Chapter 81

Edith walked into the classroom.

The room was buzzing.

What happened last night caused a stir at school.

“Hallie did get expelled!” someone exclaimed in disbelief.

“I just saw her dad taking her to apologize in the principal’s office. Wonder if the principal will let her get away with it,” another student chimed in.

“Mr. Larson told the school to expel Hallio. There’s no way they’d go against the Larson family,” someone else said.

“Even if the Larson family hadn’t said anything, the school would still have to expel Hallie. She’s a total troublemaker, How could someone like her be a student at Sunspire High School?”

“Quiet down!” The teacher, Dan, walked in and slapped his hand on the desk with a stern look.

The students, who had been chatting away, immediately fell silent, not daring to say another word.

“The midterm exams are just a few days away. Today we’re going to have a practice test,” Dan said on the stage, his voice firm. “Cathy, give out the papers.”

Cathy walked forward and handed the papers to the group leaders. Soon, the papers were distributed to everyone.

The first test was Literature and writing. Edith used to excel at it. The multiple choice questions at the beginning focused on basic knowledge, followed by three reading comprehension passages and an essay prompt.-

With all those extra years of experience, she soon understood the passage. The essay question was simple. She had to describe the most unforgettable thing. Edith had a lot of those kinds of things.

The second test was math. Larry had been helping her with Algebra lately, while she’d been reviewing Geometry. The last question in every section was always the hardest, but the rest were pretty easy.

Edith thought, ‘As long as I get the basics down and know how to draw inferences, I can finally reach the right answer.’

The third test was Engloria. In the previous life, Edith was a good language learner. After being transported back, she used all of her free time to memorize vocabulary and listen to the radio.

It helped her improve her reading and listening skills and expand her vocabulary. So the test wasn’t hard for her at all.

The last test was science. Edith was not good at it. She’d spent the least time on it, so she flunked them as expected.

Edith thought, ‘People may let you down, but hard work will never fail you. You get back exactly what you put into it.

‘I need to spend much more time studying science from now on.‘

After a full day of exams, Edith felt lightheaded and muddled.

She thought, ‘I’m still not working hard enough. If I were, after a full day of exams, I would be as calm and composed as Larry.”

When evening self–study time rolled around, Edith was getting ready to review lessons with Larry in the study room.

Larry was already waiting outside her classroom, his expression grim. He said in a low voice, “I heard the principal is giving Hallie a chance to make amends. If she manages to get into the top fifty, she can stay at Sunspire High School.”

Edith smiled. “For the past three years, she’s always been number one in our class, but fifty–first in our year. It is no different this time.”

Larry sighed. “Someone in our class took a ten day leave today and will miss next week’s exam.

Otherwise, he wouldn’t have made a point to come and tell Edith about it.

Edith sneered and thought, ‘That’s exactly what Karen would do.‘

“The second and third top students in your class are Cathy and James, so they’re your best bet now. Didn’t you three start a study group? Count me in Bring them to the study room, and I’ll tell you what the focus is,” said Larry.

Cathy and James followed along, still a bit dazed.

These days, they’d been mooching off Larry’s notes, but they never thought that one day they’d sit in the same study room as Larry

“Your answer is correct, but your solution is too complicated. It’s easy to lose points that way,” Larry said, pointing at Cathy’s textbook “Try to do it this way. You can skip at least three steps.”

“Oh, got it!” Cathy responded.

Petrified, Cathy wrote down the solution Larry mentioned in her notebook, but actually, she had no idea how to use it to solve the problem.

Looking at Larry’s handsome face, Cathy couldn’t concentrate at all.

She couldn’t help but admire Edith. She thought, ‘Edith stayed with Larry every single day and has improved so much in studies. She is truly impressive.

She thought, ‘I haven’t started working on the questions yet. Why am I getting praised already? This is so confusing.

Larry turned to James. “For the last question, you have to use some critical thinking. Applying the formula won’t help at all.”

Larry broke it down step by step, and James suddenly had an epiphany.

In just about five minutes, the problem that had stumped James for months was solved.

Sure, the teacher had explained it before, but never this clearly or simply. Every time he tried to figure it out on his own, he’d just hit a wall. And the next time he saw a similar problem, he’d mess it up again

Now he finally understood why Larry was always the top student, while he could never get past third place in his class.

Nighttime was for studying. At the same time, Hallie was busy studying too.
