A cool sharpness flickered at the corners of her eyes.
“Other than you, I can’t think of anyone more fitting…”

“Then why don’t you tell me, what reason would I have to come after you?” Natalie paused, then went on, her tone cutting. “Unless you think I’m trying to get back at you for drugging me?”
For a split second, Victoria almost lost her footing in the argument.
Snapping back, she shot right back at her without hesitation. “When did I ever drug you? Stop making things up!”
Natalie’s expression hardened. She folded her arms across her chest, the weight of her presence dropping low and heavy.
Every time she saw this face, the memories came rushing back, unbidden and brutal.
Three years‘ worth of humiliation and pain came crashing down on her like a tidal wave, threatening to drown her all over again.
Forcing her thoughts into order, she said flatly, “Otherwise, why would you suspect me? Did it never cross your mind that maybe one of your other en set you up?”
“No one else would dare; only you!”
“Ms. Victoria, put on your act for other people if you want, but spare me the performance.” Natalie’s mouth curved into a sharp smile. “If anyone knows exactly what you’re capable of, it’s
me.”
The moment those words landed, Victoria’s face darkened completely.
Her fingers tightened around the sunglasses in her hand; her knuckles turned pale from the force.
“What do you
think you know?” Victoria’s chest heaved with fury. “Don’t fool yourself into thinking you know me so well!”
“Oh, I know perfectly well,” Natalie said, her lips tipping into a careless smile. “I know just how venomous you are; how good you are at playing innocent… especially in front of Jackson and
Aiden.”

Without hesitation, Victoria raised her hand and swung straight for her cheek.
“Stop!”
A deep voice rang out suddenly from the front desk.
Natalie had meant to block the slap, but she was a second too late.

The sharp crack of the slap echoed, burning hot across her cheek. The sting shot straight through her, lodging deep in her chest until it was hard to breathe.
When she looked back up, Atlas was already in front of her, arm outstretched to shield her, his face dark as he leveled a look at Rayne. “If you’ve got something to say, say it. What’s with the hitting?”
“I was talking just fine,” Victoria said coldly, holding up her hand as though examining it. “But your boss can’t seem to keep her mouth shut. My hand got away from me; it really wasn’t intentional. My apologies.”
The next second, Natalie shoved Atlas aside and strode forward.
She didn’t hesitate. She raised her hand and slapped Victoria right back. “That’s for slandering me, consider it returned.”
Smack-
Another crisp slap rang out.
This time on the other side of Victoria’s face.
Natalie looked her square in the eye. “And that’s for good measure.”
Shock flashed across Victoria’s face. “Natalie, are you out of your mind? I hit you once, and you hit me twice?”
“Your assistant and the people around you might put up with your nasty temper; I won’t.” Natalie pointed straight at the door. “Get out. If you keep wrecking my business here, don’t blame me for throwing you out by other means.”
Atlas stood frozen, stunned by the scene,
He had thought Natalie would just stand there and take it; instead, not only had she fought back, she’d hit harder.
