Edith pulled her hand back, her face cold and distant. She said, I have my own mother. I’m not interested in calling anyone else mom. If you have something to say, just say it. If not, please leave. I need to study.

Her unyielding attitude made Karen’s eyelids twitch. Still, put on her best lovingmother smile and said, You and Zachary are at a really critical stage right now. I was thinking of hiring a tutor for each of youhow does that sound?

And even though Joseph’s only in the fourth grade, his grades are just too bad. We should find a teacher to keep an eye on his homework every day, so things will be easier for you.

Edith had already planned to hire a tutor for Zachary anyway. With the SSAT looming, she figured a middleschool teacher systematically reviewing everything with him was his only shot at raising his grades in the next couple of months.

Still, Edith doubted any teacher Karen handpicked would do Zachary more good than harm.

Edith pulled off a polite smile and said, I’ll take some time to talk to Zachary’s homeroom teacher. The teacher knows exactly how he’s doing and can recommend the best tutor for him, so you really don’t need to trouble yourself, Karen.

Karen’s smile threatened to slip, but she forced it to stay warm. She said, Isn’t that a bit much for you?

Edith replied, Taking care of my brother is nothing to me. I’m used to it.She then glanced at her watch and said, I really need to get back to my homework. Please leave, Karen.

Karen really didn’t want to keep talking to Edith any longer. No matter what she said, Edith just shut her down. She couldn’t play the caring mother even if she wanted to.

She let out a long sigh, putting on a wounded expression as she left the room.

Edith slammed the door shut behind Karen.

At the same time, the closet door creaked open and Marcus stepped out, his face so dark it looked like thunder. Behind him, a heap of clothes had spilled across the floor, completing the chaos.

Marcus lowered his head, catching sight of a dress he knew all too wellthe same one Edith had worn the night she played piano at the gala.

He glanced at the closet; despite its size, only four or five garments hung inside, two of them formal dresses Kane had selected for her on his orders.

He thought, Seriously? She’s the mighty heiress of the Lovett family, and she’s broke? Where does she get the nerve to refuse the card I gave her?

Edith noticed Marcus’s deepening scowl and followed his gaze.

Two dresses hung in the closet. The green one had been delivered to her by Kane for the Lovett family partybrandnew and never worn. The other had been chosen by the stylist for the school performance.

Chapter 93

Edith walked over and took the green dress out. She said, I heard this dress was designed by a famous Eoliadie designer and is worth 300 thousand dollars. I haven’t even touched it.

I’ve been meaning to give it back to you. Tonight’s as good a time as any.

Marcus’s expression turned pitchblack, as if someone had just dumped a bucket of ink over his head. Edith’s move really made it look like he’d shown up just to snatch back a gift he’d given away.

He enunciated each word with chilling precision, Let me say it one more timeif you don’t want it, just toss it.

Edith stopped abruptly, her hand lingering midair as the atmosphere thickened with tension. She thought, Honestly, with the way Marcus is looking at me, I feel like he might actually lose it and strangle me right here.

Dodo is just so much cuter. He’s always soft and cuddlynever gives off those hungry, about to eat me alivevibes.

Edith coughed and said, Sorry, Mr. Larson. I honestly didn’t mean for you to end up hiding in the closet. Hope you won’t hold it against me.

At last, a little color returned to Marcus’s facehe didn’t look quite so furious anymore.

He flicked a chilly glance at the bank card on the desk and said, If you won’t take the card, I’ll have to send someone to pay your precious little brothers a visit.

Inside, he thought, Seriously, not one decent new outfit in that closet. Take the cash and go buy something to wearwhy keep refusing my money?

Marcus finished speaking and turned toward the balcony without another word.

The servant who’d been washing the car downstairs had already left. Without hesitation, Marcus vaulted over the railing- his figure vanished into the yard in a blink.

Edith quickly swept the three bank cards off the desk and tucked them away. She thought, If taking his money buys a bit of trust, so be it. Once Marcus gets better, I’ll just give it all back. But will he ever really get better?

She remembered that in her previous life, Marcus was doomed to die in an accident three years from now.

Edith rubbed her temples, feeling annoyed with herself. She thought, Why am I even wasting brainpower on when

someone irrelevant bites the dust? It’s not my problem.

Meanwhile, Marcus strolled to the curb, pulled open the car door, and got in.

Kane sniffed curiously and said, Weird. Mr. Larson, you seem to have some kind of scent on you.

Marcus caught a faint trace of perfume on his shoulderEdith’s scent had settled there without him realizing.

He’d always been obsessive about cleanlinessanything with an odd or unfamiliar smell would never be tolerated. But now, the idea of getting rid of this piece of clothing didn’t even cross his mind.

The image of that pink bra in the closet flashed through Marcus’s mind. In twenty years of life, it was the first time he’d ever laid eyes on a woman’s intimate wear.

Suddenly, Kane exclaimed, Mr. Larson, are you blushing? His voice cracked with disbelief, like he’d just stumbled on a

secret treasure.

Marcus was the definition of coldhis face was normally nothing but icy indifference. Now, though, a faint flush rose in his cheeks, lending his sharp features startling life.

You’re imagining things,Marcus said, his voice icy. He then leaned back in his seat and asked, So, how’s it going?

Kane’s expression turned serious as he reported, The candy Ms. Lovett has on hand contains trace amounts of radioactive elementsthe potential effect on humans is unknown.

I checked all of her recent purchases, but couldn’t track down where she got it. Still, Dr. Barrett managed to recreate the

candy as a sample for you to see.He then handed over a clear glass jar filled with brightly colored candies.

Marcus picked one up and brought it to his noseit smelled no different than any ordinary piece of candy. He said, Next

time I have an episode, I’ll give it a shot.

Kane said, Dr. Barrett said those trace elements might cause permanent damage to your body. I’m really not sure this is a good idea.

Marcus shot back, If that candy was really poisonous, I’d already be dead. My episodes are getting more frequent. I can’t

let the other personality take over for this long.

The meds he used before took twelve hours to work. But this candy got him back to normal in just thirty minutes. He was more than willing to use ithe hated the feeling of life slipping out of his control.

The Lovett Manor wasn’t far from the Larson Residence. Kane hit the gas, and soon they were pulling up to the gates of the

Larson Residence.

As soon as Marcus stepped into the hall, another car pulled up outside. It was Stella and Larry returning.

It was Saturday, and Stella had taken Larry to the Merrinwick residence for a visit. They’d stayed for dinner before heading

home.

Stella wasn’t the type to kick someone when they were down. She genuinely wanted the Merrinwick family to settle in Sunspire as quickly as possible.

As the Larson representative in Sunspire, Stella figured her visit to the Merrinwicks would make it clear to the whole city that the Larsons and Merrinwicks were old friendssomething that would make life much easier for the Merrinwicks

there.

Marcus called out, Stella.

Only then did Stella notice Marcus sitting there in the living room.

Since moving in, Marcus had never shown Stella the slightest courtesy, but then again, he barely acknowledged Fiona or Dwight either. As his sisterinlaw, Stella figured she could hardly take offense at his manners.
