Chapter 148 A Simple Meal, a Lifetime Bond

Becky walked over to Janus, hesitated for a second, then asked softly, “Do you want to stay and eat something? It’s simple, but ”
Janus’s eyes turned red again.
His daughter–his daughter–was inviting him to dinner.
He was overjoyed.
Their very first meal together as father and daughter. Of course he wouldn’t say no. He nodded and stood up.
But when he saw what was on the table, his heart clenched again.
Just stir–fried eggs with cucumber, a small dish of pickled vegetables, and mashed potatoes for each person.
That was it?
His voice trembled. “Is this… is this what you usually eat?”
Becky blinked, a little embarrassed. Now that she thought about it, this really was too simple to serve guests.
“Sorry, we ran out of groceries and haven’t had a chance to go shopping. This is all we had left, I hope you don’t mind.”
Janus wiped his tears.
His poor girl..
She wasn’t saying they hadn’t had time. She probably just couldn’t afford it.
He reached for more tissues.
“Why does he keep crying? Becky thought. “Is he made of water or something?”
She scratched her head, unsure how to comfort him.
“Please don’t cry… If there’s anything you want to eat, I can go buy it for you.”
She handed him a tissue.
Janus shook his head as he wiped his face. “I don’t want anything. You tell me what you want–I’ll buy it all for you.”
And that’s when Becky realized he wasn’t crying over the food itself.
He was crying for her.
He thought she was suffering, that she was too poor to eat properly.
But in truth, things weren’t that bad. She didn’t live in luxury, but she certainly wasn’t starving
Compared to people who had no home or no meals at all, she was doing just fine.
Trying to reassure him, she explained seriously, “I ate a lot this morning, and had a whole roast duck for lunch. I didn’t feel like anything heavy, and Abigail said we could make do with what was at home. I agreed because something lighter sounded
“Icart enough as a traditional medicine practitioner. Life’s not bad. Really. You don’t need to worry or feel guilty”
Janus looked at her
She hadn’t even grown up by las side, yet she was so mature and thoughtful, even comforting him.
Such a kind heart.
No wonder she got taken advantage of by that punk Xavier

If he’d been there, he would’ve skinned Xavier alive. Actually, he never would’ve let his daughter marry him in the first place
Taking a breath, Janus nodded along with her explanation. “Alright. A light dinner’s better for your health anyway.”
Becky sat down across from him.
Abigail, not wanting to intrude on their father–daughter moment, quietly took her food to the kitchen to eat.
Just as they finished eating, the DNA test results arrived.
Becky looked at the report. No surprises.
Janus, however, teared up again.
“Lily_\my daughter my daughter! I’ve finally found you…”
Becky wanted to hug him, but it felt a bit too intimate and awkward just yet.
She quickly changed the topic. “Was my name originally Winnie!”
Janus blinked, “How did you know?”
It was obvious, really. All her brothers‘ names started with W or 1 and Janus called her Lily, Must’ve been Winnie.
But Janus went on to explain without waiting for her answer. “Your mother and I named you Wu You–Winnie in English- because we wanted you to grow up carefree and happy. But things didn’t turn out that way. You suffered so much.”
Becky saw his eyes well up again and quickly interrupted, “Actually, I’ve had a pretty okay life. Not as bad as you think.”
If the original Becky suffered, it was because of love–chasing Xavier and getting her heart broken.
But she had suffered for real.
She grew up in an orphanage. Life was hard.
Still, after waking up in this world, she felt incredibly lucky. She got a new start. She had James. And now, she had a family.
She was content. Happy, even.
She wasn’t one to dwell on the past–what’s done e was done.
Whether the past was sweet or bitter, it was over. She just wanted to live well from now on.
Those past struggles had shaped her, and she accepted them as part of who she was
“Dad, don’t be sad. I’m really not. From now on, let’s just be happy.”
Janus hadn’t expected his daughter to be so open–hearted–and she called hum “Dad”
He’d waited so long to hear that word.
Ever since the day she was born, he had imagined this moment. Wondered when she’d speak, when she’d call him “Dad”
And now, she finally had.
His chest tightened with overwhelming emotion
“Alright From now on, we’ll be happy. With me around, no one will ever hurt you again”
Becky smiled Her soft peach blossom eyes curved upward.
Janus asked, his voice trembling. Can I hug you?”
She paused, then nodded gently
She leaned forward and hugged ham

Becky sighed. “Dad, are you made of water? Why are you always crying?”
“Dad, seriously–can this be the last time?”
Jams nodded through tears. “Okay. Last time”
Becky’s phone started buzzing nonstop.
