Becky explained, “My place is small. There’s only one bed–he has to sleep there.”

Lilian’s brow furrowed deeply. She couldn’t understand why her son insisted on suffering like this..

Xavier picked up his clothes and headed toward the bathroom.

Lilian stopped him. “Xavier, enough. You’re a grown man. Can’t you think about the consequences of your actions?”

Becky nodded in agreement.

Seriously, this man was so immature–and shameless. He insisted on crashing at her place.

Xavier turned his head and caught the look in Becky’s eyes. His gaze darkened further.

“I’m here to take care of my son,” he said to Lilian. “Besides, I’m single now. Who’s going to talk? Go home.”

“You two are divorced. That child has nothing to do with you. Becky said so herself.”

“How does he have nothing to do with me? If you and Dad got divorced and I was assigned to him, would that mean I’m no longer your son?”

“What nonsense! Your father and I are fine–why would we divorce?”

“I said if.”

Becky gave Xavier a silent thumbs–up.

This man really had guts.

Xavier disappeared into the bathroom.

Leaving Becky alone with Lilian.

The atmosphere was so tense, a pin drop would’ve been loud.

Becky sat on the folding bed, picking at her nails, not knowing what to say.

Lilian finally broke the silence. “Becky, I’ll be honest. Xavier’s exhausted from working all day. When he’s home, don’t make him do so much. You’re just lounging around at home–can’t you handle a few chores? Stop relying on him for everything.”

She couldn’t get her son to leave, but she sure wasn’t going to let him be bossed around.

Becky immediately snapped back, “What do you mean I’m just lounging around? Taking care of a baby is exhausting! I barely get any sleep at night. What’s wrong with Xavier helping out? He said he wanted to take care of James–shouldn’t that include doing something?”

“I’m not his maid. I won’t just wait around to serve him. If he wants to help, then pitch in.”

Lilian’s face turned as dark as spot.

“I say one thing, and you shoot back with ten! Becky, when did you become so unreasonable?”

“You didn’t say just one thing–you said plenty. And if what you’re saying is wrong, I am going to argue. I’m not stupid.”

Lilian clutched her chest, trying to steady her breath.

“I raised you, Becky. I’m your elder. Is this how you speak to me?”

“If my words are harsh, then yours aren’t much better.”

“You-!”

Lilian was on the verge of fainting.

She grabbed her purse and stood up. “I can’t talk to you!”

She slammed the door on her way out.

Becky rubbed her nose.

Xavier came out of the bathroom, drying his hair. He looked around and blinked.

“She said I sit around doing nothing, that you work hard and shouldn’t be doing chores. But I do work hard. So I clapped back. She got mad and stormed off.”

Then why were they still living together?

Jose nearly lost his mind.

He called Becky.

“Becky, I need to talk to you. Come down–I’m at your complex gate.”

Becky told him to wait.

Ten minutes later, she came out pushing a stroller.

Hard to blame her for the delay–anyone with a baby would understand.

She stopped in front of Jose. He looked pale, with deep dark circles under his eyes, and he reeked of. alcohol.

She only came down to tell him things face to face.

“Jose, this needs to stop. I’m telling you now–love is the most unreliable thing in the world. Don’t waste your energy on it. You should focus on things that actually matter. The world is big, full of beautiful places. Money’s great too. Put your effort into making some. You’ll be surprised how fulfilling life can be.”

Jose stared at her strangely.

“Becky… did Xavier hurt you? Is that why you’re talking like someone who’s given up?”

Becky frowned.

Given up?

She didn’t feel that way at all.

“No. I’ve never been more clear–headed or content. I’m happy because I kicked love out of my life. You‘ should learn from me.”
