Chapter 37
Edith set her pen aside and looked over at Karen.
Karen’s radiant, familiar smile instantly brought back memories of Edith’s previous life. Back then, the party in question had taken place after Edith’s SATs, serving as her 18th birthday party.
That night had left her reputation in tatters. It had forced her into a marriage with that jerk, costing her the best years of her youth.
Putting on a bright grin, Edith said, “Great. This is a chance for me to reconnect with old friends.”
Karen’s malicious intentions were carefully concealed behind her pleasant smile. “Your father and I plan to host your party at the Harmonia Hotel. Do you have any suggestions?”
The words “Harmonia Hotel” echoed in Edith’s mind, stirring up painful memories. That was the place where she’d lost both her dignity and reputation. Still, Edith responded sweetly, “I’m happy with whatever you and Dad decide, Karen.”
Choosing to ignore Karen after that, Edith shifted her attention to helping Zachary practice his pronunciation.
Though Zachary couldn’t stand studying Engloria, with Vincent keeping a close watch, he had no choice but to behave as if he were fully committed.
After an hour of stalling, Zachary finally mastered all ten words. When it came to his math homework, Edith simplified it to a fourth- grade level and had both Zachary and Joseph work on it together–whoever finished first would get to go to bed.
Determined not to lose face in front of his younger brother, Zachary gave it his all, carefully working through every single step.
“All right, bedtime,” Edith said, clapping her hands. She gathered her study materials and made her way upstairs.
As Edith passed the second–floor bedroom, Hallie’s furious voice reached her ears. “Mom, why are you throwing a party for that bitch? She doesn’t deserve all the attention. I’m not just going to let this happen!”
Karen’s voice dropped to a whisper. “Sweetheart, I’m doing all this for you. The higher Edith rises, the harder she’ll fall. Believe me- with me on your side, Edith will never outshine you.”
Hallie’s eyes sparkled with hope. “So, Mom, you’re planning to knock her down a peg at this party?”
Karen sighed and lowered her voice. “I hate getting you involved in this, but I may need your help. Here’s what we’ll do…”
Edith overheard the entire conversation. A cold, knowing smile appeared

Morning came, sunlight filling the sky. Edith went next door to wake Zachary.

“Oh? I thought I was at the top of your ‘most hated‘ list.” Edith laughed, messing up his hair. “Such a try–hard. Seriously, what does she

Edith’s playful sabotage left Zachary frustrated, but he didn’t have time to fix his hair. He left for school with his hair a mess.
After seeing Zachary off, Edith had the driver take her to Sunspire High. Outside her classroom, she caught Hallie’s sugary voice. “This Sunday–end of the month–my family’s throwing a huge party. Hope y’all can make it.”

“Oh wow, a Lovett family party? That’s going to be legendary,” Noreen exclaimed.
“Thanks for the invite, Hallie. I’ll have to hunt down my best outfit,” another girl gushed.
“The Lovetts are basically Sunspire royalty–pretty much all the wealthy families will show up, right?” added a third.
Excited, the group gathered close, chatting animatedly about the upcoming bash.
Noreen rolled her eyes at Edith. “Hallie, it’s your family’s party. You get to invite people.”
Hallie put on her sweetest smile. “Oh, but the party’s for Edith. It’s welcoming her back to Sunspire. On the big day, I’ll totally stay out of the spotlight–she’s the star.”
‘Fine. If that’s the game, I’ll play,‘ Edith thought. She flashed a bright smile. “That’s not it at all. In fact, I’ll bring printed invitations tomorrow–and invite everyone in our class myself.”
Edith grinned. “Who said you need fancy clothes? Wear whatever you want–no ball gowns required. I’ll meet everyone right at the hotel door.”
Most students had only heard stories about parties through the class.

When the bell rang, Class One’s buzz faded. Edith quietly shifted back to exam prep, grinding through practice papers.
