Natalic was starting to come to her senses.

And the moment she remembered that his heart already belonged to someone else, the thought of letting this go any further made her recoil.
She gripped his arm tightly. “Mr. Collins… could you take me to the hospital?”
She was a mess–utterly disheveled and exposed–while he still looked impeccable, his suit sharp and flawless. Aside from his slightly mussed hair, he looked no different from how he always did.
She, on the other hand, had been laid bare.
He adjusted her dress carefully, then filled the bathtub with cold water and lowered her into it.
“If you’re not feeling better in an hour, I’ll have the family doctor come by.”
After gathering his thoughts, he turned and left the bathroom.
Marcus stood alone on the vast balcony, chain–smoking one cigarette after another, his gaze fixed on the city lights below, his expression carved from stone.
They had come dangerously close to crossing a line.
His mind kept replaying those moments–her flushed face, her trembling breaths–and heat surged violently through his veins again, leaving him restless, strung tight, and on edge.
The hour crawled by, agonizingly slow.
When he finally stepped back into the room, Natalie was doing better, though her body trembled uncontrollably–she must have caught a chill.
He scooped her up without a word, dressed her carefully, then carried her to the bed and laid her down.
“Rest here tonight,” he said evenly. “Tomorrow morning, I’ll have someone take you home. I’ll make sure to find out what happened tonight.”
Wrapped tightly in the blanket, Natalie gave a small nod.
As he straightened to leave, she reached out instinctively, her fingers closing around his wrist.

Marcus looked back at her, his gaze unreadable. “What is it?”
“Thank you.”

He turned fully, bracing his hands on either side of the bed, leaning down until his shadow fell across her.
“I didn’t do anything worth thanking me for. Why are you thanking me?”
“If I hadn’t stopped you just now, were you really going to… with me?”
His answer came without hesitation. “Yes.”
“You already have someone you care about. How could you… how could you do that with someone else?”
“Special circumstances,” Marcus said, his voice low, deep. “And I’m not just anyone. If it had been someone else, I’d have thrown them out without a second thought.”
Natalie froze, caught off guard.
She had never imagined he’d say something like that.
“I’m telling you this because once you decide to move forward, you can’t keep looking back. If you’d answered that call just now, don’t fool yourself into thinking the divorce would still be possible.”
“Mr. Collins, you really overestimate my place in Jackson’s heart,” she said with a hollow laugh. “He’ll stay loyal to Victoria.”
“Then who are you staying loyal for?” Marcus asked bluntly. “Him?”
Her throat tightened; she couldn’t keep the nervous tension from her face.
It wasn’t loyalty to Jackson keeping her from crossing that line.
It was because Marcus already had someone else. She refused to jump from one fire pit straight into another.
She hadn’t been able to handle Jackson; what chance did she have with Marcus? There was a time she thought maybe she could lean on him, let him be her shield. But the more she got to know him, the more she realized–Marcus was dangerous.
