“He’s in love with someone, and that someone’s already married.” Natalie turned her head, her expression serious as she looked at her. “I’ve even met the woman. I saw the ring on her hand myself.”
“No way! You’ve met her? What does she look like?” Lucy leaned closer, curiosity sparking in her eyes.
Natalie glanced toward the kitchen window, the woman’s face rising in her mind.
“Her name’s Adelyn. She’s Cindy’s best friend.” Natalie lowered her head and kept picking vegetables. “She’s pretty–definitely the bold, striking type.”
“So that’s the kind of woman he likes! What a shame…”
“A shame?” Natalie shot her a sideways look, half–joking and half–serious. “Don’t tell me you’ve got your eye on Marcus.”
“Of course not. I’m just scouting on your
behalf.”
The words landed, and Natalie’s hand froze mid–motion.
A faint blush climbed across her cheeks. “What kind of nonsense is that? He’s my ex–husband’s uncle.”
“That’s exactly why you should go for it!” Lucy explained brightly. “Think about it! He’s never been married; he’s a total catch. And on top of that, if you two ever ended up together, what would Jackson have to call you?”
Natalie stiffened at once.
you auntie,
“Auntie!” Lucy said suddenly, eyes lighting up. “Your ex–wife status flips straight to auntie. Just imagine how wild that would feel. Can’t you see it? That jerk actually having to call it would be priceless…”
“Cut it out.” Natalie could barely stand to hear her finish, pushing her out of the kitchen with a quick shove. “Go wait outside. If the kids wake up later, you can help watch them.”
“Why’s your face red then?” Lucy pointed at her cheek without thinking. “Be honest, something’s really going on with you two, isn’t it? The way you’re acting, it’s way too suspicious!”
Before Lucy could get another word out, Natalie slammed the front door shut.

The sudden silence didn’t case her mind; if anything, it made it worse.

Her thoughts tangled restlessly, filled with flashes of those ambiguous moments with him- images she couldn’t seem to shake no matter how hard she tried.
Natalie had thought the whole clinic incident was behind her; she never expected the at the center of it to come looking for her.
person
She hadn’t been to the clinic for two days. With the kids back in school that morning, she decided it was time to return as well and get back to work.
Plenty of patients showed up that morning; if Atlas had been alone again, he wouldn’t have been able to handle it. Luckily, she came in.
By the time their midday break rolled around, the waiting room had cleared.
Natalie took advantage of the lull, ran next door to grab two meals, and brought them back. She and Atlas sat together at the table, eating.
“Well, well, lunchtime?”
She had barely taken a few bites when a familiar voice floated in from the door.
Natalie’s head snapped up; the moment she saw the woman standing there, her face darkened.
Zoey walked in quickly, carrying a lunchbox in her hand.
Natalie pressed her fingertip against her phone, pausing the video that had been playing. Then she tapped her recording app, flipped the phone over, and set it facedown on the table.
Meanwhile, at the door, Marcus had headed to a project site that day. On his way, he’d asked James to drop off a treat at Natalie’s clinic.
It was Lily’s favorite; he hoped a little sugar might help lift her mood, boost her dopamine, and ease her spirits.
But the moment James reached the doorway, he froze. Something about the atmosphere inside felt wrong.
He instinctively stopped short, staying just out of sight as he watched.
