The slap she’d taken had been vicious; the mark burned red across her cheek.
She would need to put some ointment on it, without it, the swelling wouldn’t fade so quickly.
Since it was still raining, there weren’t many patients around. Taking advantage of the lull, she grabbed the medicine and headed into the treatment room.
She had barely pushed the door open when a low voice sounded behind her. “Where’s Natalie?”
Her hand, still holding the ointment, froze for a moment. Marcus? Why is he here all of a sudden?
Her fingers tightened around the door handle without thinking.
“She’s in the treatment room.”
“Does she have a patient?”
“No…”
The moment Atlas‘ answer faded, she heard those familiar footsteps draw near.
Quickly, she let go of the handle and moved toward the treatment bed, turning so the injured side of her face stayed out of view.
She hadn’t even set the ointment down before the door was pushed open from outside.
Natalie looked up at the entrance, her voice betraying the strain she tried to hide. “Mr. Collins, what brings you here so suddenly?”
From Marcus‘ angle, he could see her holding a cotton swab and ointment, her face angled away, tension written all over her expression.
But there was no patient in the room.
He crossed the space toward her in long strides. “What happened? Did you hurt yourself?”
Natalie swallowed hard before quickly shaking her head. “No.”
For some reason, she couldn’t bear to let him see the mark on her face.
Marcus set the box in his hand aside, noticing how stubbornly she kept her face turned away.

“What’s wrong with your face?”
He reached out, fingers catching her chin, trying to turn her toward him.
Her grip on the ointment tightened for a beat.
She refused to let him see.
But the more she resisted, the more his curiosity deepened.
“Turn your face.”
His voice carried the weight of command, yet she still resisted.
The next second, he caught her jaw in his palm and forced her head around.
The welt on her cheek blazed red against her skin, and it seared straight into his gaze.
His brows drew tight, his voice dropping to a low growl. “Who hit you?”

At being found out, Natalie’s hand went slack; she twisted the cap off the ointment and answered evenly, “No one.”
Lowering her head freed her from his grip.
His expression darkened further. He lifted her chin again. “Was it Jackson? He was here just now, wasn’t he?”
Natalie was forced to meet his eyes.
Those sharp, predatory eyes held a winter’s chill; his stare was sharp, dangerous, impossible to ignore.
Seeing he wouldn’t let it go, she finally admitted, “It was Victoria.”
Surprise flickered across his eyes but vanished just as quickly.
Natalie bent her head again, squeezing ointment onto the swab.
“She thinks you leaked her scandal, doesn’t she? That’s why she came after you?”
Her head shot up, eyes wide. “How do you know about that? Don’t tell me you were the one who went after her! Didn’t I make it clear, I don’t want you interfering?”
Marcus looked down at her, watching the spark of agitation in her face. He plucked the
