Natalie didn’t answer her. Instead, she pointed toward the door. “Leave. I’m about to start work, and I don’t need you hanging around, getting in the way.”
Victoria’s smile only widened. “If you won’t tell me, then I’ll just tell Jackson. Let him investigate for you.”
Without waiting for a reply, she spun on her heel, yanked the door open, and walked out.
Natalie turned back toward the mirror. Her whole body trembled with anger.
Both hands pressed against the edge of the sink; she gripped so hard that her fingertips went pale.
It seemed there was no hiding this anymore.
After all her caution, she’d still slipped up.
Natalie found a silk scarf and wrapped it tightly around her neck, covering the marks completely, before she finally began seeing patients.
The clinic was packed as usual; she stayed busy until well into the afternoon.
By evening, a familiar figure suddenly burst through the doors.
“This patient, may I ask—”

Atlas stopped cold when he saw who it was; his face darkened instantly, his voice cutting off mid–sentence.
Jackson’s gaze swept over the lobby of the clinic before fixing on Atlas. “Where’s Natalie?”
Atlas pointed toward the treatment room. “Inside, putting away instruments.”
Without another word, Jackson strode in that direction.
The sound of the door opening drew Natalie’s attention.
She turned her head–and was met with a face as cold as stone.
Just a minute ago, Marcus had called her to ask about Lily.
The call was still connected when Jackson stepped inside.

Bang.
The door slammed shut behind him, the lock snapping into place.
He crossed the room in long strides, snatched the phone from her hand, and slammed it facedown on the table.
His focus was entirely on Natalie; he had no idea Marcus was on the other end.
“What are you doing? Give it back!”
She reached out, trying to grab the phone and hang up the call herself.
But his hand pressed firmly over it, and his other hand clamped hard around her arm. “Who was the man you slept with last night?”
Natalie’s heart lurched into her throat.
So Victoria had told him.
“I didn’t sleep with anyone,” she said flatly, without the slightest hesitation.
“I was wondering why our door wouldn’t open all night; turns out you were wrapped up with some other man!”
–
Jackson dropped onto the edge of the desk, long legs spread, and in one swift pull dragged her forward–trapping her between them.
“Where exactly did you see me with another man?” Natalie looked up, her expression cold and unyielding.
Jackson yanked away her scarf. The faded marks on her neck came into view at once.
Natalie hadn’t expected it; she was completely unprepared.
“If nothing happened, then explain these hickeys.”
Her pulse hammered as she caught the ruthless edge in his eyes.
Victoria had clearly stirred the pot, leaving out the drugging and twisting the story so it looked like she’d been with someone else.
Natalie still didn’t know what the person behind the drugging had been aiming for.
But one thing was obvious, the point was to let Jackson find out.
