Chapter 145 Not Dating Just Complicated
Natalie quickly shook her head. “Of course not.”
“Natalic, don’t scare me like that; my heart is fragile,” Lucy said, still staring at her in shock. “Even if nothing happened, the situation between you two is still… pretty ambiguous. How is that any different from dating? When I saw him coming down from the second floor just now, I nearly dropped dead from shock.”
Natalie turned her head and went back to restoring the jade piece, her expression turned dark, unreadable.
Lucy, however, suddenly grabbed her hand, her tone deadly serious. “Does Jackson know about this?”
“If he did, wouldn’t the whole house have come crashing down by now?” Natalie let out a cold, humorless laugh. “Right now, you’re the only one who knows. I’d appreciate it if you could keep this between us…”
“Don’t worry; I won’t breathe a word. Especially not in front of that dude.”
Natalie gave a small nod, then slipped her hand free of Lucy’s grasp.
“I told you he had feelings for you. Even if it’s not love, you’ve at least caught his attention; the way he looks at you… it’s never the same as how he looks at anyone else.”
Natalie’s hands stilled for the briefest moment.
She lifted her gaze to Lucy, curiosity flickering in her eyes. “Really? How is it different?”
“I don’t even know how to explain it; it just is.” Lucy’s lips curled into a teasing grin. “Think about it, after all these years, have you ever heard a single rumor about Marcus? Not one. Maybe he’s never even been in a relationship.”
“You think that’s possible?”
Natalie’s mouth curved in a faint smile, edged with something cold. Marcus, what kind of man was he? He was at the top of his world, powerful enough to move markets with a word, with the looks, presence, background, and career to match. A man like that… how could there not have been women around him all these years?
“You’ve never heard the phrase?” Lucy said, her tone matter–of–fact. “Better to have none than to settle. You’ve been with the Collins family for years; have you ever seen him bring a woman home?”
Natalie’s grip on her tool faltered, her hand pausing mid–motion.
She’d been married into the Collins family for nine years. She’d spent the first three of those years in prison; in the six years that followed, she could count on one hand the number of times she’d seen him.
Those six years had been the height of Marcus‘ empire rising; for four straight years, he hadn’t even come home. They hadn’t crossed paths at family events, not even once. Even during formal banquets, his absence was a constant.
When she couldn’t even see him, how could she have seen him bring someone home?
“All I’m saying is, he’s an incredible man; handsome, rich, and–most importantly–loyal.”
Lucy’s words yanked Natalie out of her thoughts.
