hapter 121 Sorry, Wife?

Even though she had long since stopped holding out hope for them, it still stung to be treated this way by her own son; she didn’t want to stay in this house for another second. She’d planned to leave for Oakridge Estates as soon as the rain let up.

Not in the mood?

The deep voice came from behind her.

Natalie turned, startled, and saw Marcus standing there, though she hadn’t noticed when he’d appeared.

She didn’t answer his question; instead, she asked, Mr. Collins, what brings you here today?

Mr. Gabriel heard Aiden wasn’t feeling well. He was worried, so he asked me to come check in.

Natalie nodded thoughtfully, then turned her gaze back toward the window, saying nothing

more.

He’s been giving you a hard time since he found out about that, hasn’t he?

Marcusvoice brushed against her ears again.

Her lashes trembled as she slowly turned her head to look at him.

After a brief silence, she said evenly, Something like this happenedof course he’d make things difficult for me; what man would be okay with his wife

She couldn’t bring herself to finish the thought.

We’re talking divorce here, what wife?Marcus tilted her chin with his hand, forcing her to look up at him. At best, you’re his exwife.”

Their gazes locked, and in his eyes, she caught a flash of barely contained anger.

Marcus studied her features, his gaze unconsciously dropping to her lips.

His Adam’s apple bobbed, and of course she noticed.

She quickly averted her face, lowering her voice. Mr. Collins, this is Clear Estate-

The next moment, he grabbed her hand and pulled her toward the nearby storage room.

He looked down at her, his gaze sharp. What about Clear Estate? You scared he’ll find out it was me that night? Hm?

Natalie’s heart leapt into her throat.

She hadn’t expected him to suddenly drag her in here.

Lowering her voice, she asked, Marcus, what are you doing?

What are you so nervous about? He already thinks you’ve got another man; that crimehas pretty much been confirmed in Jackson’s eyes. What’s the point in worrying if he sees this?

But we both know that’s not true, we-

She didn’t get to finish. Marcus tilted her chin up again, making her meet his gaze.

Not true? His eyes darkened, tinged with anger. Kissing me was fake? Letting me see you completely was fake? Not true? Were those marks fake too?

She was speechless.

For the first time, she realized just how dangerous this man really was.

If you’re so sure it’s fake, maybe I should let you feel it again; then we’ll see if it’s real or not.

Natalie stared at him, stunned. What are you trying to do?

The words had barely left her mouth before Marcus closed the distance between them.

His kiss was fierce, searing, crashing against her like a tidal wave; her eyes flew wide in shock.

His lashes trembled with the intensity of it, his entire presence radiating danger as he devoured every bit of her breath.

What startled her most was the fleeting hint of somethingan emotionon his face, almost too subtle to name.

Before he’d returned to the country, their paths had only crossed a handful of times, mostly because he’d saved her on a few occasions. He’d never seemed to think much of it, as though she were nothing more than a passing stranger.
