Becky highly suspected that Xavier’s concern about crushing James in his sleep was just a convenient excuse. The real goal? This.

In the darkness, Xavier’s voice came low and smooth: Babe, it’s still early.”

Becky:

Wanna do something else?

Becky tilted her head up. Do you have a death wish? Our son’s right here and your mind’s completely filthy.

Xavier:

I was just asking. If you’re not into it, fine.

You’re not even allowed to ask!

Okay.

James went to sleep early and naturally woke early too.

He sat up, blinking groggily to the left, then to the right.

Huh? Why was he in the crib?

He looked over at the big bedand saw Mom and Dad cuddled up together.

He let out a few whimpers, then burst into fullblown sobs.

His crying startled Becky awake. She fumbled around groggily.

Jarnes? What’s wrong, baby?

Mmph.”

That groan came from Xavier.

Becky’s hand had landed squarely on his chest, and when she reached out blindly earlier, she’d accidentally hit a very sensitive spot. With some force.

Hence the sound.

Unaware of what had just happened, Becky threw off the covers and made a beeline for the door.

Xavier called out, Where are you going?

James is crying. I’m going to check on him.

Right on cue, James let out another wail.

Mommy! I’m here! Right here!

Becky froze, turned, and saw James sitting tearfully in the crib on Xavier’s side of the bed.

Finally, she sees me!

She smacked her forehead. She’d forgotten that Abigail wasn’t around and James had slept in the master bedroom with them.

Xavier sat up and lifted James out of the crib, plopping him on the bed. The little guy instantly stopped crying and grinned from ear to ear.

Becky was speechless.

His tears came fastand disappeared faster.

James climbed onto Xavier’s chest and started playing with his shirt buttons.

Xavier folded his hands behind his head and let him play.

Becky glanced over, the corners of her mouth lifting into a faint smile.

After a while, she left the room and returned minutes later with a freshly prepared bottle.

James’s eyes lit up at the sight of it and he let out an excited squeal.

Becky handed it over. He grabbed it and started chugging eagerly.

Becky headed into the bathroom to wash up.

When she came out, Xavier’s phone was ringing.

She heard him answer: Yeah. I’ll be there soon.

She walked over and picked up James, who had just finished the entire bottle and let out a very satisfied burp.

She glanced at Xavier. If you’re busy, you should head out now.

Xavier looked at her. What about you?

I’ll go in a little later.

Xavier thought for a moment.

He had an important meeting that morning. Couldn’t miss it.

Alright. I’ll have Randall stay and drive you.

No need. I’ll just get a cab.”

Be good. Let Randall take you. I’ll drive myself.”

Becky considered it, then nodded.

She didn’t driveXavier did.

Xavier got ready, changed into a suit.

He was made to wear one. Impeccably tailored, effortlessly handsome.

He walked over and kissed her cheek. See you tonight.”

Becky shifted awkwardly. Mm.”

James looked up, wideeyed, glancing back and forth between his parents, his little head wobbling adorably.

Xavier chuckled and reached out to ruffle his hair before heading out.

Becky changed James’s diaper and carried him downstairs.

One of the maids approached. Ms. Becky, Mr. Xavier left without even eating breakfast.

Becky looked at the untouched table and said flatly, He’ll survive missing one meal.”

Abigail called to say she’d be back in about half an hour.

Becky handed James to the maid and went to eat.

After finishing breakfast, she changed clothes upstairs and came down just as Abigail walked in.

She briefed Abigail on the situation, grabbed her bag, and headed out.

Randall drove her to the clinic.

Later that afternoon, during her lunch break, Julia called.

Lily, are you tired?Julia asked, voice full of motherly concern.

Becky was chewing on a rib, perfectly cooked and seasoned to perfection.

Not tired. Did you eat, Mom?

Mmhmm. Your brother and his wife aren’t home, and Aaron and Hanson are at school, so it’s just me and your dad. We kept it simple.”

Did you get your special meals like the doctor said?

Of course. I have them a few times a week. Honestly, I’m feeling better and better. Your dad even said I look prettier now.

Julia said it with a shy little laugh.

Becky chuckled, tovering her mouth. Dad’s smooth.

Julia scoffed affectionately. That dull man? That’s probably the only compliment he knows how to say. Don’t expect much

more.

Becky laughed out loud.
