Chapter 210 Let Me Stay

Becky looked up and locked eyes with Xavier’s deep, obsidian gaze. Her heart skipped a beat, as if she’d been burned.

That look so fierce, so tender–it was overwhelming.

She held it for a moment before quickly lowering her gaze.

“Xavier, this is impossible. You don’t have to do this.”

“Why is it impossible?”

Becky was silent for a while before speaking softly. “I’m not the same person I used to be. I don’t know how to trust anymore. I don’t know how to live with someone else.”

“And your parents don’t like me. My family doesn’t like you. Relationships without blessings don’t last. I don’t want that kind of complicated mess. I just want a simple life.”

Xavier stared at the crown of her head, his eyes heavy with something almost like ache.

He reached out and gently pulled her into his arms.

“Don’t leave me. Let’s stay like this. If all you want is something physical, then we’ll keep it physical.”

He could wait–however long it took–for her to trust him again, to marry him. However long.

“My parents? Forget them. Just know this–no matter what, I’m on your side. You don’t need to deal with them for me. Be who you are.”

“As for your family, well… I’ll need some time to win them over.”

Just thinking of the Shanks clan gave him a headache.

None of them were easy.

Becky rested against his chest, her voice muffled. “You don’t have to do all this. There are plenty of amazing women in the world. Why cling to me?”

Xavier narrowed his eyes. “What’s that supposed to mean? You trying to ditch me so you can hook up with someone in Circovia?”

Becky shrugged. “Not impossible. If I have to wait for you to fly over just to sleep together, that’s like a three–hour delay.”

Xavier gritted his teeth. “Don’t even think about it! You hear me?”

Becky gave a tiny smirk but didn’t answer.

Xavier sighed, defeated, “I’ll come over often.”

“Ba ba ba…”

James crawled over and smacked both of their legs.

Becky turned and immediately pulled her son into her arms.

Xavier: “..”

He scowled at James.

This kid always shows up right when things are getting good.

James sat on Becky’s lap, laughing with squinty eyes full of joy.

Then, deciding it was more fun to climb, he started scrambling from Xavier’s lap to Becky’s, then back again. Over and over, like a little human seesaw.

Xavier watched, speechless.

No way he was this hyper as a kid.

But Becky absolutely loved James’s bubbly nature–so open, so full of life.

Before dinner, Abigail called to say she wouldn’t be home tonight, not until tomorrow.

Becky told her to handle her business and not worry.

After dinner, Becky brought James upstairs for his bath.

Xavier followed along, handing her everything she needed: body wash? He was already holding it out. Towel? He had it ready. Lotion? Before she could even reach for it, he passed it over.

Becky glanced at him, lips pressed together.

Xavier grinned. “So? Pretty good husband, right?”

“We’re not married. What husband?”

“Ex–husband, then. A very thoughtful ex–husband.”

Becky turned her head, hiding a smile.

With Abigail gone, Becky asked Xavier to help move the crib into the master bedroom.

But once James saw that both his parents were on the big bed while he was stuck in a tiny crib, he was not happy. He sat up and started banging the railings.

“Ahhh! Ahhh!”

Becky sighed and scooped him up, placing him between her and Xavier.

With a little bundle now separating them, Xavier could no longer hold Becky. He looked supremely irritated.

james, however, was thrilled to be on the big bed. His eyes curved into happy little crescents.

First time sleeping between Mom and Dad? Bliss.

Becky chuckled and kissed his cheek. “Sleep now, baby.”

Xavier leaned in. “I want one too.”

Becky blushed and gave him a quick peck.

Only then did Xavier look satisfied.

James babbled and clapped, giggling until his eyes nearly disappeared.

Becky turned off the lights, plunging the room into darkness.

She gently patted James’s back, humming a lullaby.

Xavier lay on his side, eyes open in the dark, watching her.

Her voice was soft, melodic–like water. Compared to Randall’s singing, it was heaven itself.

Just listening to her was a pleasure.

James drifted off quickly, his tiny breaths the only sound in the room.

Xavier reached out. “I’ll move him to the crib.”

Becky whispered, “Why?”

“It’s not safe. If we fall asleep and roll over, we could crush him.”

Becky agreed. James was still so small–even a stretch of the arm could be dangerous.
