“What did you say?” Stella stared at him in shock.

Marcus’s voice remained calm. “You heard me right. I hope this can be settled by tomorrow morning. If it’s inconvenient for you, I’ll have Kane handle it.”

Kane wasn’t from Sunspire, so he wouldn’t be able to get it done as efficiently. That was why Marcus asked Stella. Still, if Stella wasn’t willing, Marcus wasn’t going to force her.

“Of course, that’s no problem,” Stella replied, recovering from her shock. “I’ll reach out to the tutor tonight. You can count on me.”

“Thanks, I appreciate it,” Marcus said. With that, Marcus stood up and went upstairs to his room.

Stella was dying to ask Marcus why he was going out of his way to help Edith, but she just couldn’t find the right words.

She clearly remembered how, back when Fiona had casually asked Marcus about a friend, he’d instantly gotten annoyed. Marcus had always hated anyone poking into his private affairs.

Her mind wandered back to that Lovett family’s party, when Marcus had shown up and even had Kane bring Edith over for a private chat. She wondered when Edith even got to know Marcus.

The Lovett family in Sunspire wasn’t even in the same league as the Larson family in Bonrea. For Marcus to be so invested in a girl from such a small family, it was more than a little odd.

Stella wondered if she should give Fiona a heads–up about this. She turned to Larry. “Larry, do you know how Edith and

Marcus first met?”

Larry hesitated, not knowing how to respond. He thought to himself, ‘Should I really bring up how Uncle Marcus had one of his episodes and kept calling Edith sister?

‘Or admit that I left him with Edith all night to take care of him. There was no way I could say that out loud.‘

He knew Marcus was doing this to thank Edith for taking care of him that night, so he suggested helping her find a tutor.

Larry cleared his throat. “Who knows what Uncle Marcus is thinking? I’m heading upstairs, gonna bury myself in a book.”

Stella kept it to herself until Bernard came home later that night, then she brought it up in a roundabout way. “Larry has always cared about the Lovetts‘ eldest daughter, and I get that’s because they practically grew up together.

“But now even Marcus is paying extra attention to Edith. Do you think we should give Dwight and Fiona a heads–up about this?”

Bernard replied calmly, “You know how Marcus is. He just goes with the flow. As long as he’s happy, that’s all we can really ask for.”

Marcus never had an easy road growing up. The only thing the family’s ever really wanted for him is to stay healthy and be happy.

No matter what Marcus wanted to do, Dwight and Fiona were always all in. As his brother, Bernard had learned not to get in the way of whatever he wanted. Stella just dropped the topic for now.

One quiet night slipped by without a sound. But Zachary’s scream tore through the peaceful morning. “Why?” He howled, and felt the urge to smash the mirror to pieces.

His face exploded with another ten pimples overnight, turning him into a walking nightmare.

Last night, he’d only left one homework question unfinished before nodding off at his desk. This morning, he woke up to face his ultimate punishment.

Now he was convinced that the whole punishment thing wasn’t just talk. It was legit. Those pimples really came out to get him.

‘No way am I ever swearing again. What if the heavens really do strike me with lightning next time?‘ he panicked.

Edith lounged against the doorway, totally unbothered as she watched Zachary lose it. She teased. “Alright, time to hand out today’s homework.”

“Edith, I hate you,” Zachary cried, practically steaming with rage. “I’m done with homework, even a single word. Just let me drop dead already.”

Edith shook her head, thinking, ‘This guy falls apart over nothing.’

She spoke calmly, “The essay Joseph wrote yesterday was pretty good. Your task for today is to write an essay, at least six

hundred words.”

Joseph poked his head in. “Come on, bro, writing essays is easy. I finished mine in under half an hour.”

The essay topic was My Favorite Food. It required three hundred words, and he wrote about chocolate.

He spent over a hundred words describing the taste of chocolate, then wrote about his feelings after eating it, and finally mentioned that chocolate should be eaten in moderation to avoid cavities. Edith gave him ninety points, the highest score

he had ever received.

Zachary frowned, “Are essays really that easy?” He was a total slacker when it came to exams and had never once bothered to actually write an essay in his life.

“The essay topic is My Favorite Sport. Since you like playing basketball, you can try describing how it feels to play basketball,” Edith reminded him. “Make sure to finish it by eleven o’clock tonight.”

Zachary wasn’t about to risk waiting until eleven. If he nodded off at his desk again, he might wake up with another whole batch of pimples.

Tomorrow was Monday, and there was no way he was walking into school looking like a total pizza face in front of everyone. He cracked open his notebook and, for once in his life, got seriously focused on writing his essay.

Edith went to assign Joseph his homework. He was just in elementary school, so the material was all pretty basic, pretty much the same stuff on repeat. For Joseph, it was a breeze.

While Edith was upstairs supervising her brothers with their homework, the Lovett residence got a surprise visit.
