Chapter 76 Who’s the Real Outsider

Xavier came home right on time.

Becky had made dinner.

They sat at the dining table in silence. Becky focused on her rice, saying nothing.

Xavier quietly served her more food.

She didn’t spare him a glance.

Then Xavier suddenly spoke. “You’re the one who saw everything. I’m the victim here. Why are you the one acting embarrassed?”

Becky choked on her food, spraying rice everywhere. The table was a mess.

Xavier set down his fork with a look of disgust and grabbed some napkins.

Becky assumed he’d stop eating–after all, she’d just contaminated all the dishes.

But to her surprise, Xavier wiped the table clean and resumed eating like nothing happened.

Becky stared. He wasn’t grossed out?

If it had been her, she’d have lost her appetite.

Not only did he eat, he ate a lot.

Becky finally asked, “When are you planning to go back?”

Xavier looked up at her.

“When Abigail returns.”

“I’m fine on my own,” Becky said. “You should go back.”

Xavier shook his head.

“I’m thinking about your safety,” Becky added. “Us living together really isn’t appropriate. To prevent more… incidents like last night, I think you’d better move out.”

“No big deal. He’s my son too–I can make a few sacrifices.”

Becky gave up. She was exhausted.

Knock knock knock.

Someone was at the door.

Frowning, Becky got up to answer it.

She froze when she saw who it was.

Lilian.

Lilian’s face was stiff as she walked in–just in time to see Xavier picking up the dishes and heading into the kitchen. He began washing up without hesitation.

Her brows creased.

Becky didn’t notice her expression and invited her to sit, pouring her a glass of water.

No matter how Lilian felt about her, the woman had still raised her in the Bolton family. Becky was willing to show some respect.

Xavier finished the dishes and started sweeping and mopping.

Becky didn’t own a robot vacuum–just an old–fashioned broom.

Lilian’s frown deepened.

When had her son ever done chores like this?

What kind of life was he living here?

Seeing that Xavier was just doing chores, Becky didn’t rush to entertain Lilian. She smiled, trying to ease the awkwardness.

“Xavier, you can do that later. Come chat with your mom.”

She shouldn’t have said anything.

Lilian’s eyes flared with fury.

This woman had gone too far.

She had Xavier doing housework, and not only did she not help, she had the nerve to schedule his chores for later?

Just from how practiced he looked, it was clear he’d been doing this regularly.

“I wasn’t winking at you,” she whispered. “I wanted you to take the mop back. Your mom.doing chores here doesn’t feel right.”

Xavier straightened the cushions on the couch, calm as ever. “It’s fine. She’s not an outsider.”

Becky tilted her head, thinking.

From Xavier’s point of view, Lilian wasn’t an outsider.

She was helping him, not her.

So Becky let it go.

In the kitchen, Lilian nearly snapped the mop in half.

Finally, she threw it down and stormed back to the couch, out of breath.

Becky glanced at the untouched glass of water.

“Mom, have some water.”

Lilian didn’t respond.

Instead, she turned to Xavier. “What are you doing living here? People will talk. You’re divorced.”

Becky had been trying to get Xavier to leave for days–she jumped at the opening.

“Exactly! People will gossip, Mom. You should make him go. He refuses to leave!”

Xavier gave Becky a sharp look.

She shrank under his glare, avoiding his eyes.

Lilian added, “Even Becky understands this. Why don’t you? Move back. You can’t stay here.”

Xavier walked out to the balcony and unfolded his cot, spreading the blanket like he was settling in for the

He completely ignored Lilian’s words–and Becky’s pleading glances.

Lilian was stunned. “You’re sleeping on that tiny bed? Is that even comfortable?”
