Edith went to the bathroom to wash her face. As the icy water splashed over her skin, she finally felt like she was awake
again.
She told herself, ‘Those things all belonged to a previous life. They haven’t happened in this one, and they never will.
Once she’d settled down, she was about to drift off to sleep when she caught the sound of quiet, tiptoeing footsteps outside her door. Frowning, she walked over and pulled the door open.
It was midnight–not exactly late, but definitely not early. Showing up at this hour, Zachary couldn’t help feeling a bit guilty.
He was holding his shoes in one hand, barefoot as he crept upstairs, doing his best not to make a sound, hoping Edith
wouldn’t wake up.
As the door swung open, Zachary stood frozen, rooted to the spot, barely daring to breathe. When he saw it was Joseph, he let out a big sigh of relief and asked, “Why are you still up?”
Joseph waved the workbook in his hand and said, “I’m working on my homework. I’ll go to bed when I’m done.”
Zachary shot him a look and whispered, “Where’s Edith?”
Just then, Edith’s room door swung open.
Zachary stammered, “E–Edith.” He gulped nervously. When he met her icy stare, he felt a murderous aura radiating from her. He thought, ‘I am done for.‘ He racked his brain, desperately trying to come up with an excuse.
But Edith simply looked away, her gaze resting coldly on Joseph.
Joseph squared his shoulders. He thought, ‘Compared to Zachary, I’m way more well–behaved. Staying up late to grind through homework–Edith is totally gonna praise me for this.‘
“Get some sleep,” Edith said casually. With that, she turned and went back to her room, collapsing onto her bed. But no matter how hard she tried, sleep just wouldn’t come.
The dream had dragged up all those tangled memories from her previous life–the mess with her brothers. Cedric had never said a single word to her, and Shaun, with his autism, had never truly spent time with her.
Honestly, it was Zachary and Joseph who’d hurt her the most. Yet here she was, even after getting a second chance at life, still busting her ass to fix their destinies.
Edith thought, ‘Man, being their big sister is seriously brutal. If they ever choose to trust Hallie over me, I might as well act like they never existed! With that thought, she finally drifted off to sleep.
Outside the door, Zachary muttered, “What’s her deal? Edith actually didn’t chew me out this time?” Not getting yelled at for coming home this late left him a little unsettled.
Joseph said, “Because you’re basically hopeless, man. I just powered through five pages of this workbook–Edith would’ve totally given me props, but with you acting up again, she’s so ticked off she’s gone full silent mode.”

The problems in this workbook were exactly his thing–Joseph couldn’t help but want to pull an all–nighter, to blaze through and finish every single page.
Zachary sneered, “She’s so over the top. She makes me do homework every damn day, and I actually hand it in. So what if I go out with friends for a birthday? Why does she have to micromanage everything?”
He kicked open his bedroom door and flopped onto his bed.
Joseph poked his head into the room and said, “Zachary, you’re a real tough guy. I’m rooting for you to overthrow Edith’s rule and save me. I’m depending on you.”
With that, he quietly shut Zachary’s door, wearing a look of hidden pride–like a mastermind with his achievements kept under wraps. He thought, ‘The more Zachary rebels, the more I will look like a little angel next to him.’
Night slipped by without a sound.
Edith hadn’t slept well, so she was up at the crack of dawn. With sunrise barely brushing the sky, it was only six in the morning. She pulled on her tracksuit, hoping a run would shake off the exhaustion and clear her mind.
As she passed Zachary’s room, she noticed the door was wide open, and the bed was empty.
She thought, ‘He’s so scared of getting chewed out that he actually woke up early just to hide at school. Guess he doesn’t realize he can’t run forever.‘
The luxury villa community had its own exclusive jogging path.
Edith jogged along, reviewing vocabulary words in her head. The crisp late–spring breeze brushed against her face, making her feel fully awake.
As she was running, she suddenly tripped and stumbled. She glanced down and saw that her shoe had basically fallen apart–the upper had separated from the sole, leaving it totally unwearable.
She’d planned to buy new sneakers the day she regenerated, but one thing after another kept her from the mall, and the plan kept getting pushed back.
She bent down, picked up the broken shoe, and tossed it into a nearby trash can.
To the southeast of the jogging path lay a lake, its surface sparkling under the early morning light. Marcus was seated in a pavilion by the lakeside.
“Mr. Larson, that looks like Ms. Lovett over there,” Kane said.
Marcus turned his head and caught sight of Edith.
Edith looked as fresh as the morning–radiating energy and life. Her hair was pulled up into a high ponytail. She wore a long white tee and casual pants, but she only had one shoe on.
Kane pointed out, “Looks like her shoes fell apart. Mr. Larson, want me to go grab her a fresh pair?”
“No need.” Marcus spat out the words, then looked away, his tone ice–cold.

Edith had already seen him at his lowest–right now, the last thing he wanted was any further involvement with her. Besides, the thought of hearing her say “Dodo” one more time was enough to make his skin crawl.
Marcus rose to his feet and said, “Let’s go to the office.”
“Yes, sir,” Kane replied.
Kane glanced over at Edith and thought, ‘Ms. Lovett doesn’t seem the least bit delicate–even with no shoes on, she just starts running barefoot like it is nothing.
‘It isn’t even summer yet, and here she is, barefoot on the ground. Isn’t she worried about catching a chill?
‘She had spent the whole night looking after Mr. Larson just two days ago. He really shouldn’t be this stingy–at the very least, he could offer her a pair of shoes.‘
But Kane also knew Marcus absolutely hated anyone bringing up the other personality. So he didn’t say anything else.
Suddenly, Marcus said, “Send her a pair of shoes. Any women’s running shoes will do.”
Kane was surprised by Marcus’s sudden decision, but he nodded quickly. He said, “I’ll get right on it.”
Just as Kane started off, Marcus suddenly called out, “Hold up. Never mind.” He’d just noticed someone new on the
jogging path–it was Larry.
Larry said a few words to Edith, then kicked off his own shoes and basically forced her to wear them. The two of them
wandered off together, still chatting away.
For a split second, Kane could practically sense that Marcus was in a seriously sour mood.

He quickly switched the topic. He said, “Mr. Stone mentioned he’d like to check out the famous bar street here. Why don’t we meet up with him at one of the bars?”
Mike was a major client of their company, and this trip to Sunspire was all about investing in a big project–that was actually the other reason Marcus had come to the city.
Marcus nodded and said, “Let’s go.”
With that, Kane and Marcus left.
The sun was creeping up, kicking off another day of school life.
Zachary sat dully at his desk, yawning every couple of seconds. He’d gone to bed way too late last night and had to drag himself out of bed at the crack of dawn this morning.
All he wanted right now was to crash back under the covers for another hour.
Suddenly, one of his friends, Blake, said, “Zachary, we’re hitting the bar again tonight. I’ve got four or five girls lined up- they only agreed to come because they heard you’d be there. Don’t bail on me, man.”
Zachary replied, “Not in the mood.” He thought, ‘If Edith finds out, she is gonna lose it and probably break my legs.‘

Blake said, “Just come for half an hour, man. If you don’t show, those girls are never gonna talk to me again.”
Zachary said, “Alright. I’ll sit for half an hour and then I’m out.”
