Chapter 7
Vincent was about to have the driver get the car ready when Edith called out to him.

She said softly, “Dad, Karen said you’ve been working overtime and traveling a lot lately. You must be exhausted. Let me give you a shoulder massage.”
She stepped behind him and gave his shoulders a quick, half–hearted rub. If it weren’t for the system’s reward, she never would’ve done it.
System: [Mission complete. A proper heiress must master basic shoulder massage techniques. Reward unlocked: Intro to Massage Skills.]
Edith felt speechless. She couldn’t understand why heiresses needed to learn how to give massages. In her previous life, she‘ had seen plenty of rich ladies–none of them had this particular skill.
You’ve got a pretty professional touch,” Vincent said approvingly. “Did someone teach you?”
System: [Congrats! You received a genuine compliment. A proper heiress must have soft, delicate skin. Reward unlocked: Skin Smoothness +1.]
Edith glanced down and noticed her slightly rough hands really had softened a bit. She thought, ‘So rewards could come even from something this small? This system is truly something‘
Once the massage was over, Vincent took Edith out to Sunspire High School.
Not long after they left, Karen came home dragging a nearly hysterical Hallie, who looked like she’d been crying all the way back.
Hallie no longer looked like a bald–headed mess. She was wearing a wig–long, straight, with blunt bangs. Her eyes were red from crying, which gave her a fragile, pitiful look.
“Hallie, stop sulking with your dad, okay?” Karen said gently. “Go to his study and apologize properly. No more tantrums.”

wed. “Which school?”
spare High School. The same one Miss Hallie attends,” Dallas replied.
Halle’s eyes widened. “How could Dad do this? He really put that bitch in Sunspire High School? No way! I won’t let this happen?
Karen narrowed her eyes. “Your father went there himself. If he made that move, Edith is most likely enrolled already. Get ready I’ll take you to school
Hallie stomped her foot hard. “No, I’m not going to the same school as her. She’s just some stupid country girl. Why does she get to go to my school? Mom, do something. Kick her out, please? I can’t stand her anymore…
“Hallie Karen raised her voice. I told you, just hold out for three more months. After that, everything in the Lovett family will be yours?
As soon as she said that, someone came down the stairs. It was Joseph, with a backpack slung over his shoulder.
Karen quickly masked her expression and asked gently, Joseph, it’s not even eight yet. Why didn’t you sleep a little longer?”

Joseph glanced at his watch. “Class starts in twenty minutes. If I sleep now, I’ll be late.”
Hallie snapped, “Aren’t you late every day anyway?”
Joseph didn’t answer. He kept walking, opened the car door, and got in.
It was true–he was always late, always left early, and skipped school all the time. He’d never cared what teachers or classmates thought.
He only went today because he wanted to know what the homework was–just in case Edith asked him.
The thought annoyed him. He didn’t understand why he cared so much about what Edith thought, or why he got up early just to be ready if she had questions.

At 8:20 a.m., the students at Sunspire High School had just finished their first class. Vincent walked in with Edith and headed straight to the assistant principal’s office.
“Mr. Lovett, pleasure to meet you.” The assistant principal greeted him warmly. “Everything’s ready, just like you asked. All that’s left is your signature on the transfer papers, and Edith’s officially a student here. I placed her in Class One. That okay with you?”
Sunspire High had a special class for top–performing students, known as the Honors Class. These kids were the ones bound for schools like Bonrea University.
Class One wasn’t quite as elite as the Honors Class, but it was still a group of strong students. Vincent had no objections- getting Edith in with these kids was already a win.
Mr. Humphrey, why don’t you give Edith a quick assessment?” the assistant principal said. “Mr. Lovett, how about a cup of coffee in my office?”
Since both daughters had gotten in through connections, Vincent knew exactly how these things worked. He followed the
sistant principal without a second thought.
Dan
homeroom teacher of Class One, wasn’t thrilled.
played second fiddle to the Honors kids, and now they were dumping in another student with special idn’t help but worry about the average GPA.
He handed Edith a science test, clearly annoyed. “You’ve got one hour.”
Edith was left alone in a corner to take the test.
Meanwhile, a few teachers had gathered nearby, whispering among themselves.
“Lovett Group’s one of the top companies in Sunspire. I heard Mr. Lovett promised to build the school a new wing two weeks ago. That’s how he got a spot
“Hallie Lovett in Class One is also his daughter, right? She’s pretty smart, so the new girl might not be too bad.”
“I just looked at this one’s transcript. It’s a mess. Mr. Humphrey’s in for a nightmare”
The more they talked, the angrier Dan got. He finally got up and walked over to Edith.
One glance at her test, and his face darkened.

He’d picked basic science questions–stuff ninth graders could do in their sleep.
Edith had answered every one. But they were all wrong.
Dan’s expression was grim. “You didn’t get a single one right?”
Edith shrank in her seat and didn’t dare look up.
“If you don’t know how to answer, then just stop.” Dan reached to yank the paper away.
Edith slapped her hand down on it. She didn’t really want to keep going either, but she had no choice.

The system had given her a mission: finish the test, no matter what. She figured the answers didn’t have to be right–as long as she finished, the task would be complete.
The system sighed. It had no idea how it got stuck with a Host who loved finding loopholes in every rule.
Edith looked up at Dan with a serious face. “If I try harder, maybe I’ll get one right? Mr. Humphrey, just give me a little more time, okay?”
Seeing the sincerity in her eyes, Dan slowly let go of the paper.
In his thirty–plus years of teaching, it was the first time he’d seen that kind of hunger for knowledge in a student’s eyes.
He started to believe Edith might actually be a good kid–just someone who’d never had the chance to study properly, which was why she’d fallen behind.
System: [Congrats! You’ve earned genuine praise from someone else. A qualified heiress must have strong knowledge reserves. Reward unlocked: Comprehension +1.]
Edith was stunned.
Dar had only taken one look at her test and already felt impressed. That made her wonder if she somehow got everything
