Reborn, She's Back for Revenge novel Chapter 92

Night draped the world in darkness, with only the moon casting its silver glow.

Marcus strode into the room. Dressed in a sleek black suit, he carried a commanding aura that seemed to squeeze the already tiny space, making it feel even more suffocating.

Edith found it almost funny. When Dodo was around, the room never felt cramped. Yet the moment Marcus appeared, the same body seemed to swell, taller and colder, radiating an untouchable restraint that swallowed all the air.

Marcus asked, Do you really not know why I’m here? His voice was cold, carrying a sharp edge that sliced right through the silence.

Edith couldn’t wrap her mind around how that same voice could have sounded so soft and childlike. But now wasn’t the time to dwell on it. She said, Mr. Larson, if you have something to say, just say it.

Marcus stopped right in front of her and said, Your brother went to the bar to look into me.

Edith’s heart sank. She thought, I’d warned Zachary again and again to forget the bar, but he had gone behind my back and started digging. How dare he?

If Zachary ever finds out Dodo is Marcus, Marcus will want him silencedwhatever it takes. Yet instead of going straight for Zachary, Marcus came to me first, which means there’s still room to talk.

She let out a slow breath and said, Mr. Larson, rest assured. I’ll take care of this, and your secret will stay between the three of us. It’ll never see the light of day.

Marcus raised his hand and tossed three bank cards onto the table. He said, Only the dead know how to keep a secret. But I’ll give you one chance.

Edith couldn’t help but twitch her lips slightly. She thought, So I should feel lucky he’s giving me a chance? Honestly, even if he hadn’t come to warn me, I’d never have spilled his secrets.

Besides, Zachary was only poking around to see if Marcus was faking itnot to expose him.

Edith eyed the three bank cards, annoyance rising. She couldn’t stand being spoken to as if she ought to feel grateful for crumbs, as if they were doing her a favor.

She curled her lips into a faint, mocking smile and said, If I suddenly tossed these cards to my brothers, they’d just get more suspicious about you. Mr. Larson, honestly, you’d be better off vanishing from my life.

In time, my brothers won’t even remember your namehell, I won’t remember a thing about you, either. Believe me, it’s better for all of us.

Marcus caught the subtext in her words. She just wanted Dodo to stay out of her life for good. She wanted nothing more to do with him. She wanted to forget him.

Funnythat was what he’d always told himself he wanted, tooyet his chest suddenly tightened.

He said, Next time I ever show up, don’t hesitatejust have someone kick me out.

Edith nodded and said, Dealbut don’t blame me for being impolite afterward, alright?

A sudden knock sounded, followed by Karen’s voice, asking, Edith, may I come in?

Edith heard the doorknob rattlingKaren was already trying to let herself in. Edith let out a silent sigh of reliefthank God she’d locked the door earlier. She replied calmly, Karen, is there something you need?

As she spoke, Marcus strode over to the balcony and was ready to pull off a thirdfloor jump. But he had just pushed open the balcony window when he spotted a couple of servants down on the lawn, busy washing cars.

He thought, If I go flying out the window right now, they’re totally going to think I’m some cat burglar!’

Karen said, Edith, I wanted to get your opinion on something. Can you open the door? Let’s talk in person.

Edith also heard the sound of cars being washed downstairs. She realized that there was no way Marcus could make his escape now. She replied in a calm voice, I’m working on my homework right now. It’s not really a convenient time.

Karen replied, What a coincidence. That’s just what I wanted to discussyour studies. Edith, are you still shutting me out because you’re holding a grudge?

Maybe I really did overlook your feelings before, and for that, I’m sorry. Can’t we just let bygones be bygones and get along from now on?

Edith could picture it perfectly: outside the door, Karen was staging her usual act, with Vincent as the ideal audience. By the curtain fall, he’d be completely taken in all over again.

Edith frowned and said, Wait. I’m going to grab a jacket. She hurried over to the balcony and whispered, Mr. Larson, sorry, but you’ll have to squeeze behind the curtains for a moment.

Marcus’s expression darkened. He grumbled inwardly, Seriously? She really sees me as the kind of guy who’d hide behind

a curtain? He stood his ground for a moment, refusing to move.

But Edith was freakishly strongbefore Marcus could/even process what was happening, she had already shoved him

behind the curtains.

Edith then muttered, Nope, this curtain’s way too seethrough. You’re not hiding behind that. Not wasting a second, she grabbed Marcus and marched him straight over to the closet. She yanked the door open and bundled him inside before he could even protest.

She found herself suddenly grateful for her minimalist wardrobethe closet was basically empty, so stashing a grown man in there was no problem at all. She then closed the closet door.

Marcus was completely taken aback. He couldn’t believe he just got pushed into a closet by Edith. He’d been resisting the whole time, but somehow she had managed to shove him right into the closet with ridiculous strength.

He thought, What made her think I’d just obediently stay hidden in here? This is humiliating.

For as long as he’d lived, he’d never been forced into anythingexcept when it came to that other personality. Every other time, he was always in control.

Marcus pushed the closet door open just a crackonly to feel something drop down from above and land right on his arm.

Chapter 92

Through that narrow sliver of light, he glanced down and saw a woman’s bra.

Marcus’s eyes went wide in disbelief, and he shook his arm hard, trying to fling the thing off as fast as possible. But the closet was so cramped that instead of getting rid of it, the bra just swung around and hooked onto his shoulder.

He turned his head slightlyand was immediately hit by a faint, floral scent. His face flushed bright red, as if he’d just been tossed into a pot of boiling water.

Marcus thought, Edith, that wicked girl. How could she shove me into this cramped closet with her bra?He wanted to get out, but he saw Karen walk into the room.

He hesitated and thought, If I step out now, how do I explain myself? They’ll probably decide I’m some secret fling hiding in the closet. No way I’m letting the Lovett family drag my name through the mud.

Marcus drew a shaky breath and stayed perfectly still. God help him if another bra or pair of underwear landed on him- then he’d have nowhere to hide his face.

Meanwhile, Edith was kicking herself for what she’d just done. She groaned inwardly, Was I out of my mind? Did I seriously shove Mr. Larson into the closet? I should’ve barred Karen at the doorwhat was I even thinking, making such a dumb, reckless move?

Did I actually mix Mr. Larson up with Dodo for a second there?

But it was far too late for regrets. Without letting her gaze drift toward the closet, Edith kept her face calm as Karen stepped inside. She asked, So, what did you want to talk about?
