That evening, Edith headed to the study room and saw Larry looking wiped.
He was slumped over the table, grumbling, “Uncle Marcus practically killed me yesterday. Seriously, he’s the worst. He runs his own company and just decided I’m his new personal assistant.”
Edith shrugged. “So how’d he just vanish the other night?”
Larry hesitated. Marcus’s health problem was one of the Larson family’s biggest secrets. Avoiding her eyes, he mumbled, “He just got into Sunspire and got lost in the dark somehow.”
Edith caught his hesitation instantly–a total lie. She dropped it. Opening her notebook, she said, “Hit two new problem types last night. Help me with them?”

The evening study session flew by. Edith felt totally worth it, leaving her with a rare, deep calm.
After packing her books and slinging her backpack over her shoulder, she headed out. The Lovett family’s car waited on a side street just left of the gate.
As she walked over, a guy in a black suit suddenly stepped in front of her. “Ms. Lovett, my boss wants to see you,” he said flatly.
Edith glanced up, taking in his icy stare and jacked build. He blocked her path, making it obvious he’d stop her if she tried to bolt.
She flashed a mocking smile. “So I’m just supposed to see him ’cause your boss says so? It’s late. I’ve got homework.” She stepped forward
to leave.

But Kane moved fast, cutting her off. “Guess I’ll have to get rough, then,” he said, reaching for her shoulder.
In a flash, Edith ducked low and threw Kane hard to the ground with a sharp hip toss.
For Kane, an eight–year military vet who’d been in way worse fights, hitting the ground was nothing. He bounced right back up, eyeing Edith with new respect. Not many people could flip him that easily, especially not some girl.
Edith dusted off her hands. “Tell your boss to come himself or meet me at the Lovett Manor. Pulling this crap? Real classy.” She shot a frosty look at the black car nearby and walked off.

Kane didn’t chase her. He just watched Edith get in her car and leave. Then he crossed the street to the black car parked nearby. “Mr. Larson, I screwed up. I’ll take the heat.” He bowed.
Inside, a man in a dark suit sat in the back. Everything about him screamed power–deep–set eyes, sharp charcoal suit, gleaming black shoes–like he was part of the shadows. Tapping his fingers, he asked, “Why’d she refuse?”
Kane answered straight
up, “Ms.

said she had homework.”
Marcus let out a low chuckle, a sly smile spreading. “She’s got a point. It isn’t exactly classy to force a schoolgirl to come here. She wants me to meet her at the Lovett Manor. So that’s exactly what we’ll do.”
Kane hesitated, confused. “Mr.
son, what do y
you mean?”
Marcus rubbed his fingers, lost in thought. The security footage flashed in his mind–that night on the street, Edith handing him those candies. He simply spent ten minutes asleep by her side, and his second personality had vanished completely.
On the last weekend in March, sunlight spilled into the room and roused Edith from sleep. She turned over and got out of bed, savoring her first truly relaxed morning since her coming back. Well–rested and full of energy, she felt ready for anything.
She decided to skip studying today and visit Shaun at the special school instead.

Thinking about her little brother brought a surge of warmth to her heart.
Without wasting time, she slipped into some comfortable clothes, grabbed her Englorian dictionary, and made her way downstairs. As she descended, she spotted Karen and Hallie in the living room, trying on fancy dresses.
“These are the hottest gowns this season, and these two are truly special–there are only two of each in the entire country. Hallie, start with the white princess dress. It’ll look amazing on you,” Karen urged.
Karen smiled. “Then let’s take both. You can wear the white dress for the first part of the party tomorrow, and change into the pink one for the second.”
you want.”
Edith glanced at the rack, realizing she was only getting Hallie’s rejects. Her voice turned icy. “No thanks. I’m not wearing a dress to the party.”
Karen’s face darkened. “No way! You’re the star tomorrow night, Edith. Not wearing a gown won’t fly. What about this purple one? Take it upstairs and try it on.”
Edith stepped back. “I’ve got things to do. We’ll talk tonight when I’m back.” Without waiting for a reply, she turned and left the villa. Hallie scoffed. “Unbelievable. Who does she think she is, spitting on your kindness like that?”
Karen hung the purple dress back up, her voice cold. “She will wear this dress.” She told Dallas to stash it somewhere safe. Then she went back to helping Hallie with outfits, pulling out all her jewelry for Hallie to try.
The Lovetts had thrown plenty of parties before, but Karen had never been this obsessed.
This was the first event where both her daughter and Melinda’s would appear together in high society. Karen was determined to make Hallie outshine Edith. She only had one shot at this–she couldn’t afford any slip–ups.
As Karen and Hallie focused on dresses downstairs, a shadowed figure appeared on a third–floor bedroom balcony. He quietly opened the window, causing the curtains to stir with the breeze. Without hesitation, he drew the curtains back and stepped inside as if he belonged there.

The room was uncomfortably small. For Marcus, all six–foot–one of him, there was barely space to breathe.
‘Is this really Edith’s room? Why so tiny? Even the Larson family’s illegitimate kids get bigger rooms–way bigger than this–once they come home,’ he thought.
Marcus edged his way inside, and immediately his gaze landed on a black iron box with gold trim sitting on the vanity. It looked just like the candy box from the security footage. Without a second thought, he grabbed it and popped it open.
