do now.
The barber got to work, and in less than twenty minutes, the haircut was done.
Edith was honestly surprised. Crew cuts usually didn’t suit most guys, which was why hardly anyone got them anymore. But somehow, Marcus managed to pull off even the simplest style and still looked ridiculously good.
The cut actually gave him this tough, grown–up vibe–way more manly than before.
In Edith’s mind, Marcus had always been like a little brother to her, just like Dodo.
But now, with this new look, Marcus seemed mature and confident–it was almost impossible to picture him as the same boyish Marcus she used to put in the same category as Dodo.
Marcus gazed into the mirror, but he wasn’t really checking himself out–he was looking at Edith’s reflection behind him. The awestruck sparkle in her eyes when she saw his new look didn’t escape him.
Seeing her reaction, Marcus felt his confidence surge. Suddenly, he was starting to like this haircut—a lot more than he’d expected. He stood up and dropped 300 dollars on the counter,
The barber said, “Sir, a crew cut’s only 5 bucks.”
Marcus said, “I’m really satisfied, Consider the rest a thank–you bonus.”
As Marcus and Edith walked out of the barbershop, both of them were feeling pretty great.
Marcus found himself loving this haircut–mostly because it clearly made Edith smile.

And for Edith, it seemed like the nightmares haunting her from her previous life had finally been chased
away.
They walked side by side down the bustling street, horns honking all around and cars streaming past. Overhead, the city’s neon lights outshone the faint stars, making the night sky seem almost washed out.
Marcus said softly, “Hey, why don’t we go check out that old abandoned factory together tomorrow?”
The factory was out in the suburbs. Marcus thought, ‘If we kill some time and stay out there till evening, maybe we can lie back and watch the stars come out.
‘The city lights always drown out the stars, but out there in the open, the night sky will be bright and full. Edith’s gonna love that.‘
Edith nodded. Since they were investing every cent of the company’s assets into this abandoned factory, a personal inspection was necessary.
She turned to Marcus and asked, “Were you the one who arranged for Karen to get sent to prison?”
Marcus admitted. He said, “I had someone dig into what happened six years ago. There wasn’t enough solid evidence to nail Karen outright, so I found another angle.
“Two grand stolen? Around here, nobody goes easy on that–she’ll be locked up for a long time. You’ll never have to worry about her messing up your life again.”
Edith looked at him and said, “Thank you. How could I ever thank you enough for this?”
Marcus looked away, awkward. He said, “Seriously, you don’t have to thank me. If you’re smiling and happy every day, that’s all the thanks I’ll ever need.”
Edith smiled softly.
If one truly cared about someone, all one wanted was for them to be happy every single day.
Edith knew Marcus really cared about her. Before, she used to see his feelings as a burden–something she wished she could escape. But tonight, she finally understood.
The fire had haunted her from her previous life into this one; it was always lingering in the back of her mind. She wondered if Marcus would end up being someone she could never let go of, even when she moved on to another life.
In three years, Marcus would be gone, and the worst part was that Edith already knew it. She refused to carry that regret, so she made a decision.
She blurted out, “I’ve decided to apply to Bonrea University. Do you think I can get in?”
Marcus froze. He’d always wanted to ask where she planned to go for college, but his own situation made him feel like he had no business interfering with her future.
Plus, with her company just getting off the ground in Sunspire, he figured she probably wouldn’t want to leave her family or the business behind.

He’d even toyed with the idea of moving Nexus Group’s office to Sunspire one day. He thought, ‘Wherever she is, that’s where I want to be.‘
But now Edith had just announced she wanted to attend Bonrea University–the best in the country and practically next door to the Larson family.
A surge of pure joy swept through Marcus, almost overwhelming. He couldn’t help but wonder if she did this because of him.
Edith continued, “But my grades might not be good enough to get in. Bonrea University’s always been my dream. I’ll do everything I can to make it happen.”
Marcus felt a pang of disappointment. He thought, ‘So that’s all it is. It’s just because she wants to go to Bonrea University. Not because I’m in Bonrea. But then again, as long as she gets in, that is all that matters!
Marcus smiled and said, “From now on, you should head home earlier–especially while you’re prepping for the SAT. And let me and Kane check the land tomorrow, alright? You just focus on your studies.”
Edith grinned and said, “I should still go see it for myself–just to put my mind at ease. What if I overlook something important?”
As they talked, they walked right up to the entrance of the neighborhood.
Marcus didn’t have anywhere else to stay for now, so he was crashing at Larry’s place.
Marcus and Edith walked into the neighborhood together.
Marcus had planned to walk Edith all the way home, but it was already so late. And he thought, ‘If any of the Lovett family elders catch us, they’ll jump to conclusions and assume Edith’s dating someone too young.
‘If they decide she can’t see me again, it’ll be a real mess.
So Marcus stopped at the corner, watching Edith make her way back. Once she disappeared from view, he finally turned and headed for the Larson Residence.
It was already eleven at night–pretty late. The Lovett Manor was dead quiet.
Edith headed up to the third floor. As she passed Joseph’s room, she peeked inside. Joseph was fast asleep, but he’d left the light on. She quietly slipped in and turned it off.
She moved on to another room, about to open the door when she heard Zachary on the phone.
Zachary said, “Go ahead and beg me. I just wanna see how bad you want it. If you’re really that desperate, I might even take you under my wing and let you ride my coattails.
“Deal? Then starting tomorrow, swing by my place–I’ll personally coach you through it.”
Edith almost burst out laughing. She thought, ‘He must be kidding. He can barely keep his own grades afloat, and he’s got the guts to call himself a tutor?‘
Once Zachary hung up, Edith pushed the door open with a smirk and teased, “So, who’s the poor soul blind

Zachary wiped the sweat from his brow and said, “Melanie saw how much I’ve improved, and now she just keeps pestering me–I couldn’t shake her off even if I tried.
“But once she sees how hardcore my study grind is, she’s probably gonna run for the hills.”
Edith remembered Melanie–such a little firecracker, so lively and bright. She never would’ve pegged her as the type to bomb her classes.
But considering Melanie clearly had a crush on Zachary, Edith did worry a bit that all this extra study time together might turn into some high school romance.
Then again, she thought, ‘Judging by Zachary’s clueless face, he hasn’t caught on at all. If I try to step in, he’d probably just rebel for the hell of it.
‘Besides, it looks like Zachary is out to one–up Melanie anyway. And with a girl like her around, his drive to study would probably skyrocket.‘
In the end, Edith smirked and said, “Fine, let Melanie be your study buddy. But just so you know–if she outshines you, don’t blame me when I roast you for it.”
Zachary jutted out his chin and said, “Come on, there’s no way she’s beating me. I’ll crush her in every subject.”
