Chapter 50
Edith slowly emerged in the hospital corridor. She had overheard every word of the discussion between the Crawford family, the Lovett family, and the Reed family in the ward just now.
The way things were unfolding was exactly the same as in her previous life. In her previous life, she had been married off to Henry without her knowledge.
She pondered, ‘This time, Vincent’s concessions in business would likely lead the Reed family to agree to the marriage alliance. But what if Isabella and Lucas found out that Karen was the mastermind behind all of this?
‘Even if they don’t care much about Noreen, they would never send her into a den of wolves.’
Edith knocked on the ward door. Isabella, thinking it was a nurse, told her to come in.
Edith walked in, took off her baseball cap, and revealed an aloof, strikingly beautiful face.
Isabella recognized Edith at a glance–Melinda’s daughter, the center of attention at the Lovett family’s party today.
Edith said, “Mrs. Reed, Mr. Reed, sorry to bother you. You’re not seriously thinking of marrying your daughter into the Crawford family, are you?”
Isabella thought, ‘Of course I don’t want that. But after what happened at today’s party, Noreen’s reputation is in tatters. Even though she was forced and nothing actually happened, people in their circle would never see it that way.
‘Rumors are terrifying–they could twist the truth into anything. At this point, an engagement seems like the only way to save Noreen’s
name.‘
Edith continued, “Mrs. Reed, if you really marry your daughter to Henry, aren’t you just playing right into Karen’s hands?”
Isabella narrowed her eyes and asked, “What do you mean?”
Edith said calmly, “This whole scheme today the one who got hurt?”

Lucas’s heart skipped a beat. After Noreen’s accident, he had rushed to the hospital in a hurry, barely stopping to think. Now, as he connected the dots, he realized everything.
Noreen was the knife in Karen’s hand. Karen failed to hurt Edith; in the end, it was Noreen who got hurt and ended up in a hospital bed.
Lucas’s face was clouded with anger as he snapped, “My daughter got hurt, and you had a hand in stirring things up. What makes you think I’d ever take your side?”
Edith had shown up at the hospital all by herself, looking every bit like she was here to strike a deal. Lucas could already tell what she was after.
He thought, ‘The Reed family isn’t some tool for the Lovett family’s power games.‘
Edith
gave a soft smile. She wouldn’t have come here all by herself unless she had something that could really convince the Reed family. Just as she was about to speak, there was a sudden knock at the door.
Lucas looked wary and called out, “Who is it?”
Edith tucked a strand of hair behind her ear. She thought, ‘Lucas’s attitude is obvious–he has no intention of walking right into Karen’s trap, but he isn’t about to just help me go up against Karen either.
‘Businessmen always put profit first. Unless I give him my word and make a real promise, he probably won’t be willing to help me.
While Edith was still deep in thought, the door to the ward suddenly swung open. When she saw who walked in, her eyelid twitched. She thought, Why is he here at the hospital? Did he follow me all the way here?
‘Wait, this is Noreen’s room. Maybe he’s actually here for Isabella or Lucas. She tried to make herself as inconspicuous as possible.
But Kane walked straight over to Edith. He said, “Edith, this is some information my boss asked me to give you. Please have a look.”

Edith looked a bit surprised. She asked, “For me?”
Kane, with a respectful expression, said, “You’ll understand once you see it.”
Edith opened the file with a suspicious look. After reading just a few lines, she suddenly smiled, the coldness on her face melting away like snow under the sun–her smile dazzling and radiant.
The information was Henry’s dirty secrets.
In her previous life, after being forced to marry into the Crawford family, she had tried to make the marriage work with Henry. But it took less than a month for her to realize that Henry was anything but normal.
Henry always acted gently and kindly in front of others, but behind closed doors, he was downright abusive and got a kick out of messing around with women.
He went around calling himself a distant cousin of the Lovett family, barely squeezing into the circle of rich heirs. All he ever did was party, drink, and get mixed up in every kind of vice one could think of.
And among his messes, there was even a girl who gave birth to his illegitimate daughter. But the girl was just a nightclub girl, and the Crawford family never had any intention of recognizing that child.
At this point, the baby was only about two months old.
She thought, ‘No matter what the so–called boss is after, at least for now, he is helping me out. With this, I can win the Reed family over in no time.‘
He walked to the corner outside the ward, bowed his head, and reported, “Mr. Larson, I’ve already handed the file to Edith. When do you want me to deliver this other file?”
Just then, Harridan came walking straight toward Marcus. When she first saw Marcus, she thought he was some big celebrity who had just stepped out of a TV screen. She stood there, staring at him in a daze until he disappeared around the corner.
Then she slapped her thigh, her face twisted with regret. She thought, ‘I should’ve just asked for that guy’s number. A man that handsome would be perfect for my granddaughter.
‘And he isn’t just good–looking–he probably has money too. I mean, what poor guy walks around with a bodyguard?”
Harridan stood there kicking herself for a few more minutes before finally making her way toward Noreen’s hospital room.
Meanwhile, inside the ward, the air was icy.
Lucas had just finished reading the file on Henry, and his face was livid, his eyes practically blazing with fury.
If it hadn’t been for Edith’s sudden visit, he really might have gone through with marrying his daughter off. But now, he swore he would stand forever against the Crawford family.
He thought, ‘If they want to scheme against me, let’s see if they really have what it takes.
Edith, catching on to Lucas’s thoughts, gave a faint smile and said, “Attempted rape starts at a minimum of three years in prison–if it’s serious, the sentence can go all the way up to ten.”

Lucas studied Edith, thinking that she didn’t seem like some ordinary teenager at all–she carried herself more like a grown–up. Noreen was the same age, but she was so naïve in the way she handled things.
He thought, ‘If Noreen had even a tenth of the cunning Edith has, she never would’ve landed herself in such a mess today.
“I’ll be looking forward to your good news, Mr. Reed,” Edith said with a faint, confident smile. Just as she was about to walk out, Harridan suddenly stormed into the room with the force of a hurricane.
Harridan snapped, “You nasty little wretch. Trying to stir up trouble between the Crawford family and the Reed family, are you? Who the hell raised you? Let me teach a brat like you some manners.”
